DS4 thumb sticks might have a problem?

I took both my controllers back and they replaced them straight away.
Apparently they are contracted by SONY to do this so they get their money back off them.
Thats GAME uk by the way.

I've read through quite a bit of this thread, and all I've seen is people talking about how the top layer of their sticks are tearing/peeling off, and it hasn't happened to me yet. I'm really curious as to why that's happening to some.

Maybe it's because my hands don't sweat.. I dunno.

Edit: Upon closer inspection of my controller, I see that there is a slight indentation at the bottom of my left stick.. but I wouldn't have even noticed it, had I not looked really close for it. Yeah, my sticks are fine. Hope mine don't start peeling, too.

Well, Sony had to make revisions to their controller last generation, so I guess they might have to do it again.

Upon closer inspection you maybe should not have assumed the error was with users.

You might have read some but obviously not enough, my hands don't sweat at all during gaming (hardly ever) because my hands are quite cold most of the time, yet ill be on my third DS4 soon.

The rubber can't handle friction very well, so depending on your playstyle it will become a problem sooner or later. People have also noticed a number of different rubber being used.

You might have got Lucky with your sticks or you might see a problem arise sonetime in the future but it most definitely is a problem.

Upon closer inspection you maybe should not have assumed the error was with users.

I see. My mistake.

Sorry for jumping on you man, the console warriors have tired me out. Hope your controller is actually fine.

It's all good. And I hope people that are having trouble with this gets everything resolved without it being too costly.
Hopefully Sony is listening, and is working on a revised version.. or at least shipping Dualshock 4's with stick covers, or something!

I have two controllers: one that came with the PS4, bought in the UK, and another one that I bought in San Francisco.

The one that came with the PS4 has a faulty left trigger that doesn't go back to its full "normal" position, so I was using just the one I bought in the US.

It was all fine until I bought FIFA 14. After a week the left thumbstick has almost peeled off completely. Went to a Gamestop today and both controllers at the PS4 demo booth had peeled off left thumbsticks too - I guess this issue must be way bigger than what I thought.

Anyways, I'll have to call Sony customer service and return both controllers. Ridiculous.

Come on, Sony, fix this shit.

Thumbsticks on my controllers were goddawful. I ordered these grips for them though, and it's working really well. I like it more than the original sticks when they weren't broken.

FIFA definitely seems to the biggest DS4 killer. The rubber obviously just isn't up to the constant direction changing.

I just called Sony's CS and I don't think this issue will be 100% solved anytime soon. FIFA is definitely a DS4 killer - the CS rep over the phone said he had the same problem himself with both his controllers and just recommend that I buy rubber grips (which I already did anyway) to avoid the problem.

Asked for any indications if Sony was working to solve this issue, and got the usual PR reply; a good indicator of "nope, it's just cheaper to replace the rubber on faulty controllers anyway".

i have 2 controllers from launch, with the following games:
killzone
bf4
all the free ps+ stuff
injustice
infamous
cod

no issues on either of them yet, and ive got mitts on me like a creature out of greek mythology. hoping they last....

I have this aswell, let's hope both my controlers left sticks can hold for a while with them.

edit: Nice, just got promoted to member :)

I'm starting to think that part of the problem is the shape of the analog, along with the material used. I think they went back to the material the DS3 uses, but the shape makes wear and tear occur more quickly.

Mine is starting to rub off (leaving a nasty black residue on the controller and my thumbs as well), not nice.

Ordered some replacement analog stick caps off ebay (although i ordered both PS4 and 360 caps i'll probably just use the 360 one since i like the shape more), hopefully it works out.

Little update from the no-problems-so-far side...
(Remove the "l" before the ".jpg" for bigger picture.)

EDIT: EU launch model, used for four months.

Today

Games finished:
Killzone
Resogun (Platinum)
Flower
Tomb Raider
Infamous

And a plethora of demos and FTPs played. The issue still puzzles me.

Second controller now splitting.

I should not be required to purchase thumb pads to "protect" the controller.

Never had this happen on other controllers. Very weird.

Yup I dont want to buy anything else since its not supposed to break apart. Heck my PS3 controller is still good to this day. My PS4 controller started peeling less than 1 month into its life and I havent been gaming so much either.

This is a global issue with the controller, not something we are doing wrong, period. I may return it before my 1 year is up. Not only is mine peeling, but the left stick makes a squeeky noise that drives me nuts when I move it slowly towards a direction. WTF.

i've got a slight tear on my right stick after 500+ hours on Warframe. sooner or later it's bound to happen to all of us. i love the DS4, but the build quality sucks.

It seems to be an issue for many, but I'd really like to know why the problem doesn't manifest for everyone. Is there some actual differences with how people use the controller, and does it manifest more often for those who're accustomed to use their thumbs like they did on the 360 pad? After all, from what I've understood, people use different parts of their thumbs, depending on what they've used to; the tip or the joint, for me the former, as I've accustomed to the DS3.

EDIT: For furher information, three of my Finnish friends have a launch PS4, and none of them have had problems with the sticks.

That's ridiculous.
Doesn't matter why. It's an issue. You should be glad it's not an issue for you. Come back when it happens.

I thought the DS4 issues were overblown but it just happened to me. It's not worn out or anything but it split open. The tear looks like I took a scalpel and made an incision but I obviously didn't.

I read somewhere that Sony would replace your DS4 if it happened to you, is that true? If so what do I do: just call them or is there a website?

I'll definitely do so, if it happens.

It just sounds odd to me, as none of my friends have the same issue. Can the American models be somehow different from ours?

Probably a matter of batches or manufacturing methods. I don't think it has anything to do with how the controller is used.

Mine doesn't have the problem. At this point, with the amount of play I put into it, especially since Infamous: SS launched, I see absolutely no reason to believe it ever will, either. I don't think this is an inherent flaw in the design so much as a manufacturing issue with the rubber-to-plastic bonding process. I've heard people here describe the rubber as feeling "loose" before it starts tearing, as if it's come unglued from the underlying plastic. That's pretty obviously a manufacturing defect. That's the reason Sony continues to replace them, because they know it.

What that also means is that, if you've been playing since launch, it would have failed by now. If it hasn't failed yet, it probably never will.

that describes my stick as well. as for your question, i'd like to know, too.

Ah, that sounds totally different from what my sticks feel like, which is reassuring as I've worried about having to buy another controller. There's probably been a faulty batch. I wonder if the issue is mostly manifesting in America, where the system launched earlier, or whether it's a problem in a global scale?

Pretty much. It seems the DS4 really has lots of problems. I have squeeky triggers and while my thumb sticks didn't tear open or anything like that, the textures on the left stick already faded after just a week of using it. My friend also has the same stick problems and he got the sticky R1 problem.

Otoh my DS3 from 7 years ago still has it's textures on the sticks and no problems with any buttons and/or triggers.

Instead of replacing everyone's faulty controllers, Sony should have better QC and use better materials.

I still think it's unacceptable.

Thankfully I bought cheap covers on eBay for less than two bucks and free shipping, so it's not such an issue, but still , making a controller that can't even last two months before needing to buy spare parts from china ?

Good manufacturing Sony.

PS. Adding a drop of WD40 fixed the sticky R1 and R2 triggers for me... Good to know for you guys having the issues. But still, another example of a badly tested product. I should not have to dismantle and add a lubricant and change it's joy-pad covers less than two months after owning it.

I wonder if it has more to do with the types of games played. Think of sports games like Fifa or NBA 2K, or multiplayer games like BF4 that people put hundreds of hours into. It might be that those who play and finish games just put less time on their controllers than those who invest a ton of time in certain game..... Pure speculation on my part.

My thumbsticks are showing a bit more wear and tear these days, mostly because I've been playing FIFA more than before. What I still don't get about the controller, or mine in particular, is that I only have a problem with then while playing FIFA. My thumbs still slide off the bloody things. But when I play anything else I forget it even was an issue. I did buy grips for the thumbsticks but I don't like how it feels at all, especially for FIFA. I'm waiting to see what SONY does regarding this before buying another controller.

One of my friends actually plays BF4 every week, so I don't think that's a contributing factor. And getting a platinum on Resogun wasn't easy on the sticks either. ;)

and the pressure area of thumb too.

I've seen some moving around by the edge of stick, which it isn't suppose be.

Been following this since launch and logged a disgusting amount of hours into my two ds4s. I have minimal damage and I can see where one might start to decay a bit, it's definitely headed that way, but the grip is so damn good I don't even care. At this rate it's one new controller a year which is about what I buy anyways so it's a non issue for me personally.

Huh?! I've still got a working Sixaxis from the 60GB PS3, although the battery and the left stick have worn out. I only bought two DS3s during the six years I used the PS3.

I meant if you're going to mask the issue do it on a brand new controller. Because they are such a tight fit if the original rubber padding is beginning to deteriorate it may just delay rather than save it.

How many have come back and realized they actually do have the issue after thinking they're fine? It's a problem.

This is annoying. Have they even admitted it yet? That's what makes me think every single controller is susceptible. It's too common at this point so they'd have to do a recall. Wouldn't it be easier to take your CC # and charge you if you don't return your damaged controller within a certain time? I think they even want you to pay for shipping.

I would only do this to decorate. If I were you, I'd call Sony and have it replaced before doing so, while it's under warranty if you see signs of wearing out.

I just called Sony's CS and I don't think this issue will be 100% solved anytime soon.

A best buy employee told us that Sony took back all old controllers. We just purchased our 2nd PS4 and the sticks have improved. So the only thing that they haven't addressed are all the bad controllers that are still out, sounds like they're trying to keep it hush hush.

I have a set of these too that a buddy gave me, they're pretty nice work well

Do the sticks on your new DS4 actually look or feel different than the sticks on your old DS4?

Yes, they definitely feel different and if you look closely they do look different. You can tell that the rubber has more texture. They're not as gummy.

Interesting. The sticks on my DS4 are very textury. Rough even. Hopefully they're part of a new, better batch. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I have two ds4s. One from launch day console and one I bought before ps4 was released.

I mixed them up so I don't know which is which but I imagine both of mine are apart of the bad batch you guys are talking about. The controller I have been using the most feels like the left sticks top portion isn't as high as the right stick. If that makes any sense. It's not a huge problem but it does feel like there's less rubber or whatever on the top part of left stick.

Just thought I would contribute. Also I hope there's a cool special editon destiny controller in September. I'd defintely get a third controller for that. The rougher sticks sound nice.

My controller seem fine even after 300 hours use and i am sharing it with my brother, it seems that the issue is multiple of bad batches of controllers.

Yeah, I think that is probably the case, with maybe some sort of confounding variable like a particular chemical in some peoples sweat or something, and playing FIFA. Damn FIFA ;)

It's not the total playing time. It just takes one moment of force applied from a side and you may get a tear. My controller was fine after 200+ hours of Battlefield but I decided to buy rubber caps because concave sticks hurt my thumbs. The left stick started cracking when I was applying the rubber cap. I don't want to be left without a controller for weeks while it's being replaced so I'll keep it like that for now. Rubber caps prevent further damage and feel much more comfortable. But I won't spend my money on another controller until Sony sorts this issue out.

I don't know, i treat them like guitar strings, you can go six years without changing them but is it better if you change them out regularly? Of course it is.

my ps4 analog sticks were fine, but i got 2 pair of GripIt coversboth for $5. theyre awesome once broken in. problem solved.

I think some people are getting paranoid about this "issue", in all my friends who bought a PS4, none are dealing with an issue on the DS4, and mine is fine too of course.

We should make a poll, who had a problem, and who didn't.

No problem with my two controllers. I have Fifa, Infamous etc so they are used heavily. For how many controllers that are out there the amount of people complaining seems too low to blame it on the stick material. It's just a bad batch that has got past control which is a shame. Hope everyone having problems gets it sorted.
