Ed Sheeran scores 16 out of top 20 charting singles, highlights uselessness of charts

Everytime Shape of You comes on I can't help but think lyrically it's terrible. Also, I can't place it, but the opening beat sounds like it's from something else.

This is all slightly surreal as I went to school with him. I have no interesting stories, he was a ginger kid who was on the cooler side of the room, and I was thinking "oh yeah like that'll take off." I mixed a local gig he played once, like super early. It was the same stuff of guitar and a loop pedal.

Anyway - the chart. Yeah, the excitement has long gone, and this is an extra nail in the coffin. I think streaming being mixed in with traditional sales was a huge issue anyway - you combine two behaviours, one is a one-off (purchase), one is a longer activity of listening (streaming). Sales track the rate of change in to what people are getting in to - streaming slows down change, excitement, etc.

Then the other thing is what is the point of the distinction between a 'single' and an 'album track' mean these days anyway? These are all album tracks, but are on a singles chart, because of streaming. So what sales belong on which chart, and what activity? It's a mess.

This is not to say that tracking streaming in a chart is a bad thing - absolutely not - but it's different and should be considered as.

Holy crap, people actually listen to Ed Sheeran.

It's the equivalent of eating paper to me -- there's like, zero interesting aspects to his stuff.

His hit single is about taking a chick on a first date to Golden Corral and actually getting laid after. I have no idea how the hell this dude got popular, other than sounding like an even less appealing Justin Timberlake

There were some songs on his X album that I thought were decent. Haven't heard his new stuff yet.

Edit: Ok did a quick listen and his newest stuff is mostly really bad. I think that he has potential but his sounds like he's getting squeezed straight through the machine to get every last ounce of creativity pressed out.

Yes. Just wait 'til you find out the number of nicknames that can be derived from Elizabeth.

I remember when they thinking about tracking Guitar Hero/Rock Band dlc sales to effect the chart, they're trying to hold on to relevance despite being two decades out of date.

Saw this earlier and was fairly shocked.

I can't say I'm a fan, and his two singles have been overplayed to absolute death on radio recently.

But... I actually think this is exciting. With the advent of streaming, the charts are far more open.

10 years ago, you'd need to have a single out - now its whatever people are streaming across a whole range of releases.

But the UK chart is shit at the moment.

I don't even know who the people streaming/buying all of those Ed Sheeran tracks are. Seems like it's a mixture of teenage girls and 40+ mums.

Or just people who like the blandest, most inoffensive pop currently available.

Ed sheeran is great , your taste is bad.

See , opinions

Oh fuck that's the guy who sings that horrible shape of you song I heard on the radio? That insufferable thing is #1? *shudders* Well, I already knew people had no taste, but seriously, fuck that song.

A big chunk of the other songs are nothing like shape ofyou and are far better.

Shape of you is the club song of the CD

I heard Castle on the Hill these days and am I going insane or did I hear some auto-tune there? I might have misheard and oh Christ I hope I did.

I'm tired of jaded people on the internet acting like they are somehow deeply offended by middle of the road top 40 music.

Some of Sheeran's songs are great (Photograph would probably be in my top 100 of this decade) others are bland and overplayed but it's still listenable.

Eh I listened to his second album and nothing really stood out to me, but I probably should give it another shot.

I think my main problem is he has these great songs like "Thinking Out Loud:" and "Castle on the Hill" and then he has these generic club tracks like "Don't" and "Sing". Like I said there's nothing offensive about the latter, but I'd rather not be listening to them one after another, just looking for the hidden gems.

Snatching wigs and beards, I see.

Ed Sheeran rocks and I don't care what anyone says! I do admit, "Shape of You" is kinda lame, but everything else is amazing. Was browsing YouTube one day and came across some amazing covers of his. He did a pretty kick ass version of "Dirrty": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf_ldxntwJg

Also, Ed Sheeran's material is about as enticing as a lukewarm cup of over-milked tea, I have no idea why people enjoy it on such a significant scale but hey ho.

He's super talented, writes schmaltzly songs, plays the guitar and has a great voice ?

...hate me...
I can tolerate Shape of You but the god damn remix now plays on radio and stuff makes my blood boil.

Someone gets paid to do that.
