looking at the top ten it's interesting there are 4 new franchises on the ds and none on the psp. this moves up to 5 if you include nintendogs, half the top ten! (*edited)

i think it's clear the psp is appealing to existing (ps2) gamers, sequels to ps2 games sell, so sequels are what developers are making. whereas the ds looks like it may be expanding the gaming market. also developers are more likely to create original titles for the ds as they sell reasonably well, and have lower dev costs (than psp games).

too bad those numbers don't include the "nintendogs effect" , things have changed a lot since the game is out in japan :)

Then using this logic we would include Metal Gear Ac!d since it's a new game using existing franchise characters and Piposaru Academia for the same reason.

A Nintendo console with poor third party sales but great first party sales? SHOCK AND AWE.

Its interesting to see how the numbers for 4th place and down are almost the same for both handhelds.

Any clue on when we're gonna see last week's numbers?

Naruto is the first third party game to sell 100k on DS, I believe.
The last 3 weeks have done wonders for the tie ratio of the DS too, thanks to the puppies and Naruto.

Most of the non-morons here already knew that both were here to stay. For better or for worse. This... news, however, won't shut the true morons up.

I chucked these numbers into excel and here's what I've come up with:
Total:
DS 27 games, 10 1st party, 17 3rd party
PSP 32 games, 7 first party, 25 3rd party

DS total software sales 3,148,288
PSP total software sales 2,196,119

DS 1st party software sales 2,420,040
PSP 1st party software sales 703,776
DS 3rd party software sales 728,248
PSP 3rd party software sales 1,492,343

DS sales per game 116,603
PSP sales per game 68,629
DS sales per 3rd party game 42,838
PSP sales per 3rd party game 59,694

So DS software sales are overall higher, but it is because Nintendo games just sell so much. In fact almost half the games sold between the 2 systems are 1st party Nintendo games. The thing with these numbers though is that the launch games have a bit of a monopoly on the sales. Mario and Wario account for almost half the DS total, and other big sellers like Pokemon Dash and Project Rub were DS launch games. Same with the psp and Hotshots, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear and Dynasty Warriors all available within days of launch.

The psp is definitely doing better on the 3rd party front with 50% more games and double the sales. In fact just looking at raw numbers it is a clear winner. The thing is, the PSP has received a higher quality of 3rd party game. FWIW If you ignore the psp big hitters(no DS 3rd party big hitters yet) the sales are fairly comparable. Also, if you ignore launch games, then both systems have done similarly well now that Naruto DS is pulling out numbers comparable with Tales of Eternia. In fact Naruto alone has increased the DS 3rd party total by over 10%.

Cool, I'd been wondering about this, as the last time we saw such a list was using January or early February numbers. The tie ratios indeed confirm that people do buy games with their PSPs, they're just less likely to be hitting the weekly top 10 lists.

PSP has definitely had the bigger third party hits thus far, though how much credit for that should go to a receptive audience, lack of Nintendo competition, and having the more major series releases thus far is I believe open to debate. Certainly other than Ridge Racers, Dynasty Warriors, and Tales of Eternia the PSP third party list looks a lot like the DS one. On a total separate note of surprise, Ridge Racer DS hasn't released in Japan?

Here's the chart of the day. Combined game sales for the system placed on a bar graph. Light gray is DS 1st party, pink is DS 3rd party, black is PSP 1st party, violet is PSP 3rd party.

For some reason the chart isn't displaying directly on the forums for me, but here it is: http://www.2and2.net/Uploads/Images/20050507pspdssoftwarea.gif

At first I was skeptical because of the effect of a sudden increase in user base. In the more recent two weeks of Media Create sales the DS hardware total has gone up by 5.74%, so it would take more than 180,000 games sold just to break even. However, since Naruto + Nintendogs did a combined 266K in just the latter of those weeks, it probably has gone up by at least 0.1 over those two weeks.

EDIT: Had Bleach listed as PSP 3rd party instead of 1st. Listing, totals, averages, chart fixed.

Also, if you only count games for whom the digits of the sales numbers add up to 15, the N-Gage is the leading handheld in the US!
I believe our point is more that it seems like both systems can do very decently on the big name titles, but that DS's selection of big-name titles is almost exclusively first party as of this list. The fact that Tales of Eternia is more successful than Feel the Magic doesn't necessarily mean that big third party software would do much worse on DS.

The entire problem with this topic is that the creator was too impatient to wait another week or so for MediaCreate numbers.

How can everyone go off analyzing NDS 1st and 3rd party sales when we just had the fastest selling NDS first party game yet, as well as a third party Naruto game that has done just as well?

Why would you even bother to go through all the trouble of computing the software sales of all the games, then just the third, then just the first, the tie ratios, etc., when it's not even currently applicable?!

You might as well go take an NPD from last year to base statements on the current console wars.

The fact that Naruto was just released already pushes total third party NDS sales much much closer to the PSP

Because I have a deep-seeded need to provide information that is only semi-helpful, here are the english titles of the games in the DS and PSP Top 10's:

7.Another Code-Nintendo-104,114
8.Polarium-Nintendo-102,330
9.Feel The Magic:XY/XX-Sega-97,629

Weird how 3 games on the PSP's Top 10 will most likely never come out in North America.

You would think so, wouldn't you. But due to the lower development costs on DS, publishers make bigger margins, so it's attracting a lot of third parties. At the moment, it's pretty neck and neck as far as announced games goes.

We have the Media Create top 10 up to the end of April already. This data was in the latest issue of Dorimaga and I typed it up because I figured some people might be interested in the sales of titles that haven't charted recently, such as Lumines, Meteos, etc. The sales of Nintendogs and Naruto won't do much to alter the ratio of 1st:3rd party sales, and as Joshua pointed out, they don't affect the tie ratio a whole lot.

Rock_Man, good point that I missed somehow. It's kinda funny how 95% of the games on these 2 systems are exclusives.

The entire problem with this topic is that the creator was too impatient to wait another week or so for MediaCreate numbers.

The fact that Naruto was just released already pushes total third party NDS sales much much closer to the PSP

First, these are new numbers since they include totals for games that have dropped out of the top ten. Second, Naruto had an effect but not that much. It would bring the DS 3rd party total to a bit over 800K, with the PSP 3rd party total standing around 1.5M. What Naruto does show is that 3rd party games can sell well on the DS, it is actually the second biggest selling 3rd party game on either system post launch week. Second only to Tales of Eternia PSP.

What is really interesting though, is that one of the main drivers for the 3rd party numbers on the psp is Namco. Their games have a total of 591K out of 1.492M. In other words, 40% of 3rd party games sold on the psp are Namco published. Without them the psp total goes down to 900K, which is a lot closer to the DS total.

That doesn´t mean third party games automatically sell better on psp.

DS Mahjong Taikai - Koei - 34,545
PSP Mahjong Taikai - Koei - 15,264

DS Puyo Puyo Fever - Sega - 82,898
PSP Puyo Puyo Fever - Sega - 49,345

The psp is definitely doing better on the 3rd party front with 50% more games and double the sales. In fact just looking at raw numbers it is a clear winner. The thing is, the PSP has received a higher quality of 3rd party game. FWIW If you ignore the psp big hitters(no DS 3rd party big hitters yet) the sales are fairly comparable. Also, if you ignore launch games, then both systems have done similarly well now that Naruto DS is pulling out numbers comparable with Tales of Eternia. In fact Naruto alone has increased the DS 3rd party total by over 10%.

In what kind of universe do you live in that you ignore things? Jesus.

The fact is that I doubt third parties have had as much time to tap into the creative side of the NDS as opposed to the PSP. Naruto DS was most likely a GBA game that was just quickly converted to be for the NDS.

Naruto will probably have around 200-300K total, so that's going to increase the third party total a lot. Games like FFIII, Shonen Super Stars, and Castlevania will probably push really big numbers. Of course, with Nintendogs release, we've seen a lot of GBA/older DS games get pushed back onto the charts. I remember seeing Harvest Moon DS in one of the daily totals.

It's still too early to make a justified comparison between the two systems. It's going to take until after the 2005 holiday season to see how both systems will stack up. Of course, if Nintendogs causes the DS to pull the lead so far, it might be over before it's begun. :p

Completely ignoring things: bad idea. Pruning the extraneous to try and approximate an apple-to-apple comparison: can be handy.

I wasn't even aware there had been a Harvest Moon DS released in Japan until I saw it at #20 one day. Where is it on the chart?

I'm really tempted to just ignore you with your inability to grasp the concepts of analysis.

People are ignoring things in this thread all the time. I suppose if you dont want to ignore anything then you can say that DS has sold almost double the hardware numbers, and sold 50% more software and so is the clear winner full stop. But then people say that DS isn't so hot for 3rd party games, by doing that they are ignoring 1st party sales. In the same way, if you want to look at normal games for the systems you have to ignore the big hitters. If you want to look at how the post launch games have done, you have to ignore the launch games.

I agree. FF:CC DS, Slime Mori Mori 2, Goemon, Lost in Blue, Dragon Quest Monsters series, Megaman Battle Network series, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Monster Rancher Jamboree, Secret of Mana series, etc. will all post good to even phenomenal numbers. (esp. the Shoen JSS) Increasing the 3rd party software tie ratio significanty. But then Mario Kart, AC, Pokémon Diamond & Pearl Versions release skewing it once again overwhelmingy in Nintendo's favor. But this is truely a moot point, Nintendo & Nintendo published software has always dominated on both their home & portable fronts. Has this stopped other companies from being extremely successful, profitable, or moving impressive units sales-wise? No. Sony is a 3rd party supported platform, the PSP is as well. So any breakdown, or attempted comparative analysis of 3rd party attach ratios between the two platforms then becomes only an effort in fanboy futility.
