Act surprised, people!

I mean, even without the pandemic, E3 was in danger of existing. Why would video game companies do these events instead of a "direct" show works just as well if not more?

No costly booth and personnel budget to consider
No "E3 show" builds that devs have to crunch for the event
Better control of info from leaks, how they're delivered, etc.
Schedule is when company wants to air the show
Your game won't get lost amid the overload of info and media being pumped out all at the same time

...and loads more reasons.

The downside is, everyone and their mother will have a show. It's fun for some people, but overwhelming to most games media, I think. Like, you have to prepare for a show literally every week and it's usually on a weekend too. When it was just E3, I remember cramming so much work but it was usually at Day 0.

I vividly remember one E3 where i had to write like 36 articles in one day. I don't think I can do that anymore but I'm proud I was able to do that. :D

This show died when sony stopped showing up anyway.
I was fortunate enough to attend the last E3 when they were there: it was a blast and I’ll miss it but there’s really no way it could go on without any of the major publishers who’ve discovered they can host their own events at a fraction of the cost.

E3 is not needed anymore. E3 used to be one of the only places to make big announcements. That is not the case anymore. It was awesome when we needed it. I got super hyped for them. That said, I enjoy getting more individualized live streams of upcoming hardware or software from the companies directly. We seem to get a good stream of announcements through out the year. Much better than one blow out event with a few smaller ones coming in here and there.

They must have proposed some drastic changes for so many to pull out at the last minute. Also, it's still sort of amazing that with all that experience and name recognition they could not pull off a smaller event like Keighley.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
E3 hasn't mattered since 2000

Then... there was no more fun.
The TGS still has booth babes. Unironically my favorite floor show of the year.

E3 was a fun event in the past, not great, but a lot better than what's around now, it's a shame, the gaming industry no longer cares about gamer's now, just money, should of sided with gamestop etc 10 years ago and 2nd hand physical console games, and not the publishers saying they were taking money away from them and devs and they could make better games for the industry and make the industry better lol, they didn't, they just made it more expensive and to control it, and the games arn't better!.

Another sign that the industry has become more about its capital gains than love for the games.

Its not supposed to be this complicated. E3 was a cool event that we could look forward to that showcased and revealed new steps in the medium. Was supposed to be just fun.

E3 also held the devs and companies sort of accountable, they had to have SOMETHING. Looks like these days they know they are on bullshit and dont want to be held accountable for their lack of output. So e3 is a stress to them now.

I also think gamers are lying to themselves when they act like this is a positive lol like its better to have nothing.

Ive never seen an industry that hates its audience quite like the gaming industry. I get that we can be cunts at times, but at least we are better than the furries who attend comicon and the people who get drunk at ball games and beat the crap out of each other in front of kids. Every industry has to deal with its morons.

I wouldve loved to attend these conferences. Especially now that im older and can afford to buy a ticket to LA, get a hotel and attend E3. I loved watching E3 2014 in a theater with other nerds and that show sucked.
Starting to believe that companies and devs arent the same type of gaker that a common gaming enthusiast is. Theres too much of a disconnect these days; most of these execs and devs dont even play games like that.

No digital event has matched any of the fun or excitement of the conferences and convention style feel the live events have had and always feels like a poor man's Nintendo Direct. PS Experience also disappearing was a disappointment.

Loved E3. Even the bad ones, was a good time to go to a friend's house, grab a pizza and watch it together. Some amazing memories. Live shows with people on stage are still way more interesting to me than the pre-recorded shit. I'll miss it. Still don't know why some people are super ultra hype about E3 being bad, especially on some other forums on the internet.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
This is all Sony's fault.

Not even kidding.

They are the reason we are stuck with blog posts and tweets for all announcements now.

Soon as they pulled out it E3 immediately started to lose its relevance.

Covid didnt help either. 4 years after Sony decided they were too cool for E3, its officially DEAD.

Edit: Nintendo too. With their boring ass directs. Both these companies are to blame.
