duckroll's special game identification challenge!

M is "AUBIRDFORCE" for PSone from Bandai

DO NOT FUCK WITH ME RIGHT NOW I AM DESTROYING YOUR GAME

EDIT: DID I SAY M I MEANT P. GOD FUCKING DAMMIT!!!

ArcadeStickMonk - Good catch there. :D

JackFrost2012 - You were going good but I think you got a letter mixed up. :lol (ok I counted it, but M is still cursed! :D)

jiji - Sorry no points. :(

Argyle - Excellent catch. What clued you in? The Fantasy Zone background? :D

gblues - Haha, it's not my fault that old PC developers loved to put the damn GAME TITLE AND LOGO as part of the GUI usually. :lol

Great going so far guys, a few more to go and nope the theme is still a mystery! :D

Wow, I see this is still going!

I'm stumped on the remaining games, though. I tried Googling everything I could and no dice so far...

D seems like Eternal Champions (Knight and Jetta are readable character names under the power bar) but the graphics are all wrong. Can anyone else take that as a starting point for a positive ID?

No D is not Eternal Champions, nor is it any Eternal Champions bootleg/hack/mod/ripoff/whatever. The name on the right is TETTA, not Jetta, for clarification. T is not thunderforce either. Nor any thunderforce bootleg/hack/mod/ripoff/whatever. You guys are barking up the wrong trees.

Oh and someone PLEASE solve F and M. It's easy..... really. Solve those and I'll give out clues for the rest! :D

Does F happen to be Risk?

Nathan

I say T is some port of Slap Fight. Barely looks like the arcade version (that I'm used to), but what's there is close enough.

I was thinking about Slap Fight too, but it's too different. Look at the order of the extras in the lower part of the Screenshot: in this case it's LASER | PULS | K-CON | HYPER and there's also an enemy lifebar (?) under the extras.

In Slap Fight the extras are Speed | | Side | Wing | Bomb | Laser | H. Mis | Shield. Maybe it's a bootleg or a hack.

Yeah, you're right, but I was thinking along the lines of an extremely downgraded Master System port or something, y'know? Maybe that doesn't exist...

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! F AND M ARE POSSIBLE! COME ON! FERRICIDE AND JIJI ALMOST GOT M! AND F ISN'T REALLY A JAPANESE GAME! There I've said it. Now go figure them out and I'll provide real clues for the rest, I promise!

Hahahahah fucking FINALLY! YAY

Ok, here are the clues.

(D) was released in 1993 on the PC-98
(E) is a Sunsoft game.
(T) is an arcade game.
(V) is by Wolf Team.

Happy hunting! :lol

Ok, have fun you two. I'm going off to watch Howl's Moving Castle now. I expect all this to be solved by the time I return! Come on, you guys should drag someone from Off Topic to solve the theme! :lol

V - Yaksa

Seems correct:

Actually, definitely correct, check out the island screen on the back of the box:
http://www.funet.fi/pub/msx/photos/gamecovers/Yaksa - Wolf Team.jpg

Okay. So, what's the theme? Here's the final list:

A. Vampire Hunter - anotheriori/The Faceless Master/ferricide
B. Master of Monsters - Tellaerin
C. JB Harold's Murder Club - anotheriori/john tv
D. Sword Dancer '93 - johnjohnson
E. Dead Zone - JackFrost2012
F. Balance of Power - johnjohnson
G. Elevator Action - The Faceless Master
H. Age of Empires - johnjohnson
I. Civilization: Call to Power - Greenpanda
J. Ultima Online - einhard
K. D no Shokutaku - demi/ferricide
L. Flash Point - Argyle
M. Xanadu - JackFrost2012
N. Final Fantasy - demi
O. The Screamer - gblues
P. AubirdForce - JackFrost2012
Q. Gun Bullet - bobbyconover
R. Balloon Fight - The Faceless Master/anotheriori
S. Soldier of Fortune - ArcadeStickMonk
T. Last Mission - johnjohnson
U. The Getaway - The Faceless Master
V. Yaksa - Tellaerin
W. The Man I Love - JackFrost2012/gblues
X. Ogre Battle - anotheriori
Y. Angelus - JackFrost2012
Z. Wizardry - JackFrost2012

Things of note:
- Many games here in a language other than their original one.
- Several are related to feudal Japan.
- The majority are RPGs, strategy, and adventure games.
- All of the screens have been resized to MSX2 resolution.

I dunno if there's a real "connection" between them. Whatever the connection is probably lies outside of the games themselves.

Okay, so, there are 26 games - one for each letter of the alphabet. And many games start with a different letter of the alphabet. Here are the games in ALPHABETICAL order.

P. AubirdForce - JackFrost2012
F. Balance of Power - johnjohnson
I. Civilization: Call to Power - Greenpanda
E. Dead Zone - JackFrost2012
G. Elevator Action - The Faceless Master
L. Flash Point - Argyle
Q. Gun Bullet - bobbyconover

D. Sword Dancer '93 - johnjohnson
J. Ultima Online - einhard
A. Vampire Hunter - anotheriori/The Faceless Master/ferricide
Z. Wizardry - JackFrost2012
M. Xanadu - JackFrost2012
V. Yaksa - Tellaerin

With these leftover:
H. Age of Empires - johnjohnson
K. D no Shokutaku - demi/ferricide
N. Final Fantasy - demi
O. The Screamer - gblues
R. Balloon Fight - The Faceless Master/anotheriori
S. Soldier of Fortune - ArcadeStickMonk
U. The Getaway - The Faceless Master
W. The Man I Love - JackFrost2012/gblues
Y. Angelus - JackFrost2012

The unused letters are: HIKNPQRZ. Possibly T, as well, tho "The Screamer" and "The Man I Love" count accordingly. Hrms. I don't think this is the right train of thought.

Ok so it looks like you guys got it all! I can't believe no one can see it still! Damnit!

Here's a slightly tweaked list for more perspective. :D

1. Vampire Hunter
2. Master of Monster
3. Murder Club
4. Sword Dancer

18. Balloon Fight
19. Soldier of Fortune
20. Last Mission
21. Get Away
22. Yaksa
23. The Man I Love
24. Ogre Battle
25. Angelous
26. Wizardry

I got it! All the games* are TOTALLY DUMB!

If the answer ends up being some multi-level marketing scheme I am going to HUNT YOU DOWN!

Okay, some questions, since we're not going anywhere:

1) is the order of the games important?
2) is the resolution of the screenshots important?
3) is some aspect of the game not present in the title (publisher, developer, etc.) key the connection?

*except Ogre Battle

Yes, no, no.

Ok fine. Since no one seems to know I guess no one will ever get it!

The games are all chapter titles in the Hellsing manga up to now in order. Before you stab me for extra-lameness, let me explain! :lol

I picked up volume 7 at Kinokuniya 2 days ago, and with each volume there were always a few mainstream titles used and a few really obscure titles used, but Vol7 had a chapter titles "The Man I Love" and I was thinking "there is NO WAY that is a game name", but lo and behold it WAS! Seeing how many of the titles were really obscure and ancient, I thought it would be fun to create a guess the game from a screenshot list from all the chapter titles since it would be pretty challenging. Turns out quite a few of the games look pretty damn cool too, even though no one has heard of them!

So there you have it, oh and read the manga, it FUCKING ROCKS HARDCORE! :D

Ok now I'm running before you guys kill me, hope you guys all had fun with the list though! :lol :lol :lol
