OK, this thread is the place to freely discuss all of your speculation/thoughts/etc. about the EA NFL licensing monopoly. If you start another thread on this topic with a "fact" in the title and no definitive source, your thread will be locked and you will be BANNED. Be warned that I'm quite sick of threads with misleading titles.

With all that being said...here are some questions to get you started:

Will the price go up or down because of the cost of the deal and the monopoly on the league property?

Will there be a consumer backlash, or will people buy anything with "NFL" on it, regardless of the backstory?

Will the game have technical improvements, or will EA have an excuse to "slack off?"

What will the other football game developers do for next year?

Does this deal set any kind of legal precedent, and what actions might the other interested parties take in a courtroom?

What other online features will now be offered?

Does this mean that the featured player on the box cover will suffer an even GREATER curse? Maybe, instead of just having a shitty year, he'll actually DIE now.

They'll fix the DB's play for the next 5 years and sell it at $70. And by fix, I mean just change from triangle, to circle, to r1, to select, to triangle for the pick and put it in big bold letters on the back of the case. "NEW DEFENSIVE CONTROLS".

Well, if you cant beat them...you buy them!

This is total bs as far as I am concerned. Looks like I may have to go back and boycot ea games. The deal with the nfl is just wrong. I will be sending the nfl offices an email as well.

If this were MS, lawsuits would already be hitting the fan. EA needs to get sued for this. And, they need to get sued for their unlawful labor practices.

Hopefully the NFL Players Association will speak up on this.

<Yorke> But ESPN > NHL.
<Willco> ESPN MUTANT FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
<Willco> But there's no fucking NHL exclusivity?
<Willco> Why are you going on about something that has never happened.
<Willco> And probably never will.
<Hybrid-Homer> Yorke, NHL 2k6 will happen... dont fucking worry
<Willco> MLB and NBA fans have a lot more to worry about than frickin' hockey fans.
<Hybrid-Homer> yes

<Yorke> If there's no more ESPN NFL, just substract one of the other two franchises, and NHL is gone because VC will just close the sports department.
<Hybrid-Homer> they wont fucking close the sports departmant
<Hybrid-Homer> and if they do they wont until 2006 anyway
<Shinobi_EA> :O

...............

<GaimeGuy> I wonder how expensive EA will make madden next year
<GaimeGuy> 60?
<GaimeGuy> 70?
<Bishman> THEY GOT NHL TOO?

..............

<Willco> YES
<Willco> THEY GOT THE NHL.
<Willco> I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH TED LEONIS AND HE SAID THEY ARE DISCUSSING IT RIGHT NOW.
<MiG> MADDEN:CE!
<MiG> 60 bucks!

Speculation? Rumour? Prescience?

so not only has EA bought exclusivity from the NFL, now they have it from parker bros to make monopoly? those insidious bastards!

"Will there be a consumer backlash, or will people buy anything with "NFL" on it, regardless of the backstory?"

Madden is a huge game with casual gamers. They won't pay any attention to this and keep buying it every year.

EA SIGNS AN ALL-NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH JESUS, GOD TO HOLD EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO HEAVEN

Mon Dec 13, 2004 07:36 PM ET
LOS ANGELES, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Just hours after signing a record setting deal with the NFL and Player's Inc., video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. also announced that it had negotiated separate deals with Jesus and God for the sole rights to heaven. The five-year exclusivity deal with Jesus allows EA to maintain control of admittance into the pearly gates, while the ten-year contract with God gives EA majority shareholder status of heaven.

"We've faced a lot of heavy competition in the video game industry this year," said EA chief executive Larry Probst, "But this deal allows us to penetrate a market of billions of Christians, especially those in the 'Red States', and their faith-installed subscription base."

The licensing agreement is an exclusive for not only heaven, but most of space, which includes the highly lucrative Mars, and may be a potential goldmine for EA.

"If there is indeed life on Mars," said Probst, "We know they will want copies of Madden."

EA just bought the moon... all you folks who live out in the country? You're f*cked.

Actually this will work in the casuals favor as the average person who only owns a console for Madden will see that their game is so good that no one is competing against it.

Take-Two said the Sega NFL game was not a "material contributor" to its profits, but nonetheless it condemned the exclusive NFL/EA deal.

"We believe that the decisions of the National Football League and Players Inc. to grant an exclusive license for video games do a tremendous disservice to the consumers and sports fans, whose funds ultimately support the NFL, by limiting their choices, curbing creativity and almost certainly leading to higher game prices," Take-Two said in a statement.

I hope someone fuxx0rs up EA's gold master copies right before it goes into full production, so they'd have to do a massive recall because no discs work... then they issue another gold master and someone fuxx0rs that up too. Oh man that would be gold.

Is it confirmed EA has NHL too?

Yeah, this is definitely confirmed. As soon as the owner's and the player's union reach a compromise, part of their mutual agreement is to grant exclusivity rights to EA.

EA sees ESPN as a huge threat to them in hockey, since hockey fans had stated in surveys that Sega produces a superior product and that their solid hockey titles factor into their other sports purchases.

And is there a price confirmed?

I know a secretary that saw a memo stating $64.99 with an additional $9.99 per month subscription fee for online play.

Japanese game companies like Konami, Namco and Square Enix should form an alliance to counter EA. or maybe Nintendo with some others.

EA is a huge threat to the well-being of the industry we love.

EA will milk this license.

Madden NFL 2006
NFL Street 2006
NFL Management 2006 (mentioned in the IGN article)
Batman NFL Returns
Need for NFL Speed Underground Rivals
The Lord of the NFL Rings

This just further validates my opinion of EA being the equivalent of the Borg. You don't even have to be a football fan to see that this is bullshit. This is competition of the worst kind.

"Mr. Worf, inform Iwata. The alliance is about to be assimilated into EA."

OK, so Madden goes up to 65-70 and sells as the same it always does on XBox and PS2 - the GC stil ldoesn't sell - so there it will become cheapest on GC. More casual fans buy a GC for the cheapest Madden. GC sales spurt, Nintendo wins this generation. LOL

I just found this story on ESPN.COM! I was wondering why we had that thread about prices going up!

Jeezo! This was rumored a few months ago but who woulda thunk it!

SEGA/Take Two is bound to sue! They gotta!

Other points I need to make:

--- how are this year's NHL games gonna be made/updated without a new hockey season this year?

--- Next step......EA buys WWE license!

FUCK I HATE EA.

At least when MS buy gaming companies, they let them do their own thing. Not buy them, suck them dry then shut them down.

Anyway this was a good place to vent.

I don't know how they could sue, unless they already had their own exclusivity deal in place, which they obviously don't.

Imagine the kid that's gotta code Mario into this game!

Am I wrong or is this the first time ever EA and Nintendo has worked together?

Nintendo's got to have their programmers overseeing operations doncha think?

Bishop??

Well they announced last year that the 2 companies were working together on ideas to advance connectivity, with Shigeru Miyamoto giving his input on gameplay elements. So Mario likely grew out of that announcement.

I believe your looking for the NBA Street thread. This is the 'we hate EA' thread. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200.

EA reminds of Square back in the psx days, that is, before The Spirits Within.

Anyway, if EA ever made a game console, they'd hav the American game market right in the palm of their hands.

You know, even if EA bought the NHL license, I'd still stick with ESPN. While the debate rages between Madden and ESPN fans over which titles plays better, on the hockey side it's the biggest mismatch since Warrior vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley - EA's hockey game sucks copious amounts of ass.

EA has done this before. Sega came out with the dreamcast and NFL2k and EA saw that game as a threat to their best selling title. So they decided to not support the dreamcast and they ran the dreamcast into the ground. Now finally Sega has got to the point where they were ready to pounce on Madden and EA pulls the rug out from under them. It's too bad I've liked the NFL/ESPN series more than Madden.

If EA ever bought the NHL license...I swear by God's name I'd buy out half the board ads in GM Place and place theirin a whole bunch of "EA SUCKS" logos.

With the help of your donations of course. I'll need some of those donations when I get sued too. :P

Oh yeah, and I literally ROFLed when I read this:
Does this mean that the featured player on the box cover will suffer an even GREATER curse? Maybe, instead of just having a shitty year, he'll actually DIE now.

Heheh, still cracks me up.

Plus, I wonder if the consumer backlash would ever get militant. A small crowd outside of EA HQ in Canada would get some attention by the media up here in Canada (because nothing interesting happens up here). I know I would do that if they bought the NHL license. Along with the GM Place ad thingy.

2006: after the financial windfall of Madden 06 (59.99reg 69.99 special) EA has announced that it plans to purcahase the NFL entirely.

Seriously though, this has potential ramifications on price, as well as online fees, don't think EA will feel as much pressure to make their NFL game go online without a fee when there is no other game in town. I wouldn't even be surprised if there was vanilla online for free and on xbox live while there was a premium online service that they charged for.
