Not much talk about this game anymore on here. So is anyone still playing it? Does it have lasting legs like Master of Magic does (did)? Or is everyone tired of it already and done playing it so soon?

People are probably waiting for 1.1

I'll say this- the technical problems are fixed to me as of 1.09. There may be a bug here and there, but no more then any other PC game.

Supposed to be some "free XP" info put out next week on SD forums also.

The technical issues are largely resolved, but the gameplay and AI are still utterly broken.

Well that's dissapointing. I'm having fun with Civ5 right now, and even though the AI is severely lacking, the gameplay is solid and still fun enough to keep me interested. I guess Elemental is just not ready to buy yet...:(

I'm still waiting for 1.1, which is going to be a huge overhaul, supposedly. Design, AI, aesthetic...tons of changes incoming.

With Civ V, Madden, Halo etc I just have Elemental on the back-burner. Based on what I have played of it, however, I fully expect Elemental to be my favorite game of 2011.

Would you recommend this game to somebody fairly new to RTS games? I mean, I've played some Warcraft 3, but Blizzard is incredibly good at streamlining a game. I'm a little worried since it looks cool but RTS games intimidate me. They're like the genre that bullies me back into my corner playing my jRPGs. :<

Elemental is a TBS game, meaning that you'll be assigning only one or two actions to your units / cities each turn. You don't have any of the pressure to build or move units out quickly, nor will you have to worry about how fast your hands are moving. Think Final Fantasy 1 or Civilization rather than Starcraft.

The game itself is fun, but still needs work. In all honesty, if you have other games you're interested in - you might want to look into those first and come back to Elemental a few months down the road. It has a lot of potential and an interesting aesthetic but right now I think its more appealing to fans of the old Master of Magic title. Still needs a bit more to stand on its own.

Play Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic instead of this. It's everything this game is trying to be, just utterly better in every single regard.

I'd disagree. Aow: SM AI is worse, and game has its own set of problems, which will never get fixed. AoW1 is fun for the campaign, and SM is alright, but only shines in MP.

Elemental is improving weekly right now.

This.

Bought it on release day (CE none the less) and gave it a try after the 1.09 patch and there's something here but it needs some work and the 1.1 seems to be all I'm looking for. Until then I have loads of games to keep me occupied (Civ V, EOIII, Four Warriors of Light and FFXIV).

The AI in Elemental is better? Are you on crack? I've yet to play a game (and this is including the recent 1.09) where the AI doesn't kamikaze their sovereigns into my most defended towns, instantly killing their entire empire. The AI in Elemental is so freaking broken it's almost comical. At least AOW:SM is functional.

I am going to get it once it is cheap, on sale and patched to hell and back.

Stardock rarely puts their own games cheap. You'll be waiting a while- though the game will patched to hell and back.

I hate saying this because I am a fan of Stardock, but it's always best to wait until their first XP. Kinda the same rules that applied to Paradox back in the day apply to Stardock now.

Then again, you do end up with the awesomeness of old Paradox.

I will be holding off with buying it till at least another 6 months I think. It's such a shame, I consider GC2 with add-ons to be the 4X game that finally beat MoO2 and I expected Elemental to do the same to Master of Magic :(

arstal

Whine Whine FADC Troll
You can always wait for the add-ons- especially since the deal to get the future 2nd XP free has expired.

BTW There's an announcement from SD about hiring a "name" guy to be the producer for post-release support coming today. Scuttlebutt on SD forums is that it's Kael from the FFH2 team.

Good call

http://www.stardock.com/about/newsitem.asp?id=2056

PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN - October 12, 2010 - Stardock Entertainment, developer and publisher of award-winning PC games, announced today that Derek Paxton has joined the studio as senior producer and will oversee Stardock's ongoing development and expansions of the recently released fantasy strategy game, Elemental: War of Magic (www.elementalgame.com).

Paxton is the creator and lead designer of the Fall from Heaven series of fantasy strategy games. Prior to joining Stardock, he was an external consultant for Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword and contributed to several of Firaxis's games including the recent Civilization V.

"This is the opportunity to marry my professional project manager career with my passion for game design," said Paxton. "I'm especially excited to work with the talented people at Stardock who have always been focused on creating great PC strategy games. I'm currently immersing myself in the world of Elemental, and I think everyone will be excited to see what is coming from Stardock Entertainment."

You can hear Paxton talk about his experiences with FFH here:

Things are looking better for this game. I will definitely pick it up after a few more patches and a sale.

I honestly don't care about a sale: if they patch it and it becomes the game I was hoping for, I'll buy. If not, I don't care how cheap it gets.

I'd pay a $100 for a game to rival Age of Wonders.

The Fall from Heaven mods are fantastic. And very, very impressive examples of mdding.

I think Stardock may actually be planning to put this on sale once the expansions are out.

They didn't really put GalCivII on sale until very late, so it will be a while. Stardock's philosophy on sales is tiny sales early and big sales after a game is pretty much done and just about everyone who really wanted it already has it.

1.1 first beta is scheduled for early November (1st week I believe) Some info was on the elemental site about the specialist system and a little on the magic system that are being changed.

The combat system, which is the real problem to me, that's going to be Kael's job- and that won't be out until 2011.

So is anyone playing currently? I'm trying to get into these types of games. I've played the 100-turn Civ 5 demo 3 times now and while I do like it I'm not really sure that it's grabbing me enough to want to spend $50. The opening just seems so...slow, I guess. Too much spamming the end turn button. I also don't really like that it progresses so quickly. I know these are items that the full game handles better than the beta so I'm not entirely counting it out.

I'd like something that allows me to focus more on taking things at a slow pace and gradually building a few really cool cities, a nice army and, eventually, waging warfare on a grand scale across a huge map. Would Elemental be any more conducive to that than Civ is? For what it's worth I like Elementals aesthetics much more, as well as the tactical combat and the fact that the game doesn't progress through time.

Pretty much most people are waiting for the redesign, which starts next week. Elemental 1.0x series was pretty mediocre, though the technical problems are solved now.

There will be a demo after 1.1 is completed.

For anyone who bought Elemental on Sunday due to Amazon's B2G1 deal, you can ask Stardock to change your Impulse purchase date to 10/31 after you register it if you provide a sales receipt. This will allow you to receive the first two expansions for free. I've confirmed this with Stardock Sales.

Oh. Tomorrow night Elemental should be getting up a big update to gameplay (though it's a beta , you'd need to enable pre-release versions in Impulse)

Changelog is up at elementalgame.com

68 new spells and a ton of large gameplay changes

Elemental 1.1 final comes out tonight.

They've really made a huge, vast amount of improvements to the game. Kael did a real bang-up job from me playing the betas.

I'd say, honest opinion right now- the game is an 8/10. There are still some balance issues and some UI quibbles that I dislike (The UI stuff was put off to 1.2), but the game is now fun, and they've added a lot to it, as well as fixing 99% of the bugginess and crashiness.

For those who have given up on the game, it's time to give it another shot tomorrow (tonight= LATE tonight, at least 10:30PM BTW)

Very excited. I've booted it up a few times as they've released 1.09(xx) versions to test stability and stuff but I haven't launched a full game. This is a perfect time for the patch to hit.

Man I wish they had the ability to wait til now to launch. Wide open window and people are probably burning out on Civ.

Nifty, though I'm expecting an Impulse Server Slam so I'll probably get to it in a near early morning as, IIRC, it will be a hefty patch given that I'm still at 1.0 as the game is in "wait for doings" mode.

He was already involved with Elemental though, he wrote that horrid novelization of the game too. He's just now an official Stardock employee.

But yea, post mega patch the game is still boring as all fuck.

Honestly one of my biggest problem with the game is how fucking ugly your Sovereign is, there's simply no way to customize him to the point that you're even remotely okay with his appearance (and that of course applies to every other character in the game) : I Couldn't they at least have put in an effort on the hair and beards and not make them look like something straight out of FFVII?

I thought Brad Wardell wrote the novelization of the game?

That's what I thought too. He is certainly listed as the author.

Also, the world and the conflicts in the novel aren't dull. (The writing is bad, but the universe is sort of promising)

1.11 is out:

1.11 is a stability patch based on the feedback given since 1.1's release. It resolves crashes and improves the AI.

Changes:
1. AI is much better at casting strategic spells.
2. AI better at queuing units to be trained.
3. AI unit design improved.
4. Crash fixes in the battle engine.
5. Resolved an end of turn crash.
6. Fixed a multi-threaded crash in evaluate relations.
7. More resources at placed on the map (about 50% more than 1.1).

Looks to be an AI-centric patch. Brad did an interesting post about the AI tweaks he made over Christmas and they really did seem to improve the ability of the computer to think on a grander scale and strategize correctly.

I think there were two books. The novel and a lore book that shipped with the special/limited edition of the game.

How does this game compare to Civ V. With the recent high-profile hires and Stardock's history of supporting their games, I'm considering this game. What say you Elemental-GAF?

Exists in a perpetual state of Quantum Crotch Uncertainty.
Improvements to the game's AI without concomitant improvements to the game's mechanics are rather disheartening. The propensity of the AI toward self-termination was, considering the overall state of the game, one of Elemental's most endearing features.

Lasthope106 said:

I felt the game was an incoherent mess upon its release, and I am of the same opinion still. All of the patches that the game has thus far received are very much the sort of thing that should have been implemented before the game ever saw release, seeing as they drastically alter or completely replace core game mechanics that really had no business not being locked down before they called the game finished.

If ever the day comes that the issues of Elemental are fixed I'm sure you'll hear about it, but that day is not today and the prospects of it being tomorrow are dim indeed.

Looks like this, apparently
.

Elemental: Fallen Enchantress includes an all-new battle system, more sophisticated spell casting, an updated economic system, new game mechanics, more creatures, quests and much more.

Elemental: Fallen Enchantress will be released as a stand-alone game but will be free to all players who purchased Elemental: War of Magic in 2010 and will be heavily discounted for anyone who purchases Elemental: War of Magic prior to Fallen Enchantress’s anticipated Summer 2011 release.

Further reading in the article indicates Paxton wants the game to focus more on exploration, world interaction and bigger spells ("envelop an entire enemy kingdom in the icy grip of winter or open a gateway to a shadow world that dark creatures can come through").

Contrary to most people I rather like the game as it is, even though I know intellectually it isn't that great. I'm interested to see what all this brings.

Edit: Also, apparently the game will be stand-alone, something Wardell says gives them more leeway to make a "new game". Apparently they will continue to iterate upon War of Magic for those who don't buy Fallen Enchantress.

The game is 50% off this weekend on Impulse. Is it worth it after all the patching? Kind of tempted considering I almost pre-ordered it at full price.

Absolutely not.

There is a reason this upcoming "expansion" is standalone and is basically redoing the whole thing from scratch. The game is an unmitigated disaster on all fronts.
