How does this compare to previous efforts they allowed to play Steam games on Android I wonder. Haven't had the chance to watch the video though.

Better than preexisting PC translation efforts, but there are quite a lot of games that have issues (Hi-Fi Rush being a more notable one)

This seems like a pretty big deal. And also a big hint that Steam Deck 2 might use an ARM chip.
The ARM efforts are focused toward Frame. That said if AMD isn't going to have a decent option in a year or two, ARM might be the way to go.

That's pretty neat. Doesn't look like it's quite ready for primetime considering he said 50% of the small indie games he tried didn't work, but that's definitely great considering it just released.

That's right the first beta release of Proton 11 is out with one major change. It has as both x64 and ARM64 releases.

The updates at first glance don't look that big.
Just updating things to the latest versions. Wine 11 has some the potential for big performance improvements in edge cases. But it's the FEX-2604 that's the big news. This was previously available, but not in an official Proton release. For people not in the know, FEXEmu is the x86/x64 to ARM64 emulator Valve has been sponsoring. This allows AMD/Intel written games to run on ARM CPUs. DXVK and VKD3D where already doing the graphics translation and made the Steam Deck able to pull off what it has. But same graphics ability always just worked on ARM devices that supported Vulkan. So it's the CPU translation that was the missing piece. And yes there's some overhead like any emulation, but modern ARM CPUs are very powerful and will surprise a lot of people.

If you have any of those ARM handhelds that you were running Steam games on already. They have possibly been updated to Proton 11 already which will bring about a better compatiblity. I mean it was already ported to modded Nintendo Switches that are running Linux.

If I were at AMD I'd focus all efforts on making something RDNA4 with better efficiency and graphical compute than panther lake but unfortunately that would require them to give a fuck

I would still prefer a fully fledged SD2 to stick to x86 until arm chips can get to the point where they'll deliver significantly better performance, but a steam deck mini with a more efficient ARM processor for a smaller and lighter battery sounds dreamlike

More official support is a great sign.

Steam support on android has been improving massively over the last 12 months. Gamenative and Gamehub have been an absolute revelation. I'm currently playing Dishonored on my Odin 2. 720p medium, pretty well locked 60fps. it's like witchcraft

I am still skeptical, but if they get this out now and spend a couple years polishing it, maybe it'll be good enough.

As cool as this is I wonder if Valve will eventually piss off publishers with their pro consumer shenanigans. If I can slap a controller attachment on my cheap ass android tablet and play all my Steam games why would I buy this mobile version of your game.

I mean more desktop sales is surely better, mobile versions are usually cheaper.

If this ends up becoming mainstream, they'll have no choice since Valve will not only have the PC but mobile markets wrapped around their finger.

Game accessibility is worth every little c suite aneurysm.

One game seeing a huge upgrade in performance is Nex Machina. You no longer need the extra launch parameters and can crank up the settings to 'Recommended.' Looks and plays much better now.

Also tried Returnal but it doesn't launch on Proton 11.

Not possible. I was assured by others that Valve doesn't actually do anything

This is one of the things valve is doing that I'm all in on..I am genuinely more hyped for the possibility of this reaching Deck levels of compat than any future hardware from them
and more hyped for this than half life 3 but gaf will crucify me for admitting this.

I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do on my Ayn Thor. Exciting stuff

Man the Thor is doing so well for ayn it feels nice to finally see their quality hit the mainstream. I'm waiting for a Thor 2 with an SD elite 8 gen 5 (or even better) to hit the market. A stylus holder and its own stylus compatibility would be even better too, make it a true DS replacement. Ive seen those phone styluses, but you can't really put them anywhere on the device and they're kind of large and awkward compared to my 3DS stylus.

Plus the possibilities for phone gaming are insane. I know many people look down on mobile gaming rightfully so but it's gonna be harder to do that when it enables you to continue your Requiem playthrough at work with a device that fits in your pocket. Imagine looking over your shoulder on the metro or something and seeing some teenager playing CS2 on his phone lol

Thor 2 should be good. Hopefully Ayn will give it couple of years for component prices to settle a bit.

As far as phone gaming goes, sure, it works, but that eats up your battery like crazy and well, I need my phone to function for other stuff.

Otherwise, sure, if you have a decent Android phone you can easily game.

I would be way more tempted to buy the game on Steam so I can play on my PC and Android device with cloud saves than just paying for the mobile version.

With official Steam support on Android, I would buy so many games on Steam in order to play them on my Odin 2. You have no idea.

And mobile versions are few and far between. Two or three good ports in a year.

Nvidia kind of conducts themselves like they're too good for dedicated video game systems (besides Nintendo) these days, wouldn't bet on it tbh.
"Besides Nintendo" is doing a hell of a lot of work in that sentence, as if Nintendo isn't real like GAF always pretends

The reality is that Nvidia has long wanted to be a player in this space but without an x86 license there's nothing they could do about it when Sony wanted x86 not ARM

If Nvidia N1 works out in the laptop space, we might see some re-evaluation of Nvidia viability for home consoles by Sony but not until PS7 since the PS6 design is already locked at this point

Game has definitely been hinting at getting SteamOS working on SBC like Raspberry Pi's, Orange Pi's etc and Android devices. But it also makes me wonder if Valve will have a newer ARM based handheld on the horizon? I don't imagine them dumping AMD, given how good AMD support has been on Linux and it is a 'higher end' option. but for a lower end gaming device?

Sony aren't going to switch to Nvidia because their backwards compatibility relies on AMD graphics shader binaries. You are more likely to see Xboxes with Nvidia chips.

If the only customer they want to serve is Nintendo then I'm gonna point that out. Nvidia havent done anything for Sony, Microsoft, and even Valve. Nintendo is an important player undoubtedly, but if they ignore the other game systems they're not really playing much in the market.

Why not just make graphics hardware for phones like Android and such? It's fucking Nvidia, their graphics for mobile would blow mediatek and Apple out of the water. Phones are much more lucrative than gaming while still having their own gaming segment so they could have started there. It would have paid off more now since they'd have established phone support and many of the ARM emulation handhelds would have benefited quite a bit.

ETA Prime jumping on this to make a new video like usual... Lol

He showcases some other games, one particularly impressive one is red Dead redemption 2 although that's using gamehub (powered by proton 11)

Yeah it's been wild how much progress has been made with performance/compatibility. GHL has been solid for me and Gamenative has been improving at an insane pace lately. Even on an older Oneplus 12 I can play some PC games I wouldn't expect to work, but they do.

So let me get this straight. Steam games could be running natively from a Android tablet or phone in the future? My guess is that Apple won't allow this on their devices. It's enough for me to make the switch.

Dont think this is considered "native" since it is a translation layer like with Proton. But no.....seriously doubt you'lll be able to do this on iphone or ipad. Macs, more than likely, at some point

Why not? Isn't it a massive boon for apple on the gaming front?
