EA DICE withdrew nearly every official server from BF3 (PS360)

Console gamers are reporting that the official DICE servers for Battlefield 3 multiplayer have been completely withdrawn, with the game now largely playable only on private rented servers.

Publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE recently made the bold move of introducing a server-rental scheme to console versions of Battlefield 3. At $30 for 30 days, these servers don’t come cheap, but this hasn’t stopped the Battlefield community from signing up in droves.

Initially there were plenty of official DICE and EA servers running concurrently with the new private servers. Over the past week, however, console players have noticed the official servers disappearing, to the point where DICE-managed servers are no longer visible on either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

Lock if old.

From my experience on PS3, this is true. What were official servers are now all being rented out. I think the Popularity of the server rentals was higher than they expected, and as a result have chosen to take the dollar instead of offering the standard BF3 affair.

What the fuck

Now you don't want to spend money on servers for one of your most recent FPS releases anymore? Like seriously?

This is why I never ever play EA games online. Though I do wish more companies allowed you to host dedicated servers for consoles on PC's(not like this however).

Sorry, I'm not really familiar with how this works, but does that mean the multiplayer is unplayable unless you buy into a private server?

That is fucking ridiculous.

I paid to play the game online (alongside an Xbox Live fee for some people), and now you're telling me the community is going to survive based on others deciding to pay yet further fees?

Eurgh.

99% of the servers are open to anyone. It's not like this results in people not getting a game, just that the rules of the game are open to whoever rented the server.

Server costs for EA have to be almost nothing seeing how Blizzard don't even list server costs on their quarterly budget statements due to how low they are.

How much do nice dedicated servers cost to maintain?

In general, I mean, not from a BF3 user standpoint.

What? They just almost killed the online component of one of their most played properties? Which is based on online play?

What?

Pfft game is old, probably like 5 people playing it or something lol. Makes good business sense for EA to shut it down. Maybe get those servers ready for MoH which is going to have a massive push in the fall.

This can't be right - BF3 shipped truckloads, I can't imagine that they'd pull a stunt like this and force everyone to rent servers. Surely that'd cause a bottleneck and end up making them less money?

Isn't this pretty much the same situation as it is on PC? I don't notice a lot of official EA servers around. It seems logical that as the community starts hosting its own servers the need for official ones disappears. Besides, this might actually make EA keep the game alive longer without turning off the servers.

Bunch of the guys I know that play this online have noticed this, but have said there are a lot of official servers still there but they are empty and you have to search for them. Which brings up another interesting point of EA prioritizing rented servers for matchmaking instead of using official servers.

EA...keep it classy.

I don't think I'm properly understanding the article.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

It isn't possible to play console editions of BF3 online anymore unless you/a friend rent a private server for $30/month.

Is that right? That can't be right.

Any yet 360 and PS3 got that huge tournament and PC got crap. Also didnt B2K come out first for ps3?? I guess they learned the hard way.... we are the master race for a reason.

That's crazy, if they are charging $1/day for others to rent servers imagine how little it must cost them hosting their own.. Cheap asses

edit: For people that don't know, most PC games don't have first party multilayer servers either, but unlike this they don't exclusively sell the ability for rent one, anyone with a physical server can set one up on their own for free.

SMOKE WEED 420 METRO CQ 500% 24/7 is basically what I seem to find every time I browsed servers. Its difficult to find a well-populated B2K map from my experience as well. I can only imagine how shitty and fractured this game is going to become when the map packs start rolling out.

You can't setup your own Dedicated server??? You can only rent one??

Also, dick move.

EDIT - Why do weed smokers get hate?

Other people are renting the servers and you can play on them. For the vast majority of players, the only difference is the rulesets in each server, although it opens the door for admin abuse (kicking out players for no reason).

Uhh no dude, you can play on rented servers unless they are pw protected I would assume.

But if all these players stop hosting/renting servers, will EA still keep the normal servers up? LOL
