DS VS PSP

The big games came actually in november. Tekken, Tsisted Metal, Jumping Flash, WipeOut, NFL GameDay, Destruction Derby and Doom were all released two months after launch.

Correct, sir! Also of note: Mortal Kombat 3 was exclusive to the PSx for about a month and was released in October as well.

Good work on those lists, Jarrod, there were more PSX launch games that I had remembered.

I'm gonna have to find an official release date on Bug! though. That one's starting to...ahem, bug me a bit.

-Ridge Racer (Namco)
-Battle Arena Toshinden (SCEA)
-Rayman (UbiSoft)
-Total Eclipse Turbo (Crystal Dynamics)
-NBA Jam: Tournament Edition (Acclaim)
-Raiden Project (SCEA)
-Power Serve Tennis (Ocean)
-Street Fighter: The Movie (Capcom)
-Kileak: The DNK Imperative (SCEA)

I think ESPN Extreme Games should be there too.

Yes. Does anyone know how much it sold compared to Tekken and Toshinden? Sales charts from this period would be interesting to analyse. :)

Based on rarity, MK3 is the rarest of the three. But then, I think Tohshinden was given a long print run, and Tekken went Greatest Hits. So, MK3 didn't sell as well as the others in the long run. But I remember it being a big deal when it was first released.

So, yeah, I went to my local Target on Saturday, March 26th late at night and noticed they still had 58 out of 60 PSP systems in stock so I started thinking bomba? Head back there today and there are only 7 left! Sold 51 over the last week. I live in a relatively small town too (35K) so now that the word is out about PSPs being available in non game stores I'm not surprised they are being snapped up! :D

My comments

The DS could be a great system. Nintendo, though, seems reluctant to devote many resources for software, which I don't understand. Third parties don't seem terribly inclined yet to think unconventionally or even develop anything significant at all when the PSP provides considerably more power. If nothing changes then the system will largely be a joke (though a decent value considering the price tag). Especially with GBA2, the seventh pillar or whatever, on the horizon. The potential is there, but only HAL seems to have done much with it so far. I like how its being underpowered invariably encourages developers to create 2D games (got my home consoles for 3D, thanks), but hate how none so far have been much more attractive than what the GBA has offered. It's ridiculous.

Then, as someone who rarely plays videogames outside the home and already owns an mp3 player, I largely see the PSP as a system that robs resources which would otherwise be for the PS2, probably just like the GBA2 will do in the future. So that's a little irritating as a consumer. But whatever. The system has a few really good games, Lumines in particular, and I'll probably get one down the road when something more significant comes out (hopefully a price drop by then). And I'm sure it's going to have a long lifespan.
