Driveclub PS Plus Edition Delayed by Server Issues

So considering "if you can't get online you'll be able to get started offline like everybody else with single player mode as you start your DriveClub tour." - why can't PS+ users do the same? Hoping for some added sales from impatient people before the 'free' version goes up, perhaps?

Some of that, and maybe they feel the game is just not presented right without a connected experience (and may end up losing them sales). As basically the "Club" part of the game is not active if they can't connect to the servers, and that's supposed to be an important part of the game.

You're absolutely right.

That said, I'm upset because for more than a year—a year!—DriveClub has been advertised as a bold new model for PS Plus. And it was never said that the game would be available after the full version. In fact, it was advertised as being available on October 7.

Now the full version is released. But the PS Plus Edition was never available for download—not even for an instant. That tells me Sony planned all along to hold it back if servers struggled to handle the load.

So, after more than a year of promises, Sony delayed its grand experiment due to its own technical incompetence—with zero communication of why. Yet the full version is still available for purchase and download. PS Plus users are left as second class customers.

So much for a bold business model.

Oh, I can understand being upset that it isn't out yet, between the development delays and the server debacle. People waiting for the PS+ version have every right to be disappointed and annoyed, but they can't claim that they're owed the game right on release day.

But seriously, the game is missing a lot of the touted functionality without the servers being up. I still enjoyed my time playing the game yesterday, but I think they made the better choice by keeping the plus version offline until they can sort things out. Had they released the PS+ version in a broken state, it'd just have traded one shit storm for another. Or rather, made two separate storms into one giant one. If they can ensure a smooth launch of the PS+ version, everybody playing it will be better off for it.

Now if the servers end up going down again for extended periods of time when they release the plus version to the masses... Well then I'll retract my statement and instead go with them being idiots.

They're doing this to encourage sales of the full game. No way they are this incompetent that even with a year's delay they could not get their servers ready.

How is "our severs can't hanfle this" a sales tactic for the game?

The fact Sony keeps removing the paid version from the store indicated they certainly aren't doing this on purpose.

Then throw up some evidence to prove that point. Because without it, its hard to fathom offering a free game service for 3 years (and...it continues to function that way on the Sony's console with the larger installed base...the PS3) thinking that, eventually, with next gen, they'd have consumers "hooked" so could throw up a paywall. 1 year prior to next gen launch? Maybe...but not 3. That's hard to buy into....and doesn't have much in the way of evidence to back up.

The opposing evidence is, well...the program's existence for 3+ years, and continued existence in the same form for PS3 members.

Their financials actually show they're not so great at long term planning...that's the point. It DOES have something to do with things..as it shows their corporate thinking.
I'm not an insider, so I can't provide data. I'm just adding to the hypotheses that others have put out there. I don't see why that's "hard to buy into." 3 years ago would have been the same time that work on the PS4 was going on. They could have easily been developed in conjunction with one another.

Where exactly pray tell, do the financials from Sony Computer Entertainment show that they're bad at long-term planning?

What's interesting is that they didn't release the free version at the same time they put the paid version up. How would they know there would be server issues before putting up the free version?

It's definitely not a sales tactic. But they didn't remove a thing, what you see is the full version removed because you have PS+. The discounted full version because you have a PS+ membership is still there.

You make great points!

My only distinction is this; players can still buy the full version of DriveClub online despite its broken features. Sony is essentially saying that those 60 dollars for the full version are more valuable than the six or so dollars for PS Plus version. I admit that makes business sense.

But it also sends the message that they are protecting some paying customers at the expense of other paying customers.

I caved in and bought the upgrade, couldn't stand waiting. Worth it so far with my only complaint being that the servers are down and the 'real' weather (rain etc) is missing from what I can see.

I cant understand also why they cant release the Plus version and just shut down the servers till its fixed, so at least the Plus subscribers can play offline like everyone else.

Actually, what I really cannot understand is, why after PS Plus started to place MP behind a paywall and delayed this game for an enitre year they were not prepared for the ONLY new exclusive title for the console in months!! Thats beyond ridiculous.

It should though, took more playtime to get the last trophy in that than it did in ISS (and I don't mind the length to get ISS's trophies at all...shouldn't always be a 40 hour MP grindfest to get trophies FFS)

I agree. I think there's a minimum of 20 trophies for a game to qualify for a Platinum now.

I haven't seen the DC trophy list to see how "attainable" the Platinum really is with the PS+ version. I'm sure there'll be a catch somewhere...

They had more than a year to plan for these server issues. Cmon.

I agree it's not really acceptable although I'm willing to be patient because I have no alternative (I'm not paying £35 just yet) and I'm not really paying any extra for PS+ DriveClub, I have a PS sub with or without it.

Oh no, a "free" premium game is causing a lot of server demand. Bollocks did they not anticipate this.

The PS+ instant collection games didn't get released until after noon (CST) yesterday. The full games made available after midnight, so they decided to delay the PS+ version after they had already released the full version.

People want something they can get for free. People have been waiting for it. People are told they cant have it free yet, but if they pay they can. Some of those people now pay for it. This isn't rocket science.

Not everyone who reads "our servers can't handle this" perceive it to an instant black mark against the developers. Many people will perceive it as, "Oh Wow, that game is so awesome everyone is playing it so much that the servers can't keep up."

I wonder if background coding work for psn 2.0 inserted a mystery gremlin into the code...this is probably all over something stupid, like a decimal point...this is OfficeSpace

I wonder if we'll get it sometime this week, or even today. I guess I could go rent this, but it would hard to justify in terms time available to play seeing as how I just rented mordor.

I kind of assume it's mostly multiplayer "do X Y times" challenges. Which I hate, but...it's just the sort of game it is, I wouldn't have expected any different with or without a PS+ version.

I still have no idea exactly what Sony's trophy policy is. I know there's an extra cert step for platinum (IIRC, the Octodad guys mentioned this), but several $15-$20 indie games have (rightfully IMO) gotten platinum trophies (Lone Survivor, Velocity Ultra and 2X), but some fairly lengthy games in the same class dont', and even GZ with a retail release doesn't have one. And then there's Contrast with 10 bronze only trophies, I figured every game had to have at least 1 gold but I guess not.

What I'm having trouble understanding is how Driveclub is busting up Sony's servers so badly.

Like, I'm sure it's selling fine but it's not like Driveclub is a multi-million on day-one selling game. I'm sure tons of other games having gotten more simultaneous day-one downloads from the PSN store (even if just due to a lot of people waiting for the PS+ version of Driveclub instead) and there's certainly going to be mannnnny games in the future that will do better. Same thing in terms of players just connecting to servers after downloading/buying the game and stuff.

I don't really get it. If Driveclub is destroying servers to the point that they can't even release the PS+ version then I'm very worried about pretty much every upcoming tuesday from this week to the end of November.

I don't get how DC screwed things up when Destiny didn't (best I can tell). Must have sold better and seems like if anything it'd be more intensive.

Evolution would have been smart to do a public beta for the game. If for nothing else, the Destiny beta gave Bungie a hell of a lot of data on how to manage server loads for such a massive player base, and that data is useful for any developer.

What other demo has a platinum trophy?

Does that matter? I'd be asking why I could get the Platinum of a game with less than 20% of the content ...

Either way, it's a small portion of the game ... actually, with people calling "few" the equivalent of 80% or more of something, I better rephrase that ... Either way, it's less than 1/5th of the main game, that is a demo.

Crazy they didn't account for the load on their servers. I work for a big tech company and part of my job is prepping for product launches with huge scale. Many late night load testing runs against astronomically high loads. As a result this never happens.

EVO if you want to hire me holla. I'd love to move to the UK :)

Good thing they're taking care of the fully paid users and not just throwing everyone into a leaky ship and hoping for the best.

Tech issues are the worst. At least we all have a dozen or more games to be playing other than driveclub.

Wouldn't a hotfix making it so the game doesn't constantly try to reconnect as much relieve a lot of the server stress? Make it so it tries every 20 minutes to reconnect instead of every 3 minutes or whatever it's at now.

I'd like to know how many times the game tries to connect. Is there a way someone could monitor their network or something to see how many requests are sent per 5 minutes or something? I'm not an IT guy so I'm not sure if that is possible.
