A group of homebrew development enthusiasts attempting to get Linux running on the Nintendo DS have made something of a breakthrough this past week, managing to get a homebrew demo running on the dual screen handheld through a pass-through.

Misunderstanding on my part. By "managing to get a homebrew demo running on the dual screen handheld through a pass-through" I thought they had manged to toy with the hardware so they could display video from an external source on it.

However, a pass-through is evidently a device used to run external code through the DS card port.

Is that the deal with this? These Linux enthusiasts sort of lay the foundation for system hackers (emulation and piracy) down the line? Or are they basically the same people?

I'd guess the idea is that in an ideal world it should be easy to get anything to work on any platform, and getting a widespread open source operating system running on a device is a good first step.

It's an obsession, it's a way of life. One of affluent inclination can reap immense satisfaction from porting Linux to a dual-cycle washing machine.

Linux is an operating system. Once you have the operating system up and running you can get the device to do other things.

(for instance turn your xbox into a file server / web server / HTPC).

Once linux is running on the DS then you can make way for mp3 and videoplayback, smaller homebrew apps etc.

Since linux is so small and versatile, as an OS its an obvious choice to try and get up and running on these devices...

also, the Tux squad is a little obsessive.

They're just following. DarkFader, Joat and Dovoto had passthroughs built first and joat and dovoto created the demos they are running.

hahahahaha, I almost fall of the chair, thanks for it iapetus.

It would be nice a SCUMM emulator stylus enabled to emulate a mouse if Lucasarts doen´t go for it.
