I was thinking of picking up a dSLR... my choices are pretty much between the d50 and XT but the XT feels really uncomfortable so I'm pretty set on the Nikon.

Should I just skip the d50 and go straight for the d70? I plan on getting the d50 with the 18-70mm lens which would save me about 200 dollars over the d70. Any experiences with the d50? Keep in mind, I'm still a beginner.

I'd personally skip the D50 and go for the D70 if you want to go the Nikon route. I looked at both when I was researching, and the D70 just seems to have more bang for your buck.

I'm a beginner too, but settled on the XT. Took the camera to 'nam over the summer. Got some shots you could peruse over to help you decide. Remember I'm a beginner as well. :lol

Why did you decide on the XT over the Nikon?

I was thinking of getting the D70 but from reading forums and seeing some sample pictures, the D50 doesn't need as much post processing, plus there's less noise... although less features.

Nice pics btw. I like the street shots.

Was initially going to get the D70, but then found the D70S was the only one available, and the improvements of the S over the D70 didn't seem significant enough to warrant the extra expense.

You can't really go wrong with either camera in fairness.

If noise is a big concern, you should be going with Canon anyway.

Well in reality, it's probably negligible.

I really wanted the Canon but it just doesn't seem to fit in my hands.
I'll give it another go before I order the d50

Perhaps try the XT with optional battery grip? Not sure if it'd make much difference.

But yeah, about noise, XT has ISO 100 if that's of any interest to you.

Do you really want to avoid post-processing? You're probably going to find a lot of shots fresh from the camera simply won't cut it, especially when you're making the transition from PnS cameras like I did.

Yes, both Rebel models have had ISO 100, and Canon's more expensive models have ISO 50. But beyond that, Canons have CMOS chips instead of the CCDs that Nikon uses.
And I'm a big believer in post-processing. Just be sure to use software with HDR (high dynamic range) support to maintain image integrity. And whatever you do, shoot raw.

Are you a beginner photog, beginner digital photog, or a beginner SLR user? .

If you have never used an SLR or have no need to mess with advanced features and whatnot, get a nice 10+MP non-SLR. If you want to fuck around with SLR why not just get a $200 film Rebel and see if you really want to mess with lugging around a heavy enough case/lenses and charging batteries everyday. Its a lot cheaper than blowing a grand on a potential dust magnet.

If you are a beginner photog I can't recommend a dSLR. I'd say the photo quality is negligible between a good non-SLR and prosumer (D50, Rebel) SLR to a beginner. And again recommend a high MP non-SLR or even a midrange non-SLR.

If you are stupid rich then by all means get whatever topoftheline Nikon.

XT is WAY better than the D50s. i'd get the D70 for a nikon. or just get the fucking canon 20D if bulk is what you're looking for, i've been using my bros for a few days now. The 20D is one hell of a camera, it's something else. I'll post some pictures later on.
