How freaking jarring is that the full cast is in some chapters and not in others
It's definitely a bit jarring, but I got used to it. I really like when they use that Darth Vader voice for the Baron lol. He sounds so intimidating. It's one of my favorite audiobooks.

The Dune universe is amazing. I read the Prequel books a few years ago. They would make a terrific movie series or extended tv series. I think they were set about 1000 years before the Dune novels and showed the war with the Cymeks - Humans that had replaced their bodies with robot shells and dominated worlds.
At least that movie is really on-point aesthetically. I was amazed by how good it held up visually when I first saw it last year. Really great production values. The mini-series is far more true to the source material, which I definitely appreciated, but it looked so damn cheap . . .

The book is a masterpiece, one of the best sci-fi stories ever.
Hated the 1984 movie, even though David Lynch is one of my top 3 favorite directors.
I'm curious to see what they are going do, but I wouldn't put a lot of faith in it.

Yes absolutely. Book #4, God Emperor of Dune, is probably my favorite. Book 1-4 are all excellent and they tell a contained chapter of the Dune universe that ends with book 4.
Iron Maiden have a song about it (they wanted to call it "Dune" but Herbert hated rock and metal so he didn't let them lol)
I mean you could argue that it deals with similar themes but it is a stretch to say it's about dune...

Well, it's arguable. The baroque aesthetic works well with the byzantine plot, but it goes a bit off the rails on the portrayal of certain characters and things. The Bene Gesserit, for instance, or the Sardaukar. I like the overall direction but it could be a little more grounded.
Did you know that Westwood Studios (masters of the cheesy live-action cutscenes from the late 90's and 2000's, of Command and Conquer fame) made Dune strategy games, and they used the visual cues from Lynch's movies for the live action custscenes?
It's absoultely amazing to see Michael Dorn (Worf) as Duke Achillus Atreides. His voice is fucking majestic:
Emperor: Battle for Dune cutscenes.
And John Rhys Davies as a Mentat to the Duke:
Dune 2000 cutscenes.
Miles Teg was the best thing about those later books. Such a great character.

Dune anime please. Would take too high of a budget to truly do it justice in live action. If live action then patrick stewert should reprise his role as gurney hallack from the lynch film. If anime norio wakamoto should voice baron harkonen or the emperor.

Casting: Baron Harkonnen, Gurney, Leto, Jessica, everyone except sting and even that had charm.
Sets. By god at the architecture.
Costumes: embarrassed the later tv version.
Music: prophecy theme and the rest of it hold up spectacularly.

Disagree with all of that, especially the piss awful 80s music.. Costumes were equally horrid with the miniseries, except the movie had an actual fucking budget so there's no excuse.

I don't think a tv series would have the budget to sufficiently handle Hyperion. You'd need a Lord of the Rings / Harry Potter amount of movie time.
To do it justice anyway.

I hate the movies interpretation of the weirdo get way.
A tough movie to make. Just to explain the universe without a ton of exposition is going to be hard. No computers, sword fighting controls the day (because of shields) and everyone needs dat spice to get around. Would need to stop the movies at God Emperor or write an entirely different future IMHO. Then again space whores taking over the universe with space sex might be perfect for a cable tv show...
And Miles Teg showing the entire universe how its done.
I did not like how Duncan became so important with his special penis that could counter the power of the space whores in the future.
I am some people loved the last two books but it got too weird for me.
It did and its sad we couldn't have Herbert finish it as weird as it got. It felt like it was building to something crazy but the pacing went out the window. I did enjoy a lot of the weirdness like bypassing computers for artificial modified creatures like the Chairdog.
I believe Dune is adaptable. Sure, there's a lot of subtext and weirdness, but at it's core it's a swashbuckling adventure in the desert. It's a bang-on hero's journey. There's ACTION and ROMANCE and BETRAYAL and REVENGE and PROPHECY. Hollywood is good at those things.

Yes! Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are good sequels, Children is definitely the better of the two, neither is as great as the original but they're still worth reading.
God Emperor of Dune is very different and it was difficult for me to get into it at the start but it was really worth it, it's such a great book, probably my favourite Dune novel.
Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune are great too, the focus shifts to the Bene Gesserit which made me very happy.
Avoid the sequels, prequels and interquels written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson like the plague, they are awful.

Sardaukar costumes were a huge miss, and they didn't really capture the scariness inferred in the book. These were meant to be terror inducing horror troops. But just about every other costume was god tier.

That was a great and intense moment. Book 5 and 6 is surely worth a read if one wants 'more' as long as one knows they're both practically standalone ("A Dune Story" spin-off if you will).

I just watched Jordorowsky's Dune this morning.
I've never watched or read anything else Dune-related, but I don't see how anything else can live up to that.
