E3: Why so bitchy?

Seems like everybody has an axe to grind re: E3.

The good outweighs the bad for me, a LOT.

Good:
MS: Xbox 360 details and games, some of which look amazing
Sony: Far more PS3 info than I was expecting, and I like most everything I hear about it
Nintendo: Not so much, but they said there wasn't goign to be a lot. GBA Micro looks cool

Bad:

PD0 looks like crap. That's one game.

The PS3 controller is looks hella goofy. Not a lot of PSP software. Nothing playable for PS3, but most people didn't think we'd even see more than specs and a tech demo at most.

Not much Cube software for the rest of the year.

So why is everyone grousing so much? The general lack of new, previously-unannounced games?

Good (for me):

- Plenty of interesting games on current consoles either announced or shown/expanded upon
- A next-gen future that isn't causing me stress by making me want more consoles and thereby thinking about the cash outlay involved
- MGS3:S

Bad:

- Lack of new material for PSP

I came into this year's show with zero expectations (aside from Koei's PS2/Xbox game announcement and the Capcom Classics pack) and I've come out pleased (aside from Koei's PS2/Xbox game announcement and the Capcom Classics pack). Next-gen stuff is completely irrelevant to me because there's already too much I want to play on current systems, so I don't really care about how underwhelming the announcements might have been for some. I don't understand all the hyperventilating and obsession over the next gen when there are good games to be discussed coming out within the year for current consoles.

I don't really care about hardware, I already know the PS3 and Xbox360 are going to be powerful. I just want to see some games. Sony didn't have any playable demos and the ones Microsoft did show are uninspired and running at a crappy framerate. The only highlights from this year's show for me was Zelda:TP, MGS3:S, and the hilarious MGS4 trailer.

I was extremely pleased to hear about the release of a beatmania game over here. That was probably the best news for me. The graphics are nice for the new consoles but I really want to see some innovation, so far it just looks like a ton of first person shooters with nice graphics.

How so? Lack of killer games? Cuz as a hardware show, it's been great.

Microsoft had to stand on stage and lie about their hardware being the most powerful, not to mention that for a console less than half a year away, why were we seeing so many games running off alpha kits at decreasing levels of power? ("40%! Wait, no, 35%! Wait! 25%! Yes, that's it!")

Sony showed some nice hardware, but save for a few tech demos, the really impressive stuff existed as prerendered estimations of capabilities. We were looking at a lot of pretty guesses and detail work we might not see for years in actual game releases.

And Nintendo? On their hardware front, they confirmed some nice features and size, but between Miyamoto and Perrin, they've let it known that they're building a budget box, not something to match capabilities with even the Xbox 360. They didn't even have _ESTIMATIONS_ to show us, and Miyamoto let it slip that they don't have dev kits out yet, have no idea when they will, and have only talked to a few third parties about it, anyway. Their other hardware was the GB Micro, which was just, "Hey, buy the GBA again! Or tell someone who didn't buy it before to buy it now!"

So as a hardware show, yes, from the viewpoint of, say, a year ago, it independently looks great, but from a relational viewpoint now, it didn't hold up as well as it was hoped.

Mostly it's been shitty because:

-Microsoft let the cat out of the bag with 360, through various leaks and the MTV craptacular.
-Sony wowed people with incredible tech demos yet failed to produce anything of real substance on the showfloor.
-Nintendo, once again, lets people seriously down with Revolution. In fact, they produced the same conference as last year - with the GB Micro and a physical design for Revolution added for effect.

The biggest problem has mostly been:

People knew what they were going to see at E3 in advance.

For me, the only good things from this E3 were the PS3 info, RE4 for PS2 and SF Alpha 3 for PSP.

And the comedic value of the MS and Nintendo press conferences.

I've just been over to ds.ign.com and realised where a good deal of Nintendo's attention is going.

Downloaded videos of Mario Kart, New Mario Bros, Tony Hawks (just clip played at conference), Viewtiful Joe and I've got more to go. I've been impressed by that list of online games from other companies - I naturally love the sounds of MK and AC online, and I specifically love Winning Eleven and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles being two of the games on said list. Puzzle Bobble and a Boy and His Blob look great and there are many more games I like the sound of, but have yet to see.

Rememebring last gen, this is no different. The first games demoed of a new gen are always generic titles like FPSes and racers.

I guess I'm happy becuase we saw more of the PS3 than I expected, and not having seen the MTV special, I was happy to see the 360 footage. And I think the dowload faeture of the Revolution is very cool (if done right).

I am disappointed in the lack of PSP stuff, though, since that's where I am doing most of my gaming right now. :(

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with all the titles coming out for the DS. It's getting a lot of support.

E3 "sucked" because essentially very little NEW was shown for current gen, little to nothing shown for PSP, Revolution's biggest feature is downloading/rebuying old N games via emulation and there are alot of MS haters who were not gonng like 360 regardless.

In short the gamers have lost excitement for the current gen and have along wait for PS3 if they pass on 360.

Oh yah, and the entry price of next-gen might be $100+ higher.

I think you've nailed it!

As somebody getting increasingly interested in MS, and as a Sony fan, I guess I won the most! Hence my non-bitchiness.

Now for those PSP titles....
