I've read through quite a bit of this thread, and all I've seen is people talking about how the top layer of their sticks are tearing/peeling off, and it hasn't happened to me yet. I'm really curious as to why that's happening to some.
Maybe it's because my hands don't sweat.. I dunno.
Edit: Upon closer inspection of my controller, I see that there is a slight indentation at the bottom of my left stick.. but I wouldn't have even noticed it, had I not looked really close for it. Yeah, my sticks are fine. Hope mine don't start peeling, too.
Well, Sony had to make revisions to their controller last generation, so I guess they might have to do it again.
You might have read some but obviously not enough, my hands don't sweat at all during gaming (hardly ever) because my hands are quite cold most of the time, yet ill be on my third DS4 soon.
The rubber can't handle friction very well, so depending on your playstyle it will become a problem sooner or later. People have also noticed a number of different rubber being used.
You might have got Lucky with your sticks or you might see a problem arise sonetime in the future but it most definitely is a problem.
Upon closer inspection you maybe should not have assumed the error was with users.
I see. My mistake.
Sorry for jumping on you man, the console warriors have tired me out. Hope your controller is actually fine.
I have two controllers: one that came with the PS4, bought in the UK, and another one that I bought in San Francisco.
The one that came with the PS4 has a faulty left trigger that doesn't go back to its full "normal" position, so I was using just the one I bought in the US.
It was all fine until I bought FIFA 14. After a week the left thumbstick has almost peeled off completely. Went to a Gamestop today and both controllers at the PS4 demo booth had peeled off left thumbsticks too - I guess this issue must be way bigger than what I thought.
Anyways, I'll have to call Sony customer service and return both controllers. Ridiculous.
Come on, Sony, fix this shit.
FIFA definitely seems to the biggest DS4 killer. The rubber obviously just isn't up to the constant direction changing.
I just called Sony's CS and I don't think this issue will be 100% solved anytime soon. FIFA is definitely a DS4 killer - the CS rep over the phone said he had the same problem himself with both his controllers and just recommend that I buy rubber grips (which I already did anyway) to avoid the problem.
Asked for any indications if Sony was working to solve this issue, and got the usual PR reply; a good indicator of "nope, it's just cheaper to replace the rubber on faulty controllers anyway".
Second controller now splitting.
I should not be required to purchase thumb pads to "protect" the controller.
Never had this happen on other controllers. Very weird.
This is a global issue with the controller, not something we are doing wrong, period.
It seems to be an issue for many, but I'd really like to know why the problem doesn't manifest for everyone. Is there some actual differences with how people use the controller, and does it manifest more often for those who're accustomed to use their thumbs like they did on the 360 pad? After all, from what I've understood, people use different parts of their thumbs, depending on what they've used to; the tip or the joint, for me the former, as I've accustomed to the DS3.
EDIT: For furher information, three of my Finnish friends have a launch PS4, and none of them have had problems with the sticks.
That's ridiculous.
Doesn't matter why. It's an issue. You should be glad it's not an issue for you. Come back when it happens.
Probably a matter of batches or manufacturing methods. I don't think it has anything to do with how the controller is used.It seems to be an issue for many, but I'd really like to know why the problem doesn't manifest for everyone.
that describes my stick as well. as for your question, i'd like to know, too.Boss★Moogle;106277291 said:I thought the DS4 issues were overblown but it just happened to me. It's not worn out or anything but it split open. The tear looks like I took a scalpel and made an incision but I obviously didn't.
I read somewhere that Sony would replace your DS4 if it happened to you, is that true? If so what do I do: just call them or is there a website?

Mine doesn't have the problem. At this point, with the amount of play I put into it, especially since Infamous: SS launched, I see absolutely no reason to believe it ever will, either. I don't think this is an inherent flaw in the design so much as a manufacturing issue with the rubber-to-plastic bonding process. I've heard people here describe the rubber as feeling "loose" before it starts tearing, as if it's come unglued from the underlying plastic. That's pretty obviously a manufacturing defect. That's the reason Sony continues to replace them, because they know it.
What that also means is that, if you've been playing since launch, it would have failed by now. If it hasn't failed yet, it probably never will.

I'll definitely do so, if it happens.
It just sounds odd to me, as none of my friends have the same issue. Can the American models be somehow different from ours?
I wonder if it has more to do with the types of games played. Think of sports games like Fifa or NBA 2K, or multiplayer games like BF4 that people put hundreds of hours into. It might be that those who play and finish games just put less time on their controllers than those who invest a ton of time in certain game..... Pure speculation on my part.

Been following this since launch and logged a disgusting amount of hours into my two ds4s. I have minimal damage and I can see where one might start to decay a bit, it's definitely headed that way, but the grip is so damn good I don't even care. At this rate it's one new controller a year which is about what I buy anyways so it's a non issue for me personally.
I meant if you're going to mask the issue do it on a brand new controller. Because they are such a tight fit if the original rubber padding is beginning to deteriorate it may just delay rather than save it.
How many have come back and realized they actually do have the issue after thinking they're fine? It's a problem.
This is annoying. Have they even admitted it yet? That's what makes me think every single controller is susceptible. It's too common at this point so they'd have to do a recall. Wouldn't it be easier to take your CC # and charge you if you don't return your damaged controller within a certain time? I think they even want you to pay for shipping.

A best buy employee told us that Sony took back all old controllers. We just purchased our 2nd PS4 and the sticks have improved. So the only thing that they haven't addressed are all the bad controllers that are still out, sounds like they're trying to keep it hush hush.
Do the sticks on your new DS4 actually look or feel different than the sticks on your old DS4?
Yes, they definitely feel different and if you look closely they do look different. You can tell that the rubber has more texture. They're not as gummy.
Interesting. The sticks on my DS4 are very textury. Rough even. Hopefully they're part of a new, better batch. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.
Sorry for jumping on you man, the console warriors have tired me out. Hope your controller is actually fine.
My controller seem fine even after 300 hours use and i am sharing it with my brother, it seems that the issue is multiple of bad batches of controllers.
Huh?! I've still got a working Sixaxis from the 60GB PS3, although the battery and the left stick have worn out. I only bought two DS3s during the six years I used the PS3.
