The thread title could've used a comma after "Retail workers".

ManaByte said:What do you mean by "scaled down"?
wobedraggled said:Many umd's are just the movie, no extras.
ManaByte said:The ones I own have extras. In fact many are identical to the DVD.

In that case, are Sony trying to emulate the success PlayStation 2 went through?citrus lump said:But seriously, the pushing of UMD movies only serves to destroy our hobby.

Or watching crap movie selection on a super-crappy LCD screen embedded in the plane seat in front of you.ManaByte said:PSP + movie + headphones on a plane is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> listening to whiny kids on the flight.
That's what I thought, why bother keeping up with UMD movies when there are better options available for you. Surely the demographic of PSP users isn't that stupid.Deku said:I'm still confused with what they hope to achieve with UMD movies. THe format is already outdated.

citrus lump said:Really the UMD format is severly limited right now. You can play em on your psp. That's it.
Will there be future products that play them? I wouldn't think they'd look too good on a TV. If other portable players release one would think they'd be alot cheaper, since they won't play games. Will this hurt PSP sales? Maybe, maybe not. Places that carry them will get more sales, but will they sell more games?
I dread the day that stuff like UMD movies sell better at game stores than games themselves.
AniHawk said:Already happens. It's 9 million games vs. 8.1 million movies (shipped, of course, but expect the latter number to rise much faster).

Reign it in, Chicken Little. This hobby arose in the face of pre-existing TV and Movie industries and has grown significantly over the past 3-4 decades to rival those industries in some ways and is even cited as the cause for decline in the viewership of those latter two industries in recent years.citrus lump said:But seriously, the pushing of UMD movies only serves to destroy our hobby.
Supposedly. Sony has opened the licensing enough to allow that and there have been rumors of CE manufacturers dabbling with this. Will there be future products that play them?
From what's been reported, UMD movies are supposed to be encoded at the same resolution as DVDs. I don't think anyone has been able to independtly corroborate that though.I wouldn't think they'd look too good on a TV.

argon said:I went in to Best Buy today and noticed they no longer have ANY PSP games on shelves in the game section... its all UMD movies.
Above the movies they have a few notebooks with PSP games listed, and a notice that says "For PSP games see a sales representative." Anyone else see this at Best Buy?

citrus lump said:Actually, now that I think about it, my nearest best buy might be the same. I'll have to go check it out.
Deku said:The new Best Buy that opened here in Canada have exactly 2 - 3 shelves devoted to all games.
the hardware distribution is selling at a similar rate.
AniHawk said:Weeeeeeeellll it wasn't our own decision, it was pretty literally by the book.
quadriplegicjon said:the fact that companies have to pay for shelf space is a bit ... disheartening. do any other markets work like this?
Am I the only person who doesn't understand how these UMD movies sell? I was excited to get Spiderman 2 packed into the PSP package, but when I got around to watching it I found myself really not enjoying it. Maybe if the UMD prices were cheaper ($10) instead of retail price for DVD's I'd buy another one to see if the experience changes.
CoolTrick said:But did you actually enjoy them, or did they just waste some time by giving you something to look at? Watching movies on the go doesn't give me anywhere near the feeling you get when watching a movie at home. You can't really immerse yourself in it.
Could you clarify this?
Mr_Moogle said:The last time I saw thid years slaes figures they looked pretty close. These numbers says theres a difference of about 325 000 in total sales this year. I wouldnt say that was a huge gap. Nintendo's headstart was more advantageous.

PlayStation 2 - 27,161 [1,349,842] units

Remember that I'm focussing on the Japanese market. I'm sure things are different in the US.
