The funny thing is that some being granted a free blue check makes that now the status symbol. But because it's ambiguous in the UI people will claim they got theirs for free as well.

There was a time when companies and individuals were desperate to have a Twitter blue tick, because of the weight it added to any promotion or advertising they did on the site. It was a sign of both prestige and endorsement that boosted the message being put out to consumers.
Elon has now destroyed it, and in doing so has heavily weakened Twitter's usefulness as a platform for spreading commercial messaging, which hurts the site's ability to make money from those advertisers immeasurably.
Elon remains a strategic genius, right up there with Vladmir Putin.

I think a lot of people take an all or nothing approach when it comes to that stuff. Either they like everything Elon does or think it's all shit. Personally, I think the stuff he's doing with SpaceX is cool but also that what he's done with Twitter has shown him to be weird and petty.

To be fair, I think companies and celebs should get it to prevent people knocking them off. Not that they dont spew stupidity and self serving promotions "anything for a buck". But if they want to do that, let them be a verified well known crazy shill.
But for all the normal folks who think they are so awesome they need a validation stamp, and even worse using Twitter for 10 years for free and dont want to pay up $100/yr is even funnier. Ok fine, you skip out hitting a pub a couple times during the year. Or skip one shitty cheap fast food combo once a month. Theres the Twitter fee paid for.
Just goes to show how Me, Me, Me so many people are. True born and bred attention whores and losers. Before the internet and social media, you couldnt do that unless you got famous and plugged on TV or newspaper articles. The opportunity wasnt there. But the inherent lust for popularity and verification from the masses was actually always there.

I don’t know if there’s a point to existing if it isn’t to aspire to better and greater things. The same reusable rocket tech that can put people on Mars can be used to mine precious minerals on asteroids, for example. Humans will have to leave Earth eventually, and we won’t unless we try.

Verified accounts for notable people and businesses were there to provide trust and integrity. The system served a good purpose. Now it's seen as a detriment, an insult even, and for good reason when one takes even a cursory perusal of what is allowed on Twitter now.
Not saying Musk handled it correctly, more just that this is why I think putting such a huge dependence on social media in the first place is such a mistake. If important companies need to communicate their business/organization, doesn't this just further prove that social media like Twitter should be considered a public utility and not private? Imo there should be a much clearer distinction between social media and actual important communication, the checkmark thing is a symptom of this. I agree with you.

I have no idea how anyone or any company can effectively wade through a site with endless millions of people. It's such a weird thing because the traditional way of communicating is one on one. And for companies it's paid TV or magazine ads where they control it.
But with social media, it's a giant site. Almost all of them are free. You got some with paid checkmark stuff. And you got people purposely faking profiles, lying (whether it's on purpose or not), or influencers, normal folks and corporations all competing against each other for the most clicks and followers like a free for all of stupidity.

I'm going to take a guess his Aspergers condition makes him do socially awkward things without even knowing or caring he's doing it. Who knows. Maybe he thinks going on social media every day saying shit is his way of being open and honest with people. But in reality there's a time to say things and a time not to. And when that time comes, you got to decide whether it's private or ok to do publicly.
Then again, maybe he fully knows what he's doing and just jamming his tweets down people's throats.
I honestly think that Jeff Bezos is as evil if not more but he knows how to display some stability in public which for somebody in his position is crucial. You have always had crazy moguls including somebody like Howard Hughes which is an extreme example but even them his handlers knew to keep him hidden from the public. Elon Musk is in charge of billion dollar companies and sometimes acts like some 19 year old pot head with poor impulse control.

I think Elon's new verification stuff is utterly idiotic for various reasons verification is important for a variety of people. That said, I have to admit. Him trolling people by giving them their blue checks back and seeing insecure people scramble in full panic to announce to their followers "GUYS, LET ME BE CLEAR, I DID NOT IN ANY WAY PAY FOR TWITTER BLUE, PLEASE DON'T THINK I DID!" is absolutely hilarious.

I think it depends on the reason one would clarify. If they have a bunch of people asking them if they paid for twitter blue and they're just responding to that as a "Hey, I have a bunch of people asking me if I paid for twitter blue. The answer to that question is no." That's fairly innocuous.
But I believe most people announcing it are afraid of being trolled by online randos who go around looking for blue checks and respond "LOL you paid for twitter." Anyone who's concerned enough about what online randos think about them that they feel obligated to get out in front of it reek of insecurity. It's been stigmatized as this badge of shame. I think so many of the problems social media brings all comes back for peoples incessant desire to be accepted/liked and the way they act because of it. This is just one example(of many) of that.

I gave you a fire reaction for your suggestion that Elon should buy Reddit next, because it's a funny idea, even though it'll never happen. That said, the same post is where you started down this road, and I just wanted to point out why I disagree.
This is an appeal to importance fallacy. "We should not care about X, because Y is a much bigger problem, or because Y is even worse." If you learn to recognize this and not use it, you can also point out when people use it on you. The media uses this fallacy all the time. Here's an example:
"The twitter files are just the government trying to keep people safe from dangerous misinformation. Real government censorship is about jailing people for questioning the government, so I don't know why anyone is worrying about this." The logic is X is a good thing. And even if it's not a good thing, it's certainly not Y, and Y is the real problem, so why are we even talking about X?
I hope you see what I mean. Your arguments will be stronger if you avoid that sort of thing.

Humans haven't even figured out how to correctly coexist with earth after this long. Were breaking down its basic functions and distrupting them to unprecedented levels.
Trying to do it on a planet that is far less habitable and thus far less cooperative is a waste of time to me, a distraction at this current stage. We should work out the necessities of maintaining a healthy society on a plenty BEFORE we find a new one to screw up.
Also, we'd be wholly reliant on corporate powers to sustain our living at the base level. A group of people here can go start a society somewhere and live off the land if they really wanted too. On another planet, you'd only be able to go where those powers allow you to go. You'd need constant support and upkeep from what id essentially a corporation supplying you with the capacity to live.
Count me out of all that. Earth is plenty for this guy. But something tells me ill be dead long before that becomes a legitimate option
