e3 Predictions. MS vs. Sony vs. Ninty

Jeff-DSA said:
If Nintendo made a full commitment to online play and dragged all their franchises into the online arena that make sense, they would rock E3 to pieces.

Mabye for the diehard Nintendo crowd, but I think everyone else has moved on.

Nintendo will probably talk about specs a little and show some demo clips from the revolution which will be met with hoots and hollers from the crowd even if they don't know what the hell they're looking at. Hopefully they'll show something big beyond Zelda for the GC (mabye Mario 128). I doubt Zelda and a bunch of DS games will hold up against Sony and MS.

MS should (for their sake) have an incredible showing of software. I don't think they're going to blow their load on MTV; they'll show the hardware and talk about the 'message' of the 360 (HD era, global unity, world peace, whatever), but they'll save the big games for E3. With any luck people will be playing networked PDZ on the show floor along with a bunch of other launch games. I would expect to see some stunning video previews for games that are further out; the big RPGs from Japan, Gears of War, Shadowrun, some Rare stuff (new Banjo please with Conker gfx x20).

Sony will have a good show. Lots of PS2 games, tons of PSP games, and demos from newly unveiled PS3.

The "predictions" in this thread basically are this:

#1: Microsoft is the best
#2: Sony rules. PSP WILL TAKE OVER THE UNIVERSE.
#3: Nintendo won't show revolution, DS sucks, and they're screwed (again) this year.

The end.

I agree.

MS > SONY > Nintendo, like the 2 previous years

I think Nintendo's conference is going to be a crowd pleaser, because they will show off their online network via the DS and possibly show a new Super Mario game, which will be the Mario game that most people want (like the new Zelda is the one that most fans were clamouring for). Those are going to be big deals. I do think we'll see more Revolution than people think. Maybe not the controller itself but I could see other details.

Microsoft will kick E3 off with a bang ....

But Sony will be the one that finishes the strongest IMO.

I think they will display the PS3 is the stronger (considerably) hardware and they'll show off Gran Turismo, Insomniac FPS, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto Next, etc. trailers/demos, plus possibly a redesigned Dual Shock 3.

Also look for them to possibly have PS3 units on the show floor not only running games/trailers, but also Blu-Ray movies in high definition.

My off the wall prediction -- Resident Evil and Soul Calibur series' are Sony exclusive/premiere, replacing Devil May Cry and Tekken, which go multi.

The key for Sony is if they have the better hardware and a great looking FPS ... hype that to high hell, because they'll both strike the XBox 360 in the heart.

Prine:-
MS > SONY > Nintendo, like the 2 previous years

My arse.

Xbox has done well, but MS E3 showings have been to quot as Scots term - pish - frankly.

However, there are the obvious Nintendo fans assuming that Nintendo will erm.. show them what they want to see, hence Nintendo win..

MS need to have a decent E3 this year, because they have to get the publishers confidence and *keep* it... a bad E3 for Ms won't affect their launch but it sure as shit could destroy the 5-8 months after it IMO.

Sony will do as they've always done:-

'Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough'

Will either Ninty or MS? Remains to be seen.

No predictions from me,I think its going to be a fantastic show between Sony and Microsoft. PSP and 360 games everywhere followed by crazy annoucements from 1st and 3rd parties at the show. One thing I'm also looking forward to is the designs for the next gen. controls pads here, damn its going to be great show. But still,I'm not going to get too excited because I'll be let down. To me E3 is good fun, nothing more. But every year itsalways the same-it could always be better since it seems that these companies could always show/speak more about their products. And less video, more playable games.

The truth hurts doesn't it. :lol

Nintendo - I dont remeber anything apart from Zelda trailer from the past 2 e3s. 2003 was horrible (IGN pic sums it up) I remeber most magazines rating their show the worst

Sony - Only remeber PSP announcement (which rocked the industry) and the actual PSP unveiling the year after. I know EGM gave Sony B+ last year

MS - Halo2 playable demo shocked the gaming world in 2003, a year later they managed to get EA on Live which was huge (Burnout 3 running on networked Xboxs). EGM awarded MS B last year. Plus Muhammed Ali >>>> all

General concensus: Sony = MS > Nintendo

But MS showing off the next generation of XBL, finalised Xbox 360 design, its features and games i think its going to be hard for them not to come out on top. Sony will do well, lots of new PSP games from SquareEnix, Konami etc PS3 news and hopefully some new game demos. And Nintendo... I think the DS.. nobody really cares about (bar nintendo fans). Its all about Revolution, could be a killer show for them if they show off some of the games

when will you idiots realize i love Sony just as much as MS

Nintendo had the best show last year. They had Reggie come out, then they got the biggest cheers with Zelda and the DS presentation was great also.

It was definitely the funnest, with Sony's being the most boring, MS' being in between. That Jenny McCarthy skit was a laughably lame attempt to be cool.

If you're basing it on content, well then that's subjective, if you're a Nintendo fan you'll like the Nintendo show more because it has more of what you want to see, ditto for MS/Sony.

I think most would agree that Nintendo had the most "fun" show of the group. Their GDC conference this year was great too.

Prine -- I notice you're not telling what EGM scored Nintendo's show.

I think Sony is gonna win the Sony-MS pissing match simply because MS is going to make a big bruhaha, and then Sony is going to have a similar show, only with better hardware and probably better third party support.

If they can get a great looking FPS (Insomoniac) video trailer to show, that would be big for them, because the XBox relies so heavily on that genre.

Gran Turismo running on the PS3 is probably to knock people's socks off.

Threads like this make me hate video games. Well, vg messageboards, I should say. I hope all three have good showings because strong competition will likely make games better and cheaper to buy FOR ME. The end.

:lol :lol :lol

It got the biggest cheers becuase it was full of Nbots. This was proved by the crowd crying after the zelda trailer. Reggie is a joke, only celebrated by nbots. Argh god, then there was Miyamoto and his sword... WTF!

If they can get a great looking RPG (Mistwalker) video trailer to show, that would be big for them, because the XBox has traditionally been weak on that genre.

Xbox 360 is going to knock people's socks off!

I believe even EGM said Nintendo had the best show, and they're hardly pro-Nintendo.

But this year is going to be PS3 taking the limelight. I think people will be surprised that Sony is not going to phone it in, they will attack MS and let them know, "if you want our crown, you're going to have to work for it".

If I'm a Sony rep, I do *everything* to make the XBox 360 look like a "rush job" to the market, like the Dreamcast. The PS3 you position as the "real" next-generation platform with real next-generation specs and real next-generation HD format (Blu-Ray). That's going to be a strong angle for Sony to play.

The more doubt you can cast, the better.

So Reggie coming out and very loudly lieing out of his ass is how a show is won. Then I suppose Nintendo did win. Now if winning is based off of substance then it is a totally different story.

The other thing is Halo, undoubtedly is MS' trump card, but the FPS genre traidtionally is not a loyal one.

If there's a better FPS by someone else, people will move on.

DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, Unreal, GoldenEye, Half-Life, Halo ... etc. if Sony can get themselves a great looking/great playing FPS, they could capture a large portion of the Halo fanbase IMO.

FPS fans are fickle, they're like little girls who like a new boy band every month.

There isn't hardcore loyalty to any FPS series, people will switch to something else.

It wont take much from Nintendo to convince their fans that they won the show this year. I am a nintendo fan, but it would take a lot to impress me this year. Last year was just special, because most people werent expecting anything from Nintendo. But out strolls Reggie, being all big and bad. But what stole the whole show was the Zelda trailer. It was just completely unexpected and that is what made it special. No build up to it, no prerelease hype, just a simple "here, you should see this" then the fanboy collective went apeshit. Even the people who have left the nintendo fan group were happy about Zelda.

But this year, I think MS will come tough. They need to for the 360 launch hype to keep building.

But I agree with others. A solid showing from all three would be best.

"Substance" is subjective. If you're a Sony fan you'll like Sony's show better no matter what, ditto if you're an XBot, or a Nfan generally anyway.

I think most of the press even stated that Nintendo had the best show, so they're probably a better barometer since sources like EGM are hardly pro-Nintendo.

All three will have great software to show that's not even a question.

I am a nintendo fanboy, but I'm pretty sure EVERYONE was splooging over Zelda, not just N-bots. You do know that E3 is a press event, and that there were people from EGM, Gamespot, IGN, and mainstream press members from CNN and other organizations, right?

A lot of the press members don't choose whose conference they go to, but are assigned to it by their employers.

Who didn't get a kick out of Miyamoto's sword swinging, especially when the sound guy didn't play the "CHING!" sound effect and Miyamoto pointed at him? :lol

and regardless of the image of the DS on gaf at the moment, people were HYPED about it last E3. The demos were fun and showed off its abilities well(where the hell is my submarine game?!), and the whole unveiling of the DS, with the developer videos and stuff, was well-done. Hell, I have the chat log of #ga (Thanks Santa) from the press conference, and people are going "WOW I'M GETTING A DS" and "PSP is DONE FOR" all over the place.

The reaction to Nintendo last E3 was VERY good from the majority of sources and E3 attendees, not just the Nbots like myself.

Same here. People need to sit back and think before spewing such bullshit with their keyboards across these message boards. I'm excited for the show, the new generation is coming,I'm glad I've got my IGN Insider account renewed, now its time to let the fire works begin.

I think Nintendo's conferences are better because they're not so friggin' corporate.

There's a bit of a fun attitude to it.

Sony's traidtionally have been sleep inducing slide shows (this will change this year though I think) with a lot of graphs.

MS tries a bit too hard with the stupid celebrity stuff, plus they have issues keeping their mouth shut about things so by the time E3 comes around they usually don't have many surprises -- we'll have a good look at the XBox 360 before their E3 press conference even begins. The MTV unveiling is cool, but what I think it will do, is make the anticipation for Sony and Nintendo's conferences much bigger because now everyone will want to know what Sony/Nintendo have in store.

Even GDC this year -- GDC is traditionally a bore beyond belief, but Nintendo's conference was fun. Iwata's speech was funny and light hearted and had the crowd of mostly jaded game developers laughing.

No? Thats why Reggie jumped on stage talking about momentum for 30 minutes, then you have iwata bangin on about how I'm not satisfied with current gaming (fuck you iwata), Zelda trailer was great i agree

They had a good show, sweet Jeebus, some of you guys have a Type S controller suck right up your ass before you can even acknowledge Nintendo did something good.

Even EGM said they were great and they've been pretty hard on Nintendo lately.

They got a great response at GDC as well just a few weeks ago.

Well IGN started as a Nintendo site and is still very much a Nintendo site at heart when it comes to games. As for everyone splooging. Nope the only mainstream multiconsole site that said Nintendo was best was EGM. Other than Nintendo fans Reggie was laughed at because of the "Momentum" speech was so much utter BS. At the them the GCN was falling deeper and deeper into 3rd place. And If I remember correctly just a couple of days after the event the NPD sales came out and the GCN was under 100K sold for the month.

ms should do well -- they're presumably farthest along on their next-gen entry, and next-gen consoles are always impressive. i'm really curious to see how their lineup takes shape, particularly some of the collaborations with japanese developers. dunno how much we'll see of ps3, but if ps2 was any indication, there'll be some preposterously huge numbers and possibly some show-stealing demos. psp will look really good in comparison to ds. as it always has. but this will be even more pronounced with both machines all over the show floor. i expect nintendo to be reticent and enigmatic on the subject of revolution. which should at least forestall the perplexity and disappointment that will greet its eventual unveiling.

What the hell does E3 and NPD sales for May have to do with anything? :lol

Just about every press organization had a positive reaction to Nintendo's press event, not just EGM.

Why doesn't MS get their ass grilled every year over their 100 million XBox sales target?

The thing is (and this might be hard for some to swallow), but guess what -- just about EVERYONE likes Zelda, not just Nintendo fans.

Even most of the most jaded gaming press journalists grew up with an NES, having Zelda up there was a big deal not just to Nintendo fans.

actually, i can see some parallels to e3 '99, where sega had an impressive early dreamcast lineup, sony had ps2 demos and a strong last wave of ps1 games, and nintendo was still trying to push an obviously foundering n64. microsoft slots in for sega, however superficially. though maybe i'm getting my e3s mixed up.

Ah, everyone bickering and arguing back and forth, just like true fanboys:)

Me, I like all three companies and consoles, and want a tight race this new gen. I want a repeat of the SNES/Genesis days because all the companies will be trying to outdo each other and the gamer wins the most in the end.

The "momentum" comments came from primarily George Harrison, not Reggie. And yeah, they were clearly damage control. It'll be interesting to see how they spin things this year, and I'm guessing they'll focus a lot on the DS hardware sales to put a positive outlook on things.

How completely boring of you.
May be boring of me, but in my opinion its the best way to game. Be an equal opportunity gamer, that way I am not depriving myself of good games because of silly blind devotion to only one company.:) Being an every-console man allows me to play whatever I like.

The only downside to it is being broke from buying all the consoles and games for them. But that is the price of entertainment.

Amen to that. When you don't know if you should laugh or cry at a thread, you know it's bad news.

I just hope that Reggie guy gives us another year's worth of quotes to make Nintendo look stupid. Nothing will ever beat "kick ass and take names" and "momentum," though.

So Reggie coming out and very loudly lieing out of his ass is how a show is won.

:lol :lol It's funny, because it's true! All Nbots rave about Reggie "kicking ass and taking names": "YES! NINT3NDO IS GETTING ITS ACT TO GETHA!"

:::1 year later::: "NOTHING NEW FROM NINT3NDO. SAME OLE SAME OLE."

An Xbox 2 hardware showing that didn't dissapoint with actual playable games will steal the show with ease. But I'm sure Nintendo and Sony won't be far behind with their own next gen hardware demos and teasers. It's all about next gen now.

Microsoft will win over graphic whores who cant wait for next gen pretty graphics. Its the dreamcast 2.

Sony and Nintendo will distract from Xbox 360 by showing great games coming for current gen consoles and new handhelds as well as promising superior tech over Xbox 360 in the next year.

In the end the winner will be Sony. The PS3 having the power edge over the Xbox 360 will create a repeat of the "wait for the new playstation" situation that dashed dreamcasts chances of long term success.

prediction : lots of sony fanboys trying to convince themselves that the demos they see on the PS3 are loads better looking than the games on the Xbox 360.
