NEWS: Enterprise cancelled?

We have it on good authority that the doomsayers are about to be proved right, and that Star Trek: Enterprise is being cancelled.

Our longstanding insider on the Paramount set, Trekspy, will soon be Trekspy no more - since they're being laid off in the first week of March. Due to the nature of Trekspy's role, this suggests that principal photography on the sound stages will finish at around the same time.

On 7 January the production team were still working on the 16th episode of the series, "Divergence". According to Trekspy, they have three or four episodes to shoot before production winds down. Note that the season was planned to run for 22 episodes.

If confirmed, the news does not come as a great surprise. Many observers expected Enterprise to be cancelled at the end of the third season, and ratings have continued to be poor this year. The first episode of the new year, "Daedalus", only brought in a meagre 1.9/3 share (meaning that only 1.9% of households with TVs were estimated to have tuned in).

Agreed. If the rest of this season holds up, it'll be something like...

Season 4 > Season 3 > (Season 1 + Season 2)

I used to watch every episode of Voyager and Deep Space 9. But for some reason, I never got into Enterprise. It just wasn't as fun. Let's hope they come back with some good idea's for the next Star Trek TV series.

Season 3 and 4 were two major course changes. It seems like a Trek series without much focus.

I remember trying to get into it a few times. But I had missed a bunch of episodes and the episodes seemed so interconnected that it was impossible to get into since I had missed so much. I never felt that way with Voyager or Deep Space 9. It was a big dissapointment because I always like to watch good star-trek.

The only reason it was even renewed for this season was so they'd have enough episodes to be able to sell it into syndication. If they'd already had enough episodes this season would have never happened anyway.

On the television front, while the future of their first series remains in limbo, Berman confirms that he is developing a non-STAR TREK sci-fi series with partner Brannon Braga. Both Berman and Braga have development deals with Paramount. If a new series begins development in earnest, TrekWeb insiders suggest Berman and/or Braga might take a reduced role in a fourth season of ENTERPRISE, though this is entirely speculation.

I don't know about considering anything a prequel at this point... They've established hundreds of years of history; why rule out earlier periods? Whether it's good or bad will have so much more to do with who's behind it and whether they're on a roll or in a rut.

As for that bit you quoted: must be pretty old, considering it talks about the fourth season as being only a possibility. However, that reduced role has come to pass. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread Manny Coto has been a big positive influence this season.

It's been a while sinced I watched that show (since the series ended, actually) but I recently started watching it again on Spike, and I was amazed by how much better it was than the newer Trek shows.

Well, it was more like 1-2 months, and many shows ease off around Christmas... but yeah, that sucked.

Not everything they did was bad... Braga in particular looking at IMDB had a number of awesome TNG episodes to his name. However, they've certainly been the head honchos during some extended low points.

First Contact is up there with Wrath of Khan. I can watch those over and over again an infinite number of times. I'm not a generations fan however. In fact I have a level of loathing for that movie

Yep, it's a good movie. Kind of surprising that it was actually directed by Jonathan Frakes...

Script, budget and casting matters more in Trek. I have trouble seeing how the different episodes are directed by different people. It seems like there is a Trek-style directing imposed or something.

Script is by far the most important thing. If the plot is stupid or doesn't fit well as a Trek movie, it doesn't matter about the rest - it will suck all the same (look at you Insurrection).

Yeah, First Contact and The Wrath of Khan are definitely the best ST movies. Out of the more recent movies I also enjoyed Generations and Nemesis though Insurrection was like the worst movie ever.

I think Brandon Braga said on the Generations DVD commentary that they should have made All Good Things the first TNG movie instead of Generations, and I must say that I agree. That was so much better story...

He wrote them both by the way, and he also did some of the best Star Trek episodes ever. He has also done some weak episodes, but he still gets way too much hate.

Rick Berman on the other hand doesn't seem to be as good writer...
