I doubt he was intending to cause it serious harm, just get it away from him. Nothing will come of this in the legal system because the dog was unleashed.

Not enough info.

If the dog ran at the guy barking and he instinctively reacted it's hard to fault him. Over reaction not criminal.

If he was just being a shitty and petty person and punted the dog then sure he needs to be punished, but sounds like he was the one who called the cops.

Can't they check and see how hard the dog was hit?

Sad to see anybody lose a pet but I Can't stand people who somehow think their dogs don't need to be leashed because they are small. See it a lot in my neighborhood and it makes it that much harder for me to walk my bigger dogs around.

The owner of the dog is the one to blame here. It doesn't matter that it's a small dog, nobody likes to be bitten. Dogs should be on a leash at all times!

Besides not everyone likes dogs and some people (myself included) are actually afraid of dogs.

That's terrible, but the lady should definitely keep her dogs on a leash. When I was younger I had a deathly fear of dogs, and if I was startled by one I may have kicked it just like this guy. When I was 8 years old, I got bit by a dog that left me with some pretty crazy scars. I ended up with 40+ stitches. That made me afraid of "stranger" dogs for a long time. Although, I had my own dog that I loved. As well as kept on a leash.

While owner should have had the dog on a leash the jogger is a piece of shit. We have owned pugs for years and they would never hurt a soul. Their also tough for being small. That asshole had to have kicked that dog damn hard to kill it like that.

I agree with those who also say they're family. If i were there he'd have been in a word of pain.

I'm not gonna pounce on you for your view but some perspective is needed:

That size dog poses no threat whatsoever to an adult.

Hence the kick isn't justified.

People get startled by bugs, and the immediate reaction is to kill them. What threats do those things pose?

You don't know how people are going to react. The moral of the story is keep your pets on a leash, it's for their own protection.

I used to have a neighbor with a really terribly behaved tiny chihuahua that he would never keep on a leash. I know chihuahuas are tiny, and there was absolutely no risk to my life, but that dog was horribly trained and would always rush and attack me in my own front yard. One time it really got its teeth in to my leg, tearing my jeans and making my leg bleed something fierce. Out of pure instinct, you can bet I kicked that dog off of me, fucking hard.

I felt terrible about it, the dog doesn't know any better. I wish I could have just kicked the owner, who should have kept their dog on a leash.

Not having been there, we can't really comment on this story. There's a chance the dude was an asshole who went out of his way, or there's a chance this was a dog that even though it's tiny can still do some damage and he reacted instinctively.

I could understand kicking a pit bull or large dog chasing after you. But a pug? That is like kicking a rabbit or something.

I hate my trash neighbor's dogs because they let them run loose through my neighborhood, and they have been agressive towards me at night. But I wouldn't hurt them unless I was truly threatened. I'd rather kick the owner's ass than the dog's. It isn't the dog's fault the owner is stupid.

Jackben

bitch I'm taking calls.
Calling it now, posters will be talking cross-purposes in this thread out of how they would feel if their dog died and get mad at others logically pointing out that a lot of the fault lies with the owner. We don't know exactly how it played out but a lot of the facts lead me to believe this guy was just trying to run and didn't mean to kill the dog. Either way, all of it could have been avoided if the dog was properly leashed.

Unleashed little dogs in trails is something I see a lot in the summer time. It's really stupid and dangerous with runners and cyclists on those trails.

Everyone in this story is an asshole.

Leash your pets.

Don't kick random tiny dogs.

Just... People should try to suck less. I know it's hard, but try!

Plus, unless the pug was severely unhealthy (possible) or really weak, I have a hard time seeing how an accidental tap (or even a trip as it got tangled in the joggers leg) could have killed the dog. Pugs are pretty solid little dogs.

That he stopped and called the cops on himself isn't necessarily any sign that it was an accident, just that he probably recognized he couldn't just jog on out of there after killing a pug.

I am definitely not defending the guy, but all pugs (or dogs) for that matter are not your dogs. You never know when one might bite.

Equally responsible?

The fuck?

I've experienced too many incidents where people let their animals run off leash and trouble ensues. I have a dog who is afraid of other dogs and it infuriates me when their rude dogs run up to us, my dog reacts like a scared dog on a leash, and then they get angry. It's fucking bullshit and it's completely avoidable.

Be a responsible parent. Put your animal on a leash. It's not hard.

People that don't leash their dogs fucking piss me off.

That said, dude could have just kept running, it's just a little pug.

Poor dog. : (

The jogger and owner are equally responsible for what happened. He overreacted and she should have had her animals on leashes.

Lol equally responsible. What the guy did was far far far worse and he's lucky he didn't get his teeth knocked in.

“He told police he just tapped her,” Lisi said. “But he needs to be held accountable for his actions.”

And that means, at best, taking him to small claims court for the estimated value of the animal plus medical costs (in this case, the cost of the cremation) - probably about $2k-$3k.

Pets aren't people (legally), they are property. And unfortunately, someone killing or injuring your pet is about (legally speaking) on par with them keying your car. Unless you can prove animal cruelty, which is unlikely since the dog was unleashed, all you can really go after them for is the cost to replace your animal and/or any associated medical costs. Which, obviously, isn't really any consolation at all.

It's one of the reasons I'm extremely protective of my animal(s).

The world is a cruel ass place. Keep your dogs on a leash, behind a fence, etc. People can be complete fucking dicks for no reason.

Personally I hope that dude gets the book thrown at him. I mean why would you bother kicking a dog that small at all. Let alone hard enough for it to drop dead.

unless he's Zangief or something I serioously doubt he woulc kill the dog just by strangling him between his calves

I've kicked a dog a good solid ways and almost wiped out myself when it ran between my legs during a run.

It was a pretty solid connection.

Unknown prexisting medical conditions could make it a lot easier to accidentally kill a dog.

people can and will get startle by dogs running around, doesn't matter how small it is. My friend is a big guy but he got bitten when he was a kid and always has this irrational fear of dog. If your dog is out in public, leash it.

Why are people assuming that everyone knows pugs are harmless?

I certainly wouldn't. I'm pretty uncomfortable around any dogs.

My first instinct when startled by something at my feet is to try and scoot it away, sometimes with light kicks. The dude could have stumbled or tripped and gotten seriously injured. I think some people have the picture in their head of the dude getting angry and punting the dog like a football, but it probably wasn't like that. He says it was a light tap to try and shoo it, and knowing I'd probably do the same, I'm inclined to believe him.

I don't really care about the jogger or the lady. Sucks for the dog. Anyone who willfully kicks a non threatening dog you are a piece of shit fuck head.

It's the dog's owners fault. Keep your animals on a leash you dumb idiot. I don't blame the jogger for kicking a dog that was running towards him without a leash.

Nothing like a pet thread to bring out the internet tough guy routine.

The jogger fucked up, the owner fucked up. Of course, that's assuming it wasn't malicious. We'll never know since it's apparently just the two of them disputing the facts.

But you people that are trying to honestly suggest brutal assault on someone for hurting your dog are out of your goddamn minds. Your dog is not a person, and it is not a child. You have every right to be pissed off, file charges, and/or chew someone out for such a thing. You absolutely do not have the right to beat the shit out of them or any of the other nonsense people are writing here, nor would the law be on your side if you did.

All I can say is leash your pets unless you're specifically at a park where leashes are not required.

If I'm in a situation where it's me and my dog and some random dog running up to me unleashed, it's going to be me and my dog I'm taking care of. In the case of a small dog like this I'm probably just picking my dog up and walking away unless it appears aggressive.

But at the same time I don't blame people for getting angry/overly defensive. I don't know the dog's temperament or what type of shots they do or don't have. Just leash your pets to protect them as much as possible.

Sounds like the dog was walking away, though? So little excuse here for kicking it.

This is my vibe. Its the principle of kicking a fucking pug as a human being. Regardless of being off a leash... come on.

Why are people assuming that everyone knows pugs are harmless?

Because it's pretty well known in general?

It's a pig-looking little thing with a monkey face.

Has it been said anywhere whether or not the jogger in question has said he suffers from some sort of dog-phobia? People have been bringing up personal stories of how they developed their phobias regarding dogs, but we don't really know if that's even in play with this story.

Hell even then you have to watch them. Last summer some asshole here was going around and poisoning peoples dogs in their yards.

You know, I'd say that the jogger would be fine. If a dog ran up to me and I just had a reaction to kick it, then... well... that's why you keep dogs on leashes where it says to keep dogs on leashes (saying this as a dog owner).

But the fuckhead is obviously already lying by saying it was 'just a tap'. No, it killed a dog, so it wasn't just a tap. So it makes me question just how necessary the kick was.
