English FA punishing players for decade old tweets. A step too far?

You were mugged at gunpoint for your possessions, you absolute roaster. You weren't picked out simply because of who you are.

FML, where are all these knuckledraggers coming from these days?

How do you know that their muggers didn't single them out for some characteristic of theirs? For all you know this persons muggers believed they were a member of an in-group which the muggers hated and targeted them for that reason rather then monetary gain... this person could easily be the victim of a hate crime. How dare you trivialize this persons suffering and loss? How can you marginalize their lived experiences with such frivolity?

What if things change and something you say that was socially acceptable at the time becomes socially unacceptable some number of years in the future... when should it end?

For example, what if I were to take extreme offence at being called a knuckledragger? Shouldn't you be cancelled on account of your offensive and hateful language?

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
I wouldn't hold such a thing against a person, no. People change dramatically between their tween years and becoming an actual, functioning adult.

I’ve had some time away to think. I may have over-reacted, but I stand by what I say. If you defend a homophobic comment - regardless how old the person who made the comment was - then you, by alignment, are homophobic. That’s all I have to say on the matter.
Jesus Christ, no wonder everyone is scared shitless of the Twitter mob. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It’s a tough one. He was a minor in the eyes of the law, but still accountable for his actions, and hate crime is still a crime regardless of how long ago it happened. If someone beat someone else up ten years ago and got away with it until now, do they still not deserve to be punished? On the scale of it, a few tweets are nothing, but the FA has to be seen doing something or risk being accused of allowing racism within the sport.
excuse me, a hate crime?

We are talking about a "social media post". Or a tweet essentially. That isn't a hate crime

Bowen, who apologised for the post, was given a warning by the FA a month later and told to attend an FA education course.

From the previous example, it's not a excessive punishment imo.

He made the post when he was 15, which the FA even took into consideration when they dished out their punishment.

Why put somebody thorough an education course for something they said almost a decade ago? To me, this doesn't just seem OTT, but comes across as very draconian.

No..

It was 10 years ago, he was 14......get off that line of thinking.. and I'm saying this as a gay man.

People have to be allowed to grow and change otherwise we might as well be living in China.

Nobody defended it in here.

You’re sounding like that Era twat who threw his 5yo son under the Twitter bus for saying “Ew!” at the sight of a black person - and who knows what the kid said that for, maybe it was completely unrelated to the person being black.

People really need to nuke their Twitter accounts one they become notable. Time and time again this sort of stuff has happened.

What did Ollie Robinson say? England cricketer suspended over tweets - but Oliver Dowden criticises ECB ban (inews.co.uk)
nuking social media won't do much. plenty of stuff is cached on google servers. if someone deleted something on their facebook/twitter/instagram it doesn't matter cause anyone could go looking through google and find old posts.

That’s why you feed it bad information. Chances are, you’re not the only one with your name. Google thinks I’m 50 with two kids

I fail to see your point. 14, in the UK, is what’s counted as an age at which someone can be legally accountable for a crime. If he’d stabbed someone, they’d be charging him. Committing a hate crime is no different.
You will not get the same sentence at 14 for the same crime as you would have been an adult. Because - as mentioned before - teens are not treated as being completely accountable for their actions.

People are not intelligent enough to be held accountable for what they put online until they turn 23.
And judging by this post maybe even older...

If a 24 year old is getting punished for shit they said as a 14 year old it's a bit harsh, but it's still stupid shit to say.

When i was like 16 i called almost everyone in my grade an asshole on xanga and if i ever run for POTUS (hard as I'm Australian) you're all gonna find out what a crazy triggered teenaged Tschumi howled about 15-odd years ago...

I'm not trying to go against you and your message mate, actually it makes sense though i have no idea what it means in the context of this thread, I'm just saying that your ex kgb guy is so salty i think he washed up on the shores of the dead sea at birth :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The FA is a fucking joke. As a Man United fan, I'm still pissed at them for penalizing Cavani for his "Gracias, negrito" tweet. Absolute pond life that lot.
Yep and they've been a complete and utter joke for years now. How that organization is still up and running and functioning they way that they are is beyond me.
