DS...Best System Since SNES?

Get off your high horse. Your opinion is not worth more than someone else's, no matter how many people agree with you.

What high horse? This thread is why people laugh at the hardcore rose-colored glasses Nintendo nut. What else should I say?

It lessens the achievements of quality consoles and handhelds. The same way the nuts who champion crap like Kirby Air Ride and Mario Baseball lessen true greats like Wind Waker and Fire Emblem. As scary as it seems to the true fanatics, all Nintendo games are not full of fun and polish anymore, and the DS is far from the best system since the SNES. Its not even debatable. Its like calling the color red, green.

SNES was the pinnacle of gaming. The 'golden era'. So DS has a lot to do before it even comes close to SNES calibur.

Dreamcast is the best system since the SNES/Genesis. DS is looking good though. I can't wait to get one with Mario Kart. And then Mario & Luigi2, Castlevania etc.

I enjoyed Mario Baseball more than Wind Wanker. Just sayin'.

The DS is a lot of fun, though. Which also doesn't deny the fact that Nintendo crazies are the craziest.

DS has yet to celebrate its first anniversary. 90% of Mario Kart owners will compete online minutes after they get the game. This will be also true for all online Nintendo games. 3 new platformers from Nintendo are in the works, including a new Mario Bros in 2D, playable in coop and competition. Final Fantasy Chronicles online is coming to the DS, as well as Final Fantasy 3. Zelda DS and Pokemon Online will certainly see the day in 2006, as well as FZero Online and some crazy new franchises. MetroĂŻd Hunter Online will set the mark for FPS on a portable console. Connectivity with the Revolution will certainly be a blast. Someone could continue this list of excellent reasons why the DS may at the end of its lifetime be considered as one of the very best consoles ever created.

In few years it may start to give it a run for money but I cant imagine anything beating snes. I'm still playing new experiences on my snes and is almost 15 years old!

I clicked on the DS conference thread trying to find a sample of the recreational drugs Nbots must've smoked today but I got there too late. Must've been some pretty good shit to cause all these delusions.

unless you're a nintendo fan

Theres not one game that excites me on DS
You disappoint me.

Sure, as the fanboy that I am, I want Microsoft Xbox/X360 and Sony PS2/PS3 to die horrible, agonizing deaths, but there's a few games that I'd like to play on those systems and those games actually do excite me.

To answer the topic question seriously, GBA is the best system since the SNES for one reason. It essentially is the SNES in portable form, with all the SNES ports and its specialisation as a 2D system. Not to mention a handful of original GBA games which are SNES-era grade.

DS is still too young, needs a case redesign, has average 3D capabilities and the online service still needs to rollout. Give it more time I reckon. Can't do much about the crap 3D, except hope developers simply steer clear of it and focus on 2D, but at least the case redesign is inevitable and we already know the online service is coming.

btw, drohne and drinky should make babies together. TheyÂ’d be a new breed of super babies. TheyÂ’d be so cyooote and blessed with literacy skills far beyond any normal person!

The DS has "average" 3D capabilities? It is to 3D what the Sega Master System is to 2D -- it's rudimentary and barely functional in this day and age. The PSP is "average" for 3D.

Regarding the main post, there is no goddamn way a handheld system is as good as a great console. I would rank nearly every console in the history of the world ahead of some portable.

yup online gaming is hot cause is now in the ds? :D :D

I think it would be hard to qualify a single system as the BEST system since the SNES. If I had to pick one, it would probably be the PS2. Not because I think the PS2 is the cat's meow, but just in sheer number of great games it is probably the best system since the SNES (and maybe even since the NES). That being said, the PS2 also has the highest signal to noise ratio with many many many many truly shitty games on it (obviously the majority).

Good to shitty game ratio-wise, I think the DS is certainly one of the best systems ever released. It has a lot of great games for it and relatively little filler (relative to the amount of great games). It's lineup through the end of the year is outstanding and it "may" actually take the online handheld crown during that same time. Nintendo IMHO has learned their lessons on the relative failure that was the gamecube. Don't stick stuff out there and let the developer decide to use it or not. Don't release only a handful of games every quarter and hope the 3rd parties follow through. Most importantly target the buying public. marketing marketing marketing marketing.

So no to the question, I guess it would be difficult to call the DS the greatest system since the SNES. However as just an appreciation on how far the DS has come, especially in the face of vastly superior hardware (PSP) the DS has shown that with the right direction and market value clock speed and fillrates aren't everything.

Hell, in video games it is almost always the inferior hardware that has won (2600, NES, PS1, PS2, Gameboy, DS).

I'm with you on the Kirby Air Ride at least.

You should really stop saying Mario Baseball sucks though.

After all this news today I am fairly confident it is. Hell, it might even surpass SNES. Anyone else feel the system looks just THAT good with the lineup coming out?
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol

The SNES didnt become a classic with old ports, it became a classic with new original content. Now the DS is better because it has ports of the same 15 years old games but with new extras?

Could you name me those ports?

I don't get how people can downplay the PS2. It hosts nearly every major new release from just about every third party on the planet, get lots of ports and updates of older games AND plays the entire library of god knows how many PS1 games.

It's like a couch. It's comfy, everyone has one, you use it all the time, and you don't think twice about it.

A DS on the other hand is like having a pocket full of hot magic, a portal into a new, better world. A world where you can play Tingle RPG. And cry tears of scalding piss.

Nes - Snes - GBA - NDS

Best systems ever seen.

As much as I love my GBA it doesn't belong on that list. Place the Genesis up there instead. Also the DS isn't even in the same league as the SNES and I doubt it ever will be. Handhelds today get all the leftovers and besides Nintendo and Konami there are not that many companys that are willing to spend the kind of money necessary to create a AAA title on handhelds.

I would imagine that the Neo Geo probably belongs on a list of best systems ever, but I was a kid and a billion dollar game system was a little out of my price range back then (hell even the Genny and SNES were too expensive back then, had to rent and beat most of the games I played in a weekend). So any kids lucky enough to own a Neo Geo back when it was new can all bite me.

I am obviously biased, but 3D just hasn't reached the level of 2D games yet. There are some exceptions, but for the most part the games just aren't as fun. That doesn't look to change next generation either so it looks like I will have to get my 2D fix on handhelds.

That's worth a damn? Not really, far as I can tell.

I absolutely love my DS. Love it. Best $150 I ever spent... if even for Advance Wars alone. Add playing my GBA games (love the screen, fits much better in my hands than the SP, *real headphones!*) and all the love coming out for it in the next year, and I'm one happy console owner.

Whether or not it's the best system is a whole nother topic. But my PC will whup all y'alls nancy console asses any day :D

I am definitely a Nintendo fan over the other publishers, but I don't think that's blinded me to the fact that they've made some shitty games and business decisions. I would imagine if you care enough to post in these forums, and aren't the type who write shit like, "OMG NINTENDO/SONY/MS RULZ!", then no matter who you are a "fan" of, you probably look at things with enough nuance to not be biased.

That said, I for one don't know that the SNES was the high watermark. I would argue that the "best" since then was PS1, though the N64 was probably my favorite console of all time.

And yeah, Mario Baseball is a GOOD game. It's not great, and God knows the base runners' AI is horrible, but it's fun as hell. I've logged plenty of play time with it, I'm not ashamed to say.

Well. I won't jump on your opinion. But..in MY opinion, the 'best' system since the SNES is the GameBoy Advance. At least when it comes to offering a similar gaming experience.

Obvious, this all depends on what kind of games you like to play. If what you like are Epic, cinematic RPGs, Sports, Racing, Shooters, 3rd person Action or free-roaming mission-based games, then the answer is obviously no.

The SNES isn't *my* pinnacle of gaming(That'd be the Genesis followed by the Saturn).

But if the DS is your favorite system since the SNES, that's OK with me. Glad you like it. But I doubt many will agree to that sentiment.

Saturn and Genesis were home to kick ass 2D games and thus your opinion is correct. ;)

What impact.

The brutal ass-whooping Sega and Nintendo got and the way NEC and Matsushita/Panasonic exited the market.

I guess Playstation (2) is responsible for making Microsoft enter the market.

I know you. You're the guy who posted NOTHING but first-party Nintendo games in the "top ten games of all time" list. Taking you seriously is bad for one's health.
