But, it doesn't look fun. Seriously, I could've sworn it was a Pocket PC or PALM product with it sleek brushed silver box, with no hint of gaming. Not that the GBA-SP box looks that great either.

I know the current PS2 or Xbox boxes aren't fun either. Why not just put the whole lot in a big brown cardboard box?

Though this was posted in the gargantuan DS announcement thread:

While the Logo and its placement are nice, the rest of it reeks of a bad photoshop. I'm sure the "final final" box will look better.

Yes, and hopefully a final box will specify (in visuals) that it's a Nintendo system for gaming and not just a device with a stylus.

Customer: "Do you guys have the Nintendoods?"
Employee: "You mean the Nintendo DS?"
Customer: "No I mean the Nintendoods, see it says it right on the box."

Wouldn't the "Nintendo" part give that away? I could see your point if we were talking about Sony or MS and it was in some other section besides games. :P

not that i care about the boxes of hardware, but the large image of the DS makes it look kind of...stupid?

would have been better if it were all black and said Nintendo DS(along with the cool logo) :)

Yeah, I suppose they could figure it out...But the box does very little to impress someone or make its mark. Whatever.

No matter what Nintendo does, there'll always be haters!

:lol

Didn't notice that until now.

Something about this system just bugs the hell out of me. It's very un-Nintendo like, and I hate that. It's big, ugly and the stylus thing doesn't look very fun. This is coming from a die hard Nintendo fan.

That is one ugly handheld. But handhelds suck so who cares.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. I've always disliked handhelds (read: Gameboy), and this one looks ugly, confusing and akward.

Nintendo fans will buy it by the million, I'm sure. Must be something in the water.

Enough with the hatred and jackassery. This thread is written for Nintendoods, by Nintendoods.

(and that box looks classy!)

The stylus really turns what could have been a fine, if sterile picture of a games machine into a huge honkin' PDA. I suppose there's no real way of making that capability cool-looking in a picture, though.

When you buy a new stereo or DVD player, do you need cartoon characters cavorting on the box in bright primary colors to show you that you're going to have fun with the product? To me, slapping something bright, cartoony, and 'fun' (like Mario) on the package would just scream 'toy'. This boxart, on the other hand, presents the system as something powerful and attractive, and leaves the 'fun' to the packaging for the games, much like a DVD player box as compared to DVD's. And if it seems 'un-Nintendo-like', well, what can you do? A company can't attempt to change their image and keep the way they they package and market their products unchanged--you have to pick one or the other.

IMO, Nintendo's really on track with this.

Yep, Nintendo is on the right track. They have to lose that kiddie image completely, and this is about the most mature looking product that they have ever made. These things should look like consumer electronics...something more sophisticated than a mere toy for children.

The Revolution should not look like a toy either.

Actually, it's more like:

Customer: "Do you guys have the Nintendo DS?"
EB or Gamestop Employee: "You mean the Nintendoods?"
Customer: "What? I mean the Nintendo DS, the new Nintendo handheld..."
EB or Gamestop Employee: "Which is the Nintendoods."
Customer: "No I mean the Nintendo DS, see it says it right on the box. Just check."[/QUOTE]
EB or Gamestop Employee: "Looks like the Nintendoods to me."
Customer: "Well can I just get it please?"
EB or Gamestop Employee: "Don't bother, it sucks. I heard..."
Customer: "What? One minute ago you didn't know a damn thing about it, and now you're bashing it? Are you guys like this with everything? WTF?!?! Listen, I don't have time for this, do you want my money or what? "
EB or Gamestop Employee: "... Have you pre-ordered Halo yet?"
Customer: "Bye. Fuck you. I'm going to Best Buy."

Well sp0rsk, from what I've read from you thus far on the boards, I know that you are one of the few who actually knows their shit and I'm assuming you never mislead or belittle your customers.

But you have to admit, even from the stories that are just at the GAF alone, most game store employees have a horrible reputation that's well deserved.

Please don't.

-seriously, old gameboy logo aside, how the hell does this look much different or "more mature" than the sp box? i think they both look rather similar. i just don't get it.

I think the two do look very similar. This style -- silver hardware, minimalistic font and design -- will probably be carried on to Nintendo's next console, as well.
