Escape from New York remake not dead, Plissken role down to three actors

Fallout from the 50 shades of grey possibilities.

I don't understand the point of remaking perfection.

Guys, let's remake the Mona Lisa and pretend it can be nearly as good or significant as the original.

I dunno, I prefer that to the other likelihood. A thinly disguised remake with characters you don't care about and a plot that's not as good.

I'll allow it. Escape from NY was a pretty damn cheesy flick so a re-make really could improve upon it.

Generally, I hate remakes. But if the original is flawed and the concept really could be done better . . . then go for it.

Edit: Don't make a re-make of Escape from LA . . . that was hopelessly bad.

If someone asked me what you thought speculawyer would say in a thread about a EFNY remake, that is just about word-for-word what I would have guessed. I think we are polar opposites. haha.

Back on topic - You can remake the story 10x over, but you wont top it. There is no one alive that could top Lee Van Cleef in that role before even bringing Kurt into the equation. The high speed anamorphics with that crazy single coating and the color cast from the florescent lights on that film stock. John Carpenter's amazing synth score with the ARP Quadra, I could go on, but I give up.

A remake would be another souless, bland CGI-fest like the remakes of Robocop and Total Recall.

Karl Urban would make a great Plissken, though I'm sure there are a few other actors that could work. I think nailing the direction is the trickier bit, especially with that awful sounding synopsis.

How is Karl Urban not immediately cast? Dude doesn't even have to audition, for fucks sake.

Hollywood, you idiots.

WHY IS THIS HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPPENING?!?!

LEEEEEEEEEEE VAN CLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEF IS TOO DEAD TO BE IN IT.

THIS SHOULDN'T HAPPEN.

get Joe Manganiello to do it

Dudes from my hometown. Friends of mine who have worked with him inside the film industry, and those who knew him before he left town said he's a doucher. Kinda a bummer.

Kurt Russell is a hard act to follow.

I mean, he's somehow the one of the baddest of badasses to ever appear on a movie screen - and yet, with his luscious locks of hair and piercing baby blues, he's also a goddamn beautiful man.

The Russ is one of a kind, man. One of a kind.

Yup, can't think of anyone else who compares at the moment.

Why? What's the point? Escape from New York is a true cultural icon. It was perfect for what it was. Trying to remake it is... what are you remaking? The tickets to the theater?

Yeah he's legit shittier than the kick ass guy and Taylor kitsch

I can't believe he's getting so much shit all of a sudden

Gotta say he was terrible quite few times in Pacific Rim. That was only one movie tough.
He does look wrong for this for sure.
Also, Taylor Kitsch was great in John Carter. Can`t believe how much that movie bombed. :(

This is the first time I'm hearing about this. It will not top Carpenter's original, which remains one of my all-time favorites, and a movie I re-watch probably once a year.

I just hope it will be solid enough and doesn't shit all over its legacy in the process.

Will they be able to somehow use the original theme??

How would it possibly make any sense now?

It was made when NY was a filthy crime-riddled cesspool, and played on a future version of that. Obviously not a realistic film, but how do you make a scary future NY now? Zombie hipsters and dangerous gangs of high house prices?

Earthquake or some random disaster cuts NY off from the rest of the world [because logic], anarchy reigns and crime takes over everyday life while people struggle to survive.

Done and done.

However, they should take a look at Ubisoft's The Division and just go full viral outbreak cuts down society, bringing it to its knees. Gangs run rampant looking for supplies while normal citizens join to survive or resist and die. No zombies. NY gets walled off/quarantined.

Aw yeah, I should write for Hollywood.

But we already got Purge: Anarchy, which was basically a Punisher + Escape from NY movie. It had a bunch of Carpenter in it. Like, even had a synth score! And that was pretty damn good.

Damn it, want to watch it again.

They can remake it all they want. I sure as hell won't be watching it, the original is a classic and shouldn't be touched imo.

The post apocalyptic movie Doomsday from 2008 was a loose remake. It even had a female lead GAF! She had one eye and everything! It was basically a 2 hour car advertisement though...

Is this related to Metal Gear universe at all? Or is Snake Plissken just a copy and pasted character?

"Much as Metal Gear began as a pastiche of action movies of the time, Solid Snake began as a pastiche of contemporary action movie heroes. For example, on the cover artwork of the original Metal Gear, he resembles the Michael Biehn incarnation of Kyle Reese in The Terminator, and the in-game portrait of Snake in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake resembles Mel Gibson in the game's opening sequence.[52] Solid Snake was even named after another fictional special forces operative: Snake Plissken, Kurt Russell's character in Escape from New York.[53][54] In Guns of the Patriots, Snake is modeled after Lee Van Cleef, who appeared in Escape from New York.[55] His real name, David,[56][57] is a tribute to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey that has a character with the same name.[58] Kojima later described Snake's role in the original Metal Gear as the "player's presence", contrasting the defined personality Solid Snake acquired in Metal Gear Solid."

They should just not remake it.

This. The character is too synonymous with Russell for me to cast anyone else. Just do a true sequel with old ass Kurt as Snake, otherwise I don't see the point. I honestly sorta feel the same way with Indiana Jones. It'll be interesting to see what Disney does with that.

You're not going to replace Lee Van Cleef. You're not going to replace Kurt Russell. You're not going to replace Ernest Borgnine. You're not going to replace Donald Pleasance. You're not going to replace Adrienne Barbeau. And you're not going to replace Isaac Hayes.

So why even bother?

A jarring dearth of new ideas in Hollywood.

This. Frank Grillo had great screen presence in the Purge: Anarchy, as well as in the Winter Soldier. He's 51 yrs old but doesnt look it.

If Carpenter were around today, Grillo would fit right in. Tough, commanding, credible physically, cool under pressure, guy is a legit action star if he gets enough roles. Hope others in Hollywood take note.

I think Dan Stevens would be the most interesting choice. If you're going to remake, you need someone compelling, but markedly DIFFERENT from Kurt Russell. Stevens looks like he could give you an interesting new vibe, while Hunnam and Bernthal would be good, but a little more standard.

Escape From New York should never feel STANDARD. I like this Stevens guy. Maybe redefine what Plissken can be just a little bit, as opposed to getting actors to do Kurt Russell cosplay.
