Guys,

I have been going to the various fan sites reading the reactions to this news. I have been making basically the same post to all the forums. The main thing I have been saying is not to worry about the game quality going down hill.

The crew at Tiburon are just as dedicated to making the best football game possible.

EA didn't do this a reaction to Sega or any other developer. The NFL and Player's Association went to several different developers wanting to ink an exclusive deal. We have an excellent relationship with these two groups (e.g. 15 years of making Madden) and they went with us.

Both the NFL and the Player's Association are expecting a lot from us as well. Innovation and game play will not suffer.

EA, those evil bastards!

It's nice to know that an EA Sports Producer won't openly admit in a public statement probably written by a PR Rep to the game getting even staler than it was before; that's really great news.

Slightly Off-Topic: But what will Visual Concepts do now? Their football games were their bread and butter, will they all be without jobs soon? Will EA hire them for the Madden team? And what of the "ESPN" license that they have?? Would it even be any good if they decided to release next years game with no NFL licensing??

I'm dumbfounded that EA would take such drastic measures as this. It obviously shows they were feeling the heat from Sega. It's really sad that it's come done to this though.

I can almost hear the paper he's reading from rattling...

[rattle-fumble-rattle]........"Innovation and game play will not suffer."

I suggested to a friend that Visual Concepts should develop a football game based on the Mutant League series :P

It is unfortunate to see Tiburon get beat up since they get swept into this shitstorm. However, I really do think reviewers need to judge Madden games on a higher level than other football games from now on. If EA wants to buy their way to the top, that's fine. But now they need to back it up with a game of higher calibur in every faucet. No miscues at all, NONE. And the online leagues better not be shit again!

what the fuck does EA know about innovation ?

their whole business Concept is against innovation and yet they have the audacity to bring it up!

fuck you EA.

i for one actually HOPE ea charges a fee for online leagues/franchises, because it is clear to me that they wont step up to the plate if the leagues are free. i dont mind paying an extra 20 bucks a year or whatever for complete online franchises with all the bells and whistles, and i'm sure most of the true sports fans here don't either. if EA actually charges, there is no excuses for shitty leagues (like this year)

ESPN NBA 2KX is also popular. Sold over 800,000 on both systems combined so far.

IAWTP. I was actually thinking how it's likely that Madden would get reviewed more critically from now on because of this. It seems that 2K and Madden both kind of got free passes in the past, with maybe 10% of the reviewers pointing out the very apparent flaws in each of those titles and everyone seemingly slapping the old 9.5 on 'em before even playing. Not only that but neither title has ever gotten seriously knocked for lack of innovation other than from fans. This will likely change now, since there's no alternative that excels in certain areas where Madden fails (just like 2K used to get kind of a free pass for a shitty franchise mode b/c "if you want franchise, just get Madden").

Definitely. Too bad EA hasn't done shit with a potentially great brand in forever (not even the Mutant League Basketball promised in the Mutant League Hockey instruction manual I believe).

I foresee a bidding war for every license from here on out. It is going to be like game telecasts where the stations bid on the rights every 5 years or whatever.

For example, official football and hockey license EA gets.

Take Two gets official NBA/MLB license.

So then only one game will be the official licensed sports game which means if it sucks we are screwed without any type of alternative. Sports games without official licenses is like buying Sams Choice cola instead of Coca Cola and Pepsi.

if this version of events is accurate, and the decision to award an exclusive license was basically the nfl's, then ea was not evil to do what they did. they're still evil for generally debasing the form. but that's a more obscure evil.

Wow, good that he stood up, that letter really convinced me! I think everybody overreacted and misjudged the whole thing!

EA has been prodding the NFL for years for an exclusive license. They finally made the NFL an offer they couldn't refuse.

Actually they can get the license to make a Blood Bowl version of football. Since Mutant League is an EA series which I always thought was based on this rpg fantasy sports game. It may be finally a football game I may like for once.

Nothing wrong with this. Its not like SEGA will stop making sports games.

It's fucked up because now they have no chance of competing with EA. I'm quite sure that Visual Concepts next-gen football game was well under way to fully take advantage of Xenon next year, with probably millions of dollars going in to develop it, but now they won't have a NFL license to make the money back. :\

Either that is the most butched spelling of a word in 2004, or that man has finally come up with a great way to write in a Boston accent.

That spelling is so totally butch ("exhibiting stereotypically or exaggeratedly masculine traits or appearance. Used especially of lesbians and gay men").

I can't believe EA fans thinks this news is good. Sega was bringing down the price for NFL titles to $20 and now that EA has exclusive rights it will $55!

It's just like those N-fans that don't want any competition on the handheld market :lol

simple mistake FFS..... its audacity right ? :\

It's not just Sega. This means we can never have another Blitz game, or a true new Tecmo Bowl.

Six years ago 989 was making a better football game than EA. Who's to say there's not another developer that could push the envelope, bring new things to the table Tiburon would never even think of?

I'm trying to figure out if this is a joke or not. Because the ramifications indeed point to no more competing football games. With no license there is no point to releasing one.

I still think that it'll be $60. :D

although it wouldl rock if you would be able to share and download user created teams and players freely over the net... wouldnt take long for some full nfl rosters to appear

Well I think that's exactly what the NFL wants. On the TV side, broadcasters don't even make money on the NFL anymore, but they slit their throats bidding the contracts to outrageous levels.

I think EA is kind of taking a little too much flack for this. I mean the NFL set the wheels in motion for this. I'm interested to know what were the losing offers...

BULLSHIT

There was a rumor on the net a few months ago (it was even posted on this forum and dismissed as fake) that EA was courting the NFL with a $1 billion offer for exclusive rights to players and teams.

Now EA gets exclusive rights and their online PR spin is that the NFL came to them? Liars.

Funny, if Sega would have bought the rights, everyone bitching will be saying, "GO SEGA!!!"

Funny, that still doesn't change the fact that having only one publisher capable of making NFL games sucks for anyone who likes playing them.

No, they really didn't. Thats 100% complete, pure, EA PR BULLSHIT. EA has been pushing for this for years, they finally were willing to move up to the NFL's price requirement when Sega took a bite out of their asses.

Fuck EA. I'm not buying any of their shit from now on. Quite the statement right there, I buy tons of MS' shit with no qualms. EA I'm completely sickened by. The NFL too but thats nothing new, the NFL and NFLPA have been whores for decades.

I'm going to love it when the majority of Tiburon's staff finds themselves out on their ear because EA no longer feels like paying veteran coders to make a game they could outsource to a high school C++ class and get almost equal sales numbers. Sure, they'll make strides, strides towards beating out Tomb Raider as the most milked, rehashed, game design of all time.

EA did this a reaction to Sega and any other developer who would seriously try to compete with us and force us to make a better product. The NFL and Player's Association went to several different developers wanting to ink an exclusive deal, but we would have paid ten times more than any of them so that was mostly just for show. We have been paying one or both of these two groups for a long time (e.g. 15 years of making Madden) and they went with us, since we have the most money.

Both the NFL and the Player's Association are cashing their checks. Innovation and game play will suffer.

Fixed.

How wants to bet we'll be jetpacking and fake blitzing in 2009 on our Xenons, while hoping that our online games don't go to OT because EA charges by the minute?

people keep harping on the fact that EA no longer needs to try. guess what? Madden 2003 is HONESTLY better than ESPN NFL 2k5. I'm not saying that to be funny, or as a cheap shot. If you gave me updated rosters, I would honestly rather play madden 2003 than I would ESPN NFL 2k5. the espn series is so broken it just isn't fun to play after a few weeks. I think this could be good for VC though. I would be interested in buying a football sim with a more mature franchise mode (such as drug suspensions, late hits out of bounds, and so on). what a lot of people don't realize is some features in football games are held back by the NFL. without the NFL's consent needed, VC can make a hard-hitting sim with some stuff out of playmakers. I would definintely pay $19.99 for it, NFL/NFLPA or not
