DS...Best System Since SNES?

Sholmes said:
Did I say that? Man, I gotta stop making these stealth posts by accident. While you're at it, maybe you could point out how the DS FO' SHO' beats the PS2? As that seems like a hasty generalization pulled out of your cavernous asshole.

jesus christ! there you go again! god forbid i have my own opinion. get a life!

I think nostalgia happens when you are doing something (in this case playing games) at a time when you were carefree and happy (in alot of cases when you were a kid). So when ou peg someone for being nostalgic blinded for saying the SNES was the best system ever, the nostalgia accusation s probably true if they were a child at the time of the SNES. Also, if you are still having fun with an old game. It's probably nostalgia helping that enjoyment. I can still play say Castlevania 4 and love it. But if I never played it before and just recently tried it, I would probably find it too basic to be enjoyable. I can distinguish when I'm genuinely liking a game or just liking it because it was something I enjoyed when I was a kid.

It isn't nostalgia. Those olders games are better (imo). There are plenty of older games that I find to be utter shit today. I really do think that 2D games are still more fun at this point than 3D games. When I played Fire Emblem or the GBA Castlevania's that sure as hell isn't nostalgia and in general I enjoy those games more than most 3D games released today. Not to say that the current systems suck, but for me personally other than Winning Eleven and MGS3 nothing really blew me away on PS2. It could be because I am jaded now, but I doubt it.

And this isn't to say Nintendo is the best. I barely played my Gamecube either and there isn't a game on the cube that is in the same league as WE. There were just not many games this generation that captured my attention.

Well, we need a list, I think.

Let's run down all the great games and announcements for the DS.

This is what I've got on my plate:

Sonic Rush
New Super Mario Bros.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Final Fantasy III
Advance Wars Dual Strike
Mario Kart DS
Super Princess Peach
Rainbow Islands
Bubble Bobble
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time

Anything I'm missing?

If the DS gets an online Super Puzzle Fighter II with touch screen support then the answer is a resounding YES!

It is nostalgia and you are jaded. You've outgrown games, give up gaming.

Damn, this is ugly. Might be time to lock this here thread.

Just add people that annoy you to your ignore list, dudes. I like the occasional snark, but flamewars make an ass out of u and me.

Yeah I think the DS is the first freash idea this gen. Kind of sad really. All I know is that right now I'm enjoying my DS more than any of my other systems and I'm looking forward to the DS lineup more than any other.
It's too fucking easy.

After all this news today I am fairly confident it is. Hell, it might even surpass SNES. Anyone else feel the system looks just THAT good with the lineup coming out?

Yeah, that's the response I'm talking about. This is a good example to differentiate between why I am not being nostalgic in some of the cases while bionic is. gogogo!

Because he dismisses most 3D games, saying that 2D games are better. In his case, he has lost interest in gaming but doesn't realize it. All he has left is his nostalgia of his favorite old games.

No. Would you rather play Contra or Halo?

Uh, I'd rather play Contra. :P Not that I don't like Halo 1! Halo was probably the wrong game to pick there, as there are plenty of people that just HATE it.

I'd rather play Contra, no contest. :lol

But then, Contra is one of my favorite games of all time, and I LOVE 2D run&gun games.

Nostalgia, you say? Jaded you think?

So be it!

Didn't you post that you bought none of the current gen consoles consoles?

No. I have a PS2 and a Gamecube and over 120 games between them.

I posted that I didn't buy an Xbox, though. I do have 3 games for it.

Oh my bad, actually I had just reread in that one thread. I remembered your avatar and that comment but it was you replying to the guy.

I don't dismiss most 3D games, I have played a decent amount of 3D games on my Gamecube and PS2 (more on the PS2 for obvious reasons) and even more on the DC, PSX, and N64. I really like a few games on the PS2 and Gamecube, such as Zelda, Ico, ZOE2, MGS3, Kingdom Hearts, Disagea, etc. And Winning Eleven on the PS2 is one of the best games I have ever played, but overall I just don't find even my favorite 3D games to be as fun as the best 2D games I have played. If you want to dismiss my opinions and say my judgment is clouded by nostalgia, well you are welcome to, but you would be wrong my friend.

In some ways the older games are still better, but I the first to admit when something is better (i.e. Winning Eleven is the best sports games of all time and it is 3D).

Because nostalgia tends to warp peoples minds into thinking something was better than it actually was.

Exactly. I've been burned by the nostalgia experience. I'm sure some Nintendrones can force themselves to think SMB was as fun for them at age 10 as it is for them at 25 though. Remember, anything Nintendo does, Nintendrones love, even if its something so stupid you have to wonder how many lines Nintendo execs sniffed to concoct such stupidity.

jesus christ! there you go again! god forbid i have my own opinion. get a life!

Sholmes is right. PS2 has a lot of variety and a lot of arguable classics like ZOE2, Ico, etc. (there's a hell of a lot more than those two). If you make such a bold claim as to talk shit about PS2, you better have your shit straight.

DS is the PS1 of the portable world. I really find it strange no one has seen the symmetry of it all. It was this time ten years ago that Square was quietly preparing to jump the Nintendo ship to support the PS1 and 10 years later, the situation is happening in reverse.

I recall a comment last month about Square's small booth and lack of new stuff to show at TGS. I jokingly commented they were hiding their wares for anothe conference. I didn't imagine it would be a Nintendo conference and they'd support the DS so strongly to the exclusion of the PSP.

I'm not saying SquareEnix is abandoning Sony, but you have to be blind to not see SE's unhappiness with Sony recently, especially over the FFXI HDD issues and PS2 redesign issues. Giving PSP the cold shoulder was SE's revenge. And don't give me crap about FF7 AC, which SquareEnix coveniently made sure to only print a limited supply off and a couple of vapour ware FF7 spinoffs. DS is where Square is at. How things have changed. six months ago, no one would have believe even God had he posted this on GAF.

That doesn't even make sense.

It doesn't. This is just another hope from an Nintendo fanboy where if they dream hard enough, Square will abandon PS2/PS3 and run to Revolution/DS through bizarre-as-fuck explanations.

I guess what is happening is bizzare, but not in the way you intended it to mean.
