hyperbolically metafictive
it isn't a game, and it's even less of a musical instrument. maybe its proper genre is "multimedia installation," but i prefer to think of it as a really neat audiovisual toy. the plankton i've mainly been screwing with is "rec rec," which lets you record four brief clips and then loop them. yes, i have computer programs that would let me do vastly more with loops. but electroplankton's extreme simplicity suspends any compulsion to do anything good, and thus frees me to screw around. i've been trying to recreate little bits of songs i like with an acoustic guitar and whatever vocal noises i can make. i just did a hilariously decent version of spoon's "stay don't go." getting the rhythms right took some time...i'm still not sure how it works. i wish i'd recorded it or something. the ds might not have any decent games yet, but plankton's a hell of a substitute.

now i'm going to get my harmonica and casio keyboard and try to replicate the riff from spiritualized's "i think i'm in love." i think i'm in love.

Does the DS have an audio out that a regular pair of headphones would fit?

If so, it'd be criminally easy to buy a stereo cable that fits headphone jack and mic jack at once and using a program to record your creations to .mp3.

Probably would make a cool idea for a website, too.

yes, thats what i was telling drohne to do last night.

i have the right cable, but the ds's headphone jack is stupidly recessed, and the housing of the plug is a bit large, so i can't get a secure connection. :/

if they do an electroplankton 2, they should let you save your loops. and they should let you import your loops into other plankton and further screw with them. but maybe that complexity would defeat the purpose.

Got to fiddle around with this some at E3 since one of the guys we were with had the import. It was very, very cool. Half the time I was just kind of sitting there amazed at how unique an experience it was for a "video game." I'm not sure if this would hold up over time, but the 30 minutes I played with the various plankton were a real treat.

This software is making me want a DS. I'm trying to wait for the "game" games though. It reminds me of a neat flash site called Infinte Wheel with interactive dub selectors. I really enjoy #4, #7, and #8. Like electroplankton, there isn't much sophistication included or a method of instant recording, but it does let me believe that I was an unheralded contemporary of King Tubby and Scratch Perry.
