Earplugs safe to sleep with?

So long story short, I'm tired of my housemate keeping me up into the wee hours with music/yelling/fucking, and after barely missing my 9am seminar this morning I need an alternative.

Any recommendations on earplugs? Is it safe to keep them in all night? Will I hear my alarm?

(Disclaimer: I've asked him to turn it down multiple times, he's a horrible sociopath with apparently very poor hearing)

No, no, no... your roommate sounds like a total dick who has no respect for you. You need to confront him again.

He has no respect for anyone or anything. He also eats others food, and is incredibly rude to people. There is no window for betterment. I've only got 4 months left living with him, and I need a solution fast.

I sleep with headphones in every single night, and I slept with earplugs in every night for 2 or 3 years. I think it's safe enough, though your ears might feel a little uncomfortable at first and it can be hard getting the earplugs out.

I've considered if it could be a hazard if a fire was happening in my house, but I think I'd hear the alarm, and if I didn't I'd probably wake up from the smoke and heat before I got burned to death.

Edit: I only ever had cheap earplugs you can buy at lots of stores like a supermarket, drug store, etc. I used regular orange ones that came in big packs.

I had someone like him as a housemate at a certain point...every day with the raggae music (samne 3 tracks every day) and late night pot parties that culminated in them frying something and stinking the whole house.
Confront him if you can, but GL getting anything from it.

I slept with earplugs in every night for like eight years and never had any problems. But, about six months ago, both my ears started to hurt terribly every time I put earplugs in, and now I can't use them at all, it's just too painful. And now my life is ruined because I can't sleep without earplugs. Sometimes I even sleep wearing huge earmuffs that are made for dudes working on noisy construction sites. I'm insane.

He's not Emperor Roommate. If you're not going to confront him, then you're just going to have wear ear plugs for 4 months.

you could always poison him

Sounds very familiar, and yeah after 5 months of politely asking and just getting a slight decrease in the heavy bass, I've resigned myself to acceptance. It isn't getting any better.

That's the worst bit, it's dubstep so you can hear the rhythm more than you can the actual music.

There's only so many times you can confront someone, y'know? It's his imminent personality, it's not something you can change over the space of a year.

Dang. Assuming there's no way to fix whatever is causing them to hurt your ears, do you think custom fitted earplugs might not hurt you?

I also sleep exclusively on my side with one ear resting on the pillow and another pillow over my other ear, seems kind of similar to your earmuffs but possibly more effective.

I'm sure you already know about these and probably use one, but noisemakers/humidifiers/fans/etc. are pretty helpful too.

I should try out those custom fitted earplugs now that you mention it. Thanks. Maybe they won't hurt because they won't be bigger than the ear canal and be pushing out into the ear the way normal ones do. Strangely, those ear mufffs aren't as uncomfortable to sleep in as I would have thought, although I have to stay on my back and can't sleep on my side with them.

I've wanted to sleep with earplugs for the longest time, but I'm always afraid I would sleep past my alarm clock, or that it would be so quiet I couldn't hear a smoke detector or security system if something were to happen.

The best compromise I've found is to get a good pair of noise-isolating headphones and plug them into your phone. Then you can set up a 1-2 hr long white noise track or whatever suits you, and fall asleep to that. The headphones themselves should quiet things down enough that once you're asleep, a little noise won't be able to wake you, and your phone alarm will play through them, to wake you up at the appropriate time. The one problem is finding a pair comfortable enough to sleep with, and one that will stay on your head/in your ears if you tend to toss and turn at night.

There have been times where I have wanted to wear earplugs while I slept, but I cannot get up on time unless I have an alarm set (and is both audible and not too close to me). As such, I seem to have adopted a strange sleeping position where my arms cover my ears.

Surely there must be an alternative like earmuffs adapted for sleeping? Earplugs seem like they would trap in wax so it can't fall out while you're sleeping, and they would also push the wax further into your ear.

I often sleep with earplugs in, they are a godsend and I'd definately recommend getting some. Before I moved to my current studio I also lived with extremely noisy housemates, it was driving me insane until I got some earplugs and it solved everything.

There are different types of earplugs, be sure you get the ones specifically for noise cancellation / sleep and not the default yellow construction site earplugs or something. They're super soft so they won't hurt your ear when you're lying on your side. And for some mysterious reason [not really] I can always hear my alarm perfectly fine.

Go for it dude.

Nah, when you wake up and start moving around the wax warms up and drips out.

I've slept with earplugs and a small fan for noise for almost three years now due to apartment noise and just in general not being able to sleep well. Never had any pain or any issue with not waking up to the alarm.

I've always gotten these soft purple ear plugs from rite aid.

There is no real problem with them. Just put them in right before you go to sleep and take them out right when you wake up. Roll them nicely in your hand so they become thin and then quickly insert so that they puff out and shape into your canal nicely. Though I'd probably tell the roommate that he's being a jerk by keeping you awake.

Depends on what kind of buildup your ears have?

Just replace them if they are the foamies. And if you use the rubber ones wash them. Wash your hands. Bacteria can build up, but you should be fine unless you poop on your hands before you insert them.

I wear earplugs every other night when my wife is snoring. Sometimes my ear canals feel a little sore and itchy when pulling them out, but that goes away after a minute.

I'm considering it since my current girlfriend snores pretty regularly...but I'll see if I can adapt without them since I know you can become pretty dependent on earplugs once you start using them.

Use the foam ones; they tend to be less expensive and I find that (unless you are looking at really higher end earplugs) work the best.

I sleep with them in sometimes.

I been using them for a few years. But recently have tried a compromise, I sleep with one earplug in. I tend to sleep on one side, so I have that ear on the pillow, and put one in my other ear. I will turn over in the night, but if something wakes me up (like the wife snoring), I just roll over. So far it works pretty good...

I've used these every night for almost 2 years: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EPQ86A/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Set your alarm to vibrate and put it under your pillow.

I used to use those but moved on to these: Howard Leight MAX-1 Foam Ear plugs Uncorded NRR33 (20 Pair). The noise reduction seems to be similar, but really I like the flanged ends. It makes them much easier to take out compared to the Hearos earplugs. Also, although wasteful, I like that that each pair is in its own little package. If I need to sleep at a place other than my home, it is convenient to throw a pair in my bag and not have to worry about it getting dirty during travel.

Also, as long as you keep your ears clean, you can use the same earplugs for a few nights in a row. I tend to change mine out every 3 days or so.

Foam ones are inexpensive and comfortable enough for sleeping, on top of safe.

If you can sleep with something sticking out from your ears, Peltor's plugs are the bomb. I got these for the range and they are more than enough to deafen a .22lr handgun to manageable levels without using my Howard Leight earmuffs.

Green tip for outdoor/relatively low noise usage, yellow tip for indoor shooting/loud ass bangs.

Edit: I also use them if I need to sleep during transoceanic flights. They are a godsend.

I would love to try something like this, but I am a sidesleeper and these wouldn't work for me.

I'm such a light sleeper that I have to sleep with them. I've been contemplating getting these, though:

When I was looking at earplugs about a year ago, I stumbled on this. It seems good in theory, but I don't think it will have any noise reduction at all. There won't be any seal to keep the snoring/sounds out. It would really depend on what your needs are. If you want to listen to music while you sleep, these would be great. If you are wanting to mask/drown out other sounds, I would look elsewhere.

If he has poor hearing, why don't he get headphones ? he can listen as loud as he wants and not bother anyone

I often use those basic yellow earplugs you can buy in packs at chemists, whenever I hit the sack earlier than my housemates and them being up makes it a bit harder to sleep. While they don't act as absolute sound blockers, they filter the noise down so it all sounds like soft background audio, easy to tune out from and fall asleep, but at the same time keeps you attentive to any louder noises like my phone alarm.

I've actually used straight earphones, and while uncomfortable, they work. That said, I was using what equated to white noise, specifically the sound of the ocean. It was enough to drown out my wife's cpap machine.

used to use them quite a bit. flatmate is a musician. You probably should use those meant for sleeping.

Noticed that my ear canal became bigger over the years and I was worried that it might have affected my hearing a bit. Nowadays I even stopped using in-ear headphones except when I'm flying for noise-cancelling.

That is your problem.

I can hear everything through the walls of my room. Chatter, walking, etc. I can't just tell my roommates to stop existing after I go to bed so I was in the same predicament as you. I used earplugs every night for months and it was okay. No problems here. My alarm was a sharp enough noise to penetrator the ear plugs. Now I just got a loud air filter though that makes white noise to cover up those sounds so I can sleep without them.

That is your problem.

Suggesting conflict with an unstable person in your living situation is a very bad idea.

Holy shit this is funny.

I cannot sleep at all (unless I'm passing out from exhaustion or something) without a fan on or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUHFGM/?tag=neogaf0e-20 . The sound conditioner does a pretty good job of drowning out noise.

I've used these for the last 5 years or so. Best sleep-aid ever.

Other things you can consider:

* IEM earphones -- some of them have very good sound and are just as good as earplugs. Back sleeping recommended.

* Soundproof your room. If the roomie is across the hall, you could substantially reduce the noise by sticking a thick towel under your door, and possibly cutting a thick styrofoam to match on the door (home depot has 1" thick 8'x2' boards for 10-15 bucks).

* Reorganize roomie's room. You mention the bass being a major issue, bass output is _extremely_ placement dependent. Kid probably has his sub right next to him, can't feel the bass, and is cranking it up. Bass response is highest when you stick the sub on one corner and you listen from the opposite corner. Middle of the room is the worst possible location, followed by wherever is right next to where you'll be sitting. This won't get you balanced 20hz-20khz but your asshole roommate is obviously only after chest-thumping bass. Get something like an Auralex Subdude, or, failing that some heavy foam to put under the sub and you can reduce the bass bloat further.

I've been using them since I moved into my current appartment 5 months ago. That fucking fridge buzzing all night right behind my bed! It was quite uncomfortable in the beginning (similar to tight in ear headphones when you aren't used to them), but now it has become a routine to squeeze them into my ears. Also, I've never missed my alarm, but it makes the snooze feature a lot more pleasing.

I couldn't sleep with earplugs in because the ringing in my ears would drive me insane... I do sleep with a fan though. I can't sleep without it.
