Just wondering if there is a website that attempts to define what every style of electronic nusic is. New to the music and would really like to know the difference between them. Thanks.

I love this quote though.

It was a reactionary stance by west coast rappers to pretend that the east coast rappers' neo-gangster look didn't phaze them. This sparked the infamous East coast-West Coast rivalry, which peaked in the late 90s with many deaths on either side, including the two high-profile ones of Tupac Shakur of the west and Notorious B.I.G. of the east. So who won? ....I think the South won. They're the ones who still remember that hip hop is about partying, dancing, and having fun, and not about deeeeeeeeez nuuuuuuuts.

The guy kinda insulted IDM. What a douche.

and this here, in his description of "illbient", was rather unnecessary:

The Turntablists like this one a lot....for when the beats just aren't slow enough, they want to bring them down to a crawl. Or a slither. Like a snail across a desert. Or like a music guide maker searching for a clumsy metaphor. Why? Because it's ILL, y0! Jesus, what a stupid word. Who comes up with slang these days, anyway? How did "sick", "bad" and "ill" become compliments? Before long, street kids will be going up to one another: "man, you are a fucking asshole!" "hey, thanx dood."

I like the site though.

IDM does have a tendancy to get lost up it's own ass (as if the name itself wasn't clue enough). Illbient was a fairly silly movement... but some good tunes.

Anyway, you can't take his comments too seriously, it's just a laugh.

IDM is often times incredibly complex, so it deserves a lot of respect. Sometimes if I've been listening to IDM for a long time (like a whole week with nothing but IDM) I go back to other forms of music and just think, man this stuff lacks substance. It takes a while to readjust.

But yeah, some of his descriptions are really funny.

I find a lot of it just overly wanky. Micro programming and technical editing wizardry at the expense of soul. Some incredible stuff no doubt, but the self-indulgence of much of it is off-putting to me. Early Autechre, Squarepusher and Aphex is about all I can handle.

Holy shit! Go to >Downtempo> ambient breaks> track 2....its fucking from rez soundtrack! but its not the same song...the beat is the exact same. This rob d guy ripped off the guy who made that rez song in area 5 (forget his name). Of course, all techno sounds so simliar in each sub-genre its hard to tell who's ripping off who.

I think the name you're looking for is Adam Freeland.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around though. Seeing as Rez came out in 2001 and Robb Dougan's 'clubbed to death' came out in 1995.

Happy Dance = Official Music Genre of Dance Dance Revolution. Ahhh, ain't it true, but its such harmless music AND its catchy, I can't help but love it. That whole little nexus around there about sums up the game anyway...Happy Hardcore, Eurobeat, etc.

IDM is my favorite genre of music, but I'll agree with what someone else here said: it's wanky and gets lost in its own ass.

I'll never defend IDM because of the pretentiousness and arrogance inherent in the genre.

That site is a real gem. It's really helpful to have all those samples to get a better feel for how the different sub-genres sound.

I hate trying to put a label on any of it, personally.
