Dungeons & Dragons Collection (Saturn)

Yeah, I'm familiar with the arcade games. I'm more curious about the Saturn versions. Gamespot's review seemed to make it out like a domestic release, not an import... Weird.

So it WAS released here?

I'll be damned if I can any place online that even tries to list is...

Edit - Ah well. So much for that. Thanks for answering the questions!

Two different games. The load times are atrocious, but, when I was sick, I sat and played this with my friend for hours on end. Just a great game.

No, this game was not released in America or Europe. The Game was released in Japan only. It uses a 4 meg cart, but you can use a Saturn 4 in 1 carts. that allows a person to play imports and use the 4 meg cart at the same time. the game does have load time and of course the text is in japanese.

Anyone else sort of prefer the first game? I never even played the second one until earlier this year, and I was sort of disappointed with it. I didn't play it all the way through, though.

I bought it a couple years ago because I thought it would be worth something. Its very average. Guardian Heros kicks the crap out of it.

One disk was for the first D&D game. The second disk was for D&D: shadow of Mystara. You got both games in the collection.
I guess that this is more of a question about the logistics of porting... unless I'm really mistaken, the arcade games, based on ROM sizes (I'm allowed to mention that, right?) wouldn't have even come close to taking up a single disc.

Woah woah woah. No way. The gameplay mechanics in the first are so broken in comparison. Spells and classes are much more refined with the second game. The only thing the first did better was the cleric voice.

"Power of Love!" -1st game

"Immodius Flavor!"??? -2nd game

The load times really just killed any fun these could deliver. One of the most dissapointing purchases I made that year, such a shame.

Tower of Doom does not make use of the 4-MB RAM cartridge, but Shadow over Mysteria does, correct? anyway, I understand the Saturn versions are almost arcade-perfect
(resolution difference, possibly a few frames missing) but have horrible load times. also, the Playstation1 version of the D&D Collection was canceled. too bad we're not likely to see these games in the forthcoming Capcom Classics Collection(s) for current consoles.

horrible load times and max of 2 players only. play it on MAME instead.

I bought the deluxe collection pack (comes with the 4MB RAM cart), played it once and never touched it again. (especially after MAME could emulate the game perfectly)

Not going to happen and why? Well at the time the production of the games, TSR wasn't part/become Wizards of the Coast. A few years ago Wizards bought out TSR(so I read) and all rights to D&D products went under them. As of now, only two publishers is entitled to developed, publish and distribute products relating to WoTC properties; those being Atari and SEGA(SEGA's rights only extend to the Japanese market)

"Power of Love!" -1st game

LOL, it's not "Power of Love!" it's "Power above!".

Anyways the collection is nice but the second game has pretty bad load times even though it's much better.

Actually, there never was a PS1 version. Tower of Doom was originally announced for both PS1 and Saturn in 1995 (and suppossedly finished on both) but it's release was halted for some reason. The Saturn version was reused for D&D Collection later on but D&D Collection was never announced for PS1, probably due to it's paltry 2MB of main RAM preventing any worthwhile porting of Shadow over Mystara.

There's actually 3 PSone games I can think of that were 100% completed but never released.

-Thrill Kill (Electronic Arts)
-Bubble Symphony (Xing)
-Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (Capcom)

Didn't Xing release Captain Cammando for the PS1, in Japan? I always wished they would have released that game for the Saturn. Has any one played the PS1, Captain Cammando? Jarrod, didn't Xing release Bubble Symphony for the Saturn?

The second game has some obvious strengths (a more elaborate weapons/magic system comes to mind), but I like the first for some more subtle reasons. I felt the character art, voice acting, and music meshed better in the first.

Yep. Xing released a bunch of 2D arcade games from Capcom, Taito, IREM and Data East on both Saturn and PlayStation. I've never played the PS1 port of Captain Commando myself though, just the CPS and SNES versions.

It's pricey, too. Goes for around Y7,000 and above in Akihabara.

ok so it was Tower of Doom that was announced for PS1, not D&D Collection. thanks Jarrod.

Thx for the list..

Wow, I had no idea Night Striker ever got a console release! If I'm remembering correctly, this is the Space Harrier-esque game with a futuristic theme right? Do you know the differences between the SS and PS1 versions, and are they good ports? I might have to track that down.

Also, Metal Black is great on Saturn, a very unique shmup that is. Doesn't get nearly enough love when discussing Saturn shmups. Ditto for Image Fight & X-Multiply .

You have the right game in mind. :) I only owned the PSX version, and it seemed arcade-perfect back in '96, but I have no idea if it really is or not. What I remember is that the game got an arranged sountrack to go with it that was much better than the original arcade BGM.

IIRC Nightstriker is actually a pretty rare game now.

It's quite possibly rare, but I still got it for 300 yen (or less?) in Aki during TGS '04. ^_^

It was for the only Night Striker otaku I know.

There was nothing really special about the either D&D's when you really compared them aside from the fact 2 new classes were added. Aside from that, both D&D's were alike as they both used the old D&D rule set(the one prior to 3.5)
