If Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst and CFO Warren Jensen have a crystal ball, they aren't telling the analysts where they keep it. But, ball or no, the pair freely prognosticated in today's earnings call, held shortly after the US markets closed.

A couple of interesting comments flowed from the two gentlemen today on the longevity of top-tier titles' $50 price tag (it's not going away), premium pricing for PSP software (start rubbing those $20s together), and even higher prices for next-gen games.

As is typical with earnings calls, the presenters started out with one theory, but when pressed, ended with another. For instance, Probst prepped listeners for the some good news by saying prices are coming down. "Overall pricing will trend downward over time," he said. "It's just going to happen."

But Probst's mantra of lower prices began to falter when pressed by additional analyst questions. "My comment would be that premium products will continue to command premium prices, so I would not expect a huge difference [in prices for calendar year '05]," said Probst, shifting slightly from his earlier comments. "If you take a look at the average selling price in the top 20 in calendar '05, compared to what it was in calendar '04…in fact, if you trend it over the last three or four years, that average selling price in the top 20 has been somewhere between $45 and $50. I would not expect a huge variance from that in '05."

But when the subject turned to pricing for nex-gen console games, Probst acknowledged price hikes are likely. "It would not surprise me to see selected titles carry a higher price point on new generation consoles, at least initially." (Emphasis added.)

On the topic of next-gen consoles, Probst was hopeful Microsoft would not cease production of the current Xbox console as it ramps up to manufacture Xbox 2 console (as some have speculated). He also made some modest predictions for who would be first to market with their new platform, Sony or Microsoft.

"I would not expect Sony to have a head start on the next generation of hardware console systems," Probst said. In fact, Probst laid out a scenario where the PlayStation 3 might not make it stateside until late 2006. "[It] remains to be seen whether there will be new console launches from either Microsoft or Sony [in calendar year '05] and probably impossible to predict whether it's early or late '06 for PlayStation 3…it might turn out that PlayStation 3 is launched earlier in Japan than it is in North America and Europe."

Overall, the execs were mum on specifics on the launch of Sony and Microsoft's new consoles. "With regard to when those systems are going to launch, you will have to speak with them," Probst said, but overall, Probst expects a much tighter race between the two leading console makers."With regard to market share…I would predict that the two companies are closer in market share than they were in this cycle." He did not make any mention of Nintendo's next-generation console, code-named "Revolution."

Luckily I couldn't care less about EA games (except the Burnout ans SSX series, but I can live without them).

I think Nintendo is still tight lipped about Revolution, that's why no one mentions it.

Anyway, I am glad E3 is here soon. I can't wait to put an end to all these speculation topics and finally see what's next gen is about.

I'd expect a breakdown something like this next gen ...

PS3 - 75 million
Xenon - 45 million
Revolution - 25 million

Next generation in terms of userbase with PS3/Xenon being very close in North America and Sony having a reasonable lead in Europe and a huge lead in Japan, obviously.

If EA raises the price of Madden 2006 to $55 or $60, really who's gonna stop them?

Well it wouldn't be a full year. It'd probably be more like 9 months.

I could see Xenon launching in late November this year, but Sony may speed up the PS3's arrival in North America to say August 2006, which is fine because that's when Madden NFL releases anyway and is close enough to the seasonal fall shopping season (SNES also launched in August).

I think PS3 will launch in Japan in March/April 2006, followed quickly by a August/Sept. 2006 launch in the US, and Oct/November for Europe.

I think Kutaragi will push Sony to let him ramp up the PS3 spec-wise though. I just can't see Sony coming to the market late and then having only an "on par with Xenon" type of chipset.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo-EA have privately already set up a deal.

Maybe some kind of pact that allows EA to use Nintendo characters/bonuses in future EA games, and maybe in turn Nintendo will push them to make more specific kinds of versions of their games for Revolution (depending on how different it really is I guess).

I could see a deal like that. EA really could just set aside a seperate team to handle Nintendo stuff.

Western publishers/developers don't mention it because Nintendo is becoming less and less relevent to the market.

I love their games, and will hopefully play them until the day I die, but the bottom line is they are becoming marginalized.

(The usual disclaimer: past performance does not predict future performance, Rev could still be awesome and change everyone's mind, etc...)

I consider myself to be a hardcore gamer and Madden fan for more than 15 years and this is the first time I'm gonna say this, I'm getting kinda rather really sick of EA, they're becoming the spokesperson for the gaming industry now? 90% of their games either suck or are just average. Even though I respect the fact that they've become so successful (even though that's been done mostly by buying out properties and cheating uninformed gamers into buying shitty games by brand appeal) I don't think they have any right to speak for the industry, it's not like they have helped it grow, in fact if it grew they're probably the ones less responsible for it. If noone steps in a reign ending PlayStation fashion(one can dream) and does a serious good job, in no time the games industry will basically be them. And that means, half assed games all over the place.

You think the Revolution is going to tie the Cube's final userbase number? :lol

EA buys Nintendo and releases the EA Revolution in 2006!!!

My worthless prediction. Using my psychic powers:

PS3 - 110 million
Xenon - 30 million
Revolution - 20 million

No way in hiznell Xbox 2 gets 45 million install userbase without having a decent presence in Japan.

Raise prices 3rd party publishers and see your unit sales GO DOWN. HA HA HA.

.

not if xenon is easier and cheaper to dev for. US and UK will make up the difference even moreso next gen than this one. remember ps2 had 1 year+ head start.

You know Microsoft might want to release Xenon in Japan first. I mean it's not like they're going to hurt Xbox sales :lol and it's a cheap way to build hype for N.America and Europe since hell they're going to have to launch in Japan anyway.

Plus the PS2 is getting long in the tooth even in Japan. They'll get some curiosity sales before the PS3 hype really starts rollin rollin rollin rollin rollin

Interesting thought... and considering Xbox's popularity in Japan, it's not like they'd have to divert more than a few percent of their US holiday launch supply.
