Essential PS2 Import Games?

I like games where you shoot shit, and I like games where you drive shit.

Sometimes when the two combine it's good, but it's a tossup.

So what's good on the PS2 import scene? Stuff that most likely won't come here, and that's non-Japanese friendly, preferably.

I'm fairly interested in that Simple 2000 game that has soldiers (one male, one female with jetpack) with awesome guns fighting Godzilla sized monsters that was whored out here a while back, but can't recall the title. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I think that was Earth Defense Force 1 or 2.

That's the JP title, correct?

Yeah, pretty cheap at play asia. Link

Also, Raiden III looks pretty good if you like shooters (haven't personally played it, but heard good impressions). Probably won't come to the US, pricey though right now.

I've heard some bad things about Raiden III from shuri, so I'll hold off on that. I loved the first two, though. But hell, as for shmups, I only really even like R-Type and Raiden--the rest of 'em don't really grab me. Doubly so for those tiny hitbox Cave games. :-|

Looks like I've got Rez and EDF2 on my christmas list to go along with ye olde fliptop, tho. :D

Hmm, how about the Ys 1 and 2 collection they have over there? I'm thinking of picking that up myself for my import PS2.

And man, how could you NOT like ESPGaluda?

EDF2 is possibly my GOTY 2005.

Also, if you've got the cash,

Do it. Don't look back.

Heh, nah, I just got 10th. It's an old pic.

Third's awesome, but 4th might be my least favorite. Or 5th.

I was wondering how are Pop n Music and Sinobido Imashime, from what I have seen they look great.

Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princess is an awesome 2 player versus shmup.

Lots are saying that the US version is going to be pretty bad, but, eh, it looks decent to me. The controllers will be nice, though, and I might end up picking one/two up.

Pop'n Music is cool. I'm not as fond of it as IIDX, mostly because of the music and scoring, but tons swear by it. Really nice standard controller, too.

wtf?

Wouldn't it be essentially the same? :p

How was this, anyways?

Another generic Tales game...or is it a bit different (as Legendia is right now)?

It's the best Tales game IMO. Fantastic battle system, most people don't like the story, but I thought it was decent. Definately better than Legendia.

The game? It's looking like some wierd mix of ancient 5key (which many that have played IIDX wouldn't want to touch) and IIDX. I mean, I'd buy it.

The controller? It's redesigned, supposedly they're trying to eliminate the sticking keys problem. If so, I'm on it.

Well, I'd believe that the battle system is better than Legendia (which is too simple)...but the story telling (which still isn't particularly amazing) is leagues ahead of every other Tales game (and features awesome VA work) and, of course, the soundtrack makes a big difference...

How does it compare, gameplay wise, to Symphonia, Phantasia, or Eternia (the other three that I'm familiar with)?

Taito Memories 2 and Otostaz are the only nonshooter things I'd recommend so far (but Taito 2's strongest point to me is the slowdown-free G Darius, so).

Yeah, uh, no RPG recommendations please. As they'd be JP text heavy and I don't especially like the genre. ;)

No Cave shooters and no RPGs, right? Sorry I guess I can't help ya then!

But seriously, have you tried ESPGaluda? It's phenominal... you get used to the tiny hitbox and learn to love it... I have trouble going back to older shooters at times.

I agree that Raiden III isn't so hot; something about just didn't grab me like Raiden and Raiden II did. I ended up selling the game off and getting Raiden Project for the PSX instead. Try to go after some of the Cave shooters if you want a good challenging shooter. I got Mushihimesama recently, and that's been pretty fun.

I picked up that EDF Simple Series volume 81 game a week or so ago, and while it actually is fun (for once; the simple games usually suck so bad), the frame rate really incredibly bad. Don't expect much from the game and you'll be okay. I paid about $15 for it, and I'm not sure I'd pay more to import it.

There really aren't many import-only racing games I can think of worth getting. I found Initial D to be a let-down; the arcade version is great, but the home version isn't the best port, and it's lacking a two-player mode for some stupid reason. Namco recently released a free-roaming Chase HQ-style driving game called Critical Velocity, but it just seemed average to me. Sold it off too.

Also if you want to go into some other genres, there are still some fighting games out there, like The Rumblefish, Vampire Collection, and Garou MOTW, that aren't coming out over here. Neo-Geo Battle Colliseum is also hitting the PS2 in a few week, and it's likely not going to see a U.S. PS2 release.

Two more recent releases I got were Shinobido (there was a small thread made on it already) and Ikusagami, which is a Dynasty Warriors-style action game in which you kill hundreds of on-screen characters at one time. I still need to play a lot more it to see if really deserves a recommendation, however.

I don't think Gundam: One Year War has been mentioned yet. Play-Asia has it for less than $20, and it's a fantastic 3rd person shooter.

Is it like Federation Vs. Zeon? Might have to pick it up then. :) There's this Gundam Seed game that's pretty popular in arcades and on PS2 here that plays like Federation Vs. Zeon does, too.

Only is the most basic sense. It's developed by Namco's Ace Combat team, and it sold so well it prompted Bandai to buy Namco.

Do you have a picture of the box? I'd like to hunt this one down now; Super Monkey Ball DS needs to go anyway.

EDIT: I see now; Namco did One-Year War and Capcom did the new SEED game.

"Normal" mode is pretty easy, but "Hard" is a decent challenge, and Namco has inserted all of the "extra" suits that never appeared in the show (ie, the Action Zaku, Perfect Zeong, Kampfer, etc) but were supposed to exist in 0079.

I saw a narutard (headband and all) at the campus foodcourt. I was sitting around with a friend, waiting for my pizza. It was taking forever for a single slice, and pretty soon, I noticed that the narutard got his pizza before me despite ordering after. So, I say to my friend "Hah, the Narutard got his food before me."

That was when I noticed the mentally disabled guy waiting in line.

To this day, I wonder how loud I was.

For the love of all that's holy, DON'T GET SAINT SEIYA! It's a C list fighter with animation worse than Toshinden, horrible horrible graphics and move lists with 10+ moves. 2/10 in my review.

Avoid Raiden 3, booooooring

If you're a shooter stud of the first order, Dodonpachi Daioujou is sweeet, however, it is _really_ fucking hard. Really, REALLY fucking hard.

ESP Galuda however, is really, really fun :D Great music, not nearly as painful as DDP-DOJ

I'd give Galuda a buy if you enjoy shooters

But it's Saint Seiya...

I didn't like the newest ps2 dodonpachi. Seems like a step down from the original in every way unfortunately :(

It takes a wee bit of time to get into, but DDP-DOJ has its charms. Let me second EDF2, too. It's Sandlot at the top of their form.

Also, check out The Rumble Fish, it's a great little 2d fighter by some Ex-SNK people.

Sounds great and PA consumers have given it rave ratings. At $12.90 I couldn't resist. Bought! Thanks for the tip :)

How do you get imports working on a US PS2? I have an Action Replay Max Evo, I have HDLoader...and for the life of me I can *NEVER* get any import disc to work on my PS2...whether it be a UK DVD that fails to work in Action Replay's "REGION X" multi-region DVD player or EDF2...my PS2 always just farts out an error message along the line of "Hey, that's not even a disc you put in me, try putting a REAL CD or DVD in next time"

I use the hdloader. I transfer my imports to the ps2 hd using a pc and my original import disk (using hdldump or winhiip, depending on my mood), and then i just replug it. HDLOADER wont tranfers disks from a different region, but you can bypass transfering that by using your pc to transfer them

The problem with hdloader is that its not 100% compatible :| but it's a fact of life. I'll probably invest in a real modchip one day
