Edge 248 (Christmas) - Transformers Universe

Anything new in this preview?
1313. Doesn't appear to be an emergent game. Has some Uncharted like sequences. Great looking seedy environments and animation that you'd expect from LucasFilm. Runs on three 680s currently. The film talent is impressive makin it feel next gen but there may not be a focused game there yet.

From reading it, sounds like they've got all the ingredients, though. Pity Clint Hocking's not on it because it sounds like they need someone like him.

Sure.

"ZombiU makes the relationship between TV and GamePad screens feel fresh, and - displaying a clear awareness of horror gaming conventions - it toys with you brilliantly [...] and contribute to sophisticated shocks. The GamePad's new way to play also presents new ways for you to be played, and the resulting surprises are often delightful."

They go on to lament a back tracking section towards the end of the game, and a loss of "earthy realism" in the cheaper, fantastical enemies as the game progresses.

edit. I noticed they also said that the game fails to capture London's ethnic diversity, which was a concern of mine from the trailers also. Minor point, but a missed opportunity for Montpellier.

Next month maybe. Even the PS vita got a cover on the new Edge format.

Thanks for that! I can't say I'm surprised that the game takes a more fantastical approach by the end of it, since Ubisoft seems to love doing that, but it sucks that they had to resort to padding the length with a fetch quest like that. Still, it sounds like when it works, it works quite well.

Pretty polarizing scores for ZombiU so far. First a 92, then a 4.5 and now a 7.

Would love to hear what they have to say about it since I find Edge to be fairly competent reviewers.

I'll say personally, I played it at EG Expo and thought it was pretty clunky, also for what it's worth it's certainly not a looker either.

They didn't go into it much, but exploding zombies..? It was kinda silly when Half Life did it also now I think about it.

Interestingly Edge lists GTA V as PC, PS3 and 360. Maybe a mistake on their part.

I think it was 200 or 201 covers including the subscriber only Little Big Planet cover. They only switched to the new shitty covers at 231. I'm confident there were a few good ones after 200.

This is worrying.

Too much text. Their covers used to be minimalistic and sexy, now they're filled with stupid bulletpoints and hyperbole.

Edge 200 is probably the best single issue of any video game magazine ever.

yes, and sadly, my ex-girlfriend threw out my copy. it was the last copy i got when my sub was running out. i miss that copy more than my ex. just kidding. well, maybe not now that i think about it.

Those scores are bull when compared to Halo 4. No way in hell was Halo 3 a 10/10, so to give H4 an 8 when it is leagues above is inconceivable.

Agree with HocusPocus' post.
Could just be that they're trying to be more honest with their reviews in light of DoritosGate... hmm. Interesting to see quite so many middling scores and even a bad score for an EA game. Honestly hope this continues, where really good games are actually treated as more of a rarity than a commonality.

I think, as always, it's important to note that different reviewers have different opinions. And when I say that I don't mean that the person in question views Halo 3 as better than Halo 4. Instead I'm saying that, in all likelihood (with no proof whatsoever I might add), two different people reviewed these games.

You may say that it seems inconsistent, but I doubt the person reviewing Halo 4 cares much, and would probably have a bone or two to pick the the publisher if they altered his score to keep the fans happy.

The cover that started the downfall :(

Are you kidding me? That is one of my favourite Edge covers. They had gig posters on the back! How much more creative can you expect it to be?

It's the one of the first covers I remember in my buying history having text on the cover actively trying to sell the content. I remember they even mentioned it in the opening bit from the editor. As a one off cover it's not too bad, but it's kind of against the style the magazine had established

Before and after that covers were just images

Then within a year or so they'd switched to having tons of text. Maybe the Rock Band cover sold well.

Looks like there is a bit a backlash against Microsoft for Halo 4 without Bungie being there. It definitively affected some scores and GOTY considerations. However, Halo 4 is far and away the best Halo game ever crafted. More proof that these scores have lost their relevance and meaning. I view them now as a good / bad scoring system. 7 and up means the games ok and anything lower means it is technically suspect. I remember back in the original Xbox days all the fights and brew ha ha about review scores ahaha. So glad those days are behind us.

Ugh, are you serious? It deserves a two point bump down for how fucking lacklustre Spartan Ops is alone. How it shipped in such an awful, uninspired form is beyond my understanding given the extreme scrutiny the game would be under coming from Bungie, let alone a new studio like 343i.

It's far from the best Halo, but it's not the worst and that's totally fine. Need a thisisneogaf.gif

They have been doing that on & off since the very beginning, it's not really a new thing.

I'm not claiming it was the first time ever, but I identify that as the first time in my buying the magazine (from around 150-210 or so) that it was as blatant, even though it was done in a tongue in cheek way.

Oh, if you have only been buying for a little while I can see why you would think that( I remember the Ferrari cover that came in a slipcase, that had all the text on the slipcase so the actual cover looked awesome, but that was the first time I realized that the covers look so much better without text).

Did the gaming press play a completely different AC3 than me? Because, while I agree with the Liberation score (7/10), giving AC3 an 8/10 is a joke. 4/10 is what it deserves. It's not good at all. Naval combat was the only thing I actually enjoyed while playing it but even then, its missions were usually pretty pointless.

No way. ODST still has the best campaign in the series.
Hell no. By far the weakest. The hub world feels completely redundant and pure padding, and the levels are cookie cutter b-sides. It's still good, just pales in comparison to it's peers.

Firefight was rad though, better than in Reach.

3x 680s...

Yeah, it's just a tech demo ala Indian Jones years ago.
