I think we can call it early in saying that this is probably the best show of the season. I'm ususally not one for plots like these because I find the story and characters really boring. I find the first episode it to have a semi droll tone but in a good way that helped set up our main character. It really does feel like he's kind of bored with his life. It sucks that the mother died, she was a really interesting character. I'm kind of interested in seeing what happens after he turns into a kid again. (I assumed that's what happened.) Will he stay a kid permanently, or will he be able to solve the case in the second or third episode and go back to his life as an adult?

I know they're going to cut several chapter from the manga, since even i think those chapter was not really needed. So yeah, good job on the director/script writer for trimming the fat. As far as adaptation goes, it's pretty solid, especially the voice acting.

I'm probably never going to stop singing his praises until he writes a total dud, but I just love pointing out that the guy writing this adaptation is the same person who did a fantastic job on the Bunny Drop anime, as well as Silver Spoon and Haikyu. He's really good at adaptations, especially in the character department.

That's good to know.

Bunny Drop anime, we all know the ending is perfect as it is.

I remember that Silver Spoon anime fix some plot hole and also add additional scene that flesh out Hachiken and Butadon relationship.

I guess this adaptation is in a good hand.

Really liked this despite the heavy use of monologue. The episode does a great job of laying out the rules of the 'game' and the lead character. While there might be further restrictions or complications such as time skips between multiple eras, the show establishes the limitations of his ability and what triggers it. The show does a good job of setting up Satoru as an individual and I like the VA choice as it helps depict a bored and boring normal person. There are also a lot of visual cues in the 'Revivals' which I hope keeps up, so any sort of twist doesn't feel cheap. The direction feels surprisingly mature and somber and I know people were bagging on Kajiura but I like the OST so far as it reminds me more of that grandiose flair in Fate/Zero than her sub-par work in SAO (despite them being so similar).

In some ways, this feels like a more interesting take on the whole Detective Conan premise. Satoru has to solve a multiple homicide and make people listen to him while in the body of a child. Him being a normal person and the 'Revival' aspect have the potential for a lot of fun with possible Dead Ends.
That said, the framing aspect is really weak and totally unnecessary.
Any basic detective is going to realize Satoru was at work and that due to the timeframe of his mother's death, he couldn't possibly have been involved. Not to mention other rudimentary elements such as motive. I understand it gives him more of an incentive to solve the case but his mother's death should have been enough of an impetus and so this feels like overkill.
Changing the aspect ratio with the jump back felt more deserved than in other shows as it visually represents Satoru's limited viewpoint and perspective compared to when he was 29. It feels claustrophobic which is how I imagine any adult would feel when being shoved back into their 9 or 10 year old form. There was also some fun with the editing in the first half with the use of quick cuts to joke about Satoru being a dour person.
Things like having the Revival being initially done with the film effect on the trim make it easier for the audience to understand exactly what is happening in that it's like a film being rewound and works as a visual training wheel if you will. It's also kinda humorous that the thing that symbolizes the Revival is a butterfly with the whole Butterfly effect, which I'm sure was intentional. I liked how they used sports to refer to the timeframe such as the 06' World Cup and the '88 Ice Hockey team.

Liked this shot as there are multiple things restraining Satoru visually such as the walls, his bed, the junk around him, and the light. I guess it could represent how his regret is holding him back.
Wish more anime was like this.

Duckie linked something in the Anime OT that said the tv show would end with the manga's ending, so it's either that it'll end in time or he's pulling a Game of Thrones.

I thought the duckroll cycle only applies to BONES.

Lol, I linked it in post #48

Director Tomohiko Ito posted on the official Twitter account of the ERASED (Boku dake ga Inai Machi) anime on Thursday that the show will portray the original manga's ending, although the manga has not yet ended. The anime is listed with 12 episodes, and is slated to end on March 24. The May issue of Kadokawa's Young Ace magazine (where the manga is serialized) is slated for March 4.

They didn't show him getting framed though. The police only asked Satoru to come to the station with them, after which he panicked, runs away and suddenly travels back in time. It's possible that the police will realize that he couldn't have done it as soon as the anime gets back to present day.

The intention and the scene itself was clearly for
him being framed considering the fedora guy called the cops and him running making him look more guilty. The show might jump back to the present day with him being interrogated or in police custody.

It might not end up mattering at all but it felt too much in that particular scene.

Hey, I really liked this. It was intruiging and the overall quality made this something that was fun to look at. Even if there was a lot of dialouge I was engaged the whole time, which can only be a good thing.

Looking forward as to how all of this is going to develop!

Hope the funky lips don't appear on new characters though, it looked kinda odd.

Wouldn't he just try to prevent it whenever he get's around to being his normal, 29 year old self? I might be misunderstanding his powers but it kinda seems to me that the show won't jump back to the normal time unless it's the very end of the show.

fuck this, episode aired already so no more spoiler tags for it.

The episode made it seem he doesn't return to the original timeline after he has the effect. He sees the butterfly (hurr hurr butterfly effect), he then jumps back in time and changes whatever is supposed to be changed which creates a new timeline where that bad thing didn't happen. But the jump was usually a few minutes vs years.

Considering we've only seen 1 episode and he has never done this considering his surprise, there's no way in hell we could even begin to assume what will happen. It could go a variety of ways.

1. He could be forced to relive this new timeline at a normal pace.

2. He could jump back to the equivalent of the present time in this new timeline.

3. For all we know he fails in rescuing her, and keeps jumping back in time once he discovers how to do it to correct the timeline.

I gotta say that considering they've introduced and put that much effort into the school girl character who seems to have a crush on him (?), they'll likely keep returning to this timeline. And for the sake of drama he'll awake in the jail cell, get released once it's clear he couldn't have done it, he gets fired because of the drama, and he now has to deal with time jumping back and forth to try and solve the murder of then to prevent the murder of his mom.

Personally I'd go for theory one, maybe with a bit of theory 3 if things go south ;P

He just get's rolled back into time and gets another shot at doing it correctly with knowledge of what's to come. Kinda like he's erasing (heh) the future so het can rewrite it again.

Maybe the school girl character is just there as a contrast that served to set the main character up as someone who's introverted. I guess in the past the MC will learn the power of friendship resulting in an ending where he's able to talk normally with the school girl?

That's just a theory though ;P. Wonder which girl MC will end up with if that's the case. The one he has to save or the pizza girl. If I had to guess it would be the former but who knows.

I really don't want the show to mainly take place in the past. Two timelines are better in this case. We haven't seen anything with him as a kid, but I can't really think that the show will be as interesting if he's a kid-detective all the time. I guess that's the premise, but still they can make it a lot more interesting. The school girl doesn't seem like just a contrast to him or a fake out, so I hope that they'll really do that.

Also, the 29 yo MC was really enjoyable, it's a shame if we barely see him.

Well, that episode 1 magic is definitely there. Impressive start.
All-around top notch, with a special mention to visual cues.
Then again, SAO had an impressive start too.

Second-best première episode of the season.

Thoroughly enjoyed the first episode despite some weak spots.

Wait, what's the best?

Different author than SAO, so.....

This was the best one, lol.

Episode 1

Really solid opening episode. I don't think the series will be able to retain a good balance of mystery and time-travel/reversal at least consistently, but I like the ideas demonstrated so far and I hope it proves me wrong. I think the characters are all interesting but not unique, and the suspense will probably build up around the relationships they hold. I'm looking forward to episode 2, but not getting carried away just yet.

I had to stop at 20 mins. Are all episodes going to be 50 mins, or just that first one?

I think it's just the first one episode since it had to summarize the two OVA's (~90 mins) that were released prior to this airing. Seems like the other episodes will just be the normal format but I guess we'll have to wait for it to air to be 100% sure. I wouldn't mind it though.

An ANN network article said that the first episode would be a special so that also points toward them resuming the normal format in future episodes I guess?

I had to stop at 20 mins.

Do fully finish the first episode though, unless it's not your cup of tea I guess. This is probably going to be one of the better anime of the season (this or Erased will probably be AOTS).

Erased 2

That was absolutely stellar. After its great start, the show is getting even better. I was rather afraid that it wouldn't live up to the premiere episode, but even though it didn't really focus on mystery this time, it delivered an amazing episode. I can easily say that as I'm already feeling so many emotions watching this, despite still being far from telling a complete story.

About Hinazuki...I was kind of shocked that they decided to give her family abuse background. If there's a kidnapper, it seems that she would easily go with him if it meant to escape from this. I have to say that the images of her bruises and that skin with the abuse were hard to watch, they really did a perfect job with making this strong. Anywhere, other than that, I really like how mature she seems, I guess this is normal based on her experience though. She is really cold, but I guess she will start to warm up. I can't wait for this, I really liked her.

About the protagonist...I'm really happy that they didn't go straight to 'kid detective" stuff. The scene when his mother was back was really heart-warming, his smile really says everything. The scene with Hinazuki was really the best part of the episode though. When she talked about fakes, I loved the way he changed his voice and appearance, matching his cynical older self. Both the kid and the adult voice actor are doing an amazing job, so I'm really glad there are so many instances to hear both of them.

Overall, I was really impressed with this. They're doing a great job and, it seems the show can be good even if they're not planning to return to the present until the climax. I doubt that this is the case though, as the Airi girl seems to be important and, as she isn't in this timeline, there's bound to be more with her in the present. In any case, I really like how this progresses so far, but I'm really afraid of what will follow considering how dark future is.

Oh, I also loved the OP. They did a great job, both for the visuals and the music.

Oh wow, Is it bad to say I like the first two episodes better than anything else from this season or last season already? I mean, this was good; real good. The ambiance of the bg music, as well as the sound effects, plus the OP and ED are all top notch. I was surprised I even picked up on some of the subtle sybolism shown during the episode; especially at the one where they showed him taking that abnormally large step towards her in the park, as if to state he was fully commited to her welfare and his mission devoted to save her; great use of camera work there. They are doing a great job with this so far. Excellent, excellent, excellent..

It's only bad to say that if you haven't seen Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju.

Very much looking forward to episode 2, hope to catch it later today!

That 50 min episode though!

I watched half so far, but have to finish. I find it hard to believe it will grasp my attention more than this show has though.

They've VERY different, but they're absolutely the two front-runners this season. Nothing else is close as far as new series go. Episode 2 was great, I love that they're letterboxing the past segments.

2/2 so far. If it keeps this quality after 4 episodes then AOTS easily.

Erased 02

Unlike the title, my hopes for the show remain firm. Fantastic second episode, and honestly the show being based off a socially inept/introvert kid trying his hardest to pretend to be extroverted hits home as that's the story of my life haha. Even if it remains in the children years I'll love the shit out of it tbh, the mood dialogue and narration by the lead has been on point. Guy's first voice acting role right? He's doing a phenomenal job.

They have absolutely nailed the ambiance for this show so far. I just can't say it enough.

Yeah, it has a sort of dialed back tone to it, somber if you will. As a result it feels more serious than if it were handled in a more stylized manner with wackier/exaggerated characters and mood one might initially come to expect from watching other shows that attempt to tackle similar events.

Episode 2

Great direction, really nice subtle character animation, strong color design, Kajuira's soundtrack is subdued but very effective, and solid writing. This is exactly the sort of stuff I felt we've been lacking in terms of mystery anime. Something that takes tone, character, and setting seriously, but also having a mystery that's just unusual enough to tease the imagination.

I really like how the writing places emphasis on developing the setting to create the atmosphere the characters inhabit rather than just having mystery hooks. When clues pop, they don't just connect dots for the viewer, but they inform us something about the characters, their personalities, and the time period. Satoru's monologues also do a good job of bridging his frame of mind then and now, as a form of retrospective analysis. This show is super interesting. Hope it doesn't go south!

Decided to watch the first two episodes after seeing this thread.

End of episode 1 had me hooked right away. Will keep up with this for sure.

Watched episode 2 last night. Show of the season for sure. That's not saying too much because this season is kinda trash thus far, but Erased really is great so far... I promise!

episode 2

It didn't feel I was watching some average anime made by A-1 Pictures. Looks like they really cared about producing this adaptation.

Kinda reminds me of <-------------------------. well, first episodes of that look really good too :(
hope this doesn't turn south like that.
