President of the European Council Donald Tusk:
Mission accomplished! Just agreed with PM @JustinTrudeau to hold EU-Canada Summit this Sunday
https://twitter.com/eucopresident/status/792113909708754944

Tusk's spokesperson adds:
EU-Canada summit in Brussels on Sunday at 10h30. Signing ceremony for #CETA and SPA at 12h00. And press conference.

It follows on the heels of the approval of CETA by all EU member states half an hour or so ago:
"I am delighted to confirm that the EU is ready to sign the comprehensive economic and trade agreement with Canada. It represents a milestone in the EU's trade policy and our commitment to it" said Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia, currently holding the EU Council presidency. "The CETA represents a modern and progressive deal, opening the door to new opportunities, while protecting important interests. Moreover, it has the potential to set the way forward for future trade deals."

Good job Canada! For all those involved from our current Prime Minister, ministers, to our previous PM and to all the Provinces too who made Canada go forward in a non-partisan fashion

EU: Good Canada, now finish him.
*UK looks at the EU, EU looks away*
Canada: I must not...
EU: DEW IT!
*Canada execute UK by beheading*

So the story of Canada Skywalker has closed and the story of Darth Maple Syrup has begun.

As a Canadian, thank you for this XD

So the UK is gonna have free trade with Canada for the next two years and then spend another 5-10 years negotiating for a new trade deal?

Sounds like a well thought out strategy.

TTIP gets bashed to hell, But everyone seems to love this? I know that they're probably different posters and all, but the difference in general sentiment is still kind of weird to me.

Yeah. This trade agreement seems to have investment protection chapter too. Can anyone who know better than me tell how this investment protection is different from TTIP?

Looking at this agreement more, it's definitely got some red flags, but it's gonna have to be a wait and see thing from me. There were some things added into it in early 2016 relating to appeals that I can't quite wrap my head around, so for those making opinions, it might be worth the time to see what changes have happened since the original 2014 drafting.

Overall, donno. Since the US isn't involved I'm less nervous of companies butt-fucking countries but I still don't know

Despite the general similarity of the two agreements there is a major difference in the domain of standards. While the exact rules are rather complex and detailed and also differ for different types of NTMs, the main difference is that in CETA the standards of the importer country will prevail, while TTIP strives for mutual recognition of standards. Irrespective of the comprehensive tariff reduction and elimination, generally CETA does not eliminate the differences in standards. Imports still need to comply with the rules and regulations that the product in question needs to satisfy on the respective import market (technical, sanitary or phytosanitary rules for the security and the protection of the consumer, the user or the environment, including notably food safety and labelling requirements). There are several procedural improvements (e.g. regarding ‘Technical Barriers to Trade’, TBTs) making it easier for an EU exporter to obtain the required certification for the Canadian market (and vice versa) that obviously lower trade costs but Canadians standards have to be obeyed (and vice versa). Hence, many of the sensitive issues debated in TTIP remain untouched by CETA.

The situation regarding standards is entirely different in TTIP as the US insists on ‘regulatory cooperation’ which may mean harmonisation of standards or mutual recognition of standards. Mutual recognition of standards means that a product admitted to the US market may also be sold anywhere in the EU (and vice versa) or a body needs to decide on the applied standards. While harmonisation or mutual recognition of standards will entail the largest trade effects, it is therefore here where most risks, be it environmental or health-related) for consumers may arise.

Seems like the only real difference

As for the big difference in reaction in this thread, well, I wouldn't be surprised if that is somewhat a result of the different views of the United States and Canada that people have.

Free trade is garbage. There is nothing wrong with tariffs.

I think its too late to go back to protectionism, the global economy is here, those who embrace it will grow at exponential rates as they Covet a larger market.

Even if we want to, you can never go back.

Now that is deal is done, the Minister can focus on CANZUK.

This is the first I've heard of this, but I haven't been following our politics a lot lately.

Fake edit: Actually I do remember reading about this somewhere. Either way I'll probably look for a breakdown of what this might mean for us (Canada)

I never understood the demonization of trade deals. They boost the economy in many ways. It will require some jobs to transition or evolve though.

Fucking finally, I hope this will help when it comes to shitty prices for dairy products that we have here.

Sounds great but I don't know what it means at all really.

Canadian dairy farmers are pissed off about this deal, that alone is reason to like it.

Awesome. Our milk, butter and cheese prices are criminal.

High or low?

Over here I can get 1 liter of milk for 0,42€. I almost feel dirty buying it.

Our milk is supplied managed to the point where it is cheaper for pizza companies to order 'pizza kits' from the US and throw out all the ingredients except for the cheese instead of buying local Canadian cheese...

edit: Granted, this was also when the dollar was near parity, so it may not be as true now.

the bagged milk cartel has been pierced

high dairy prices are artificially high in Ontatio and Quebec,
Europeans (especially in the South) pay about 4x less for their milk than us

Next step is to open up Telcom to international competition. The current oligopoly needs to end.
this !

i went to Portugal with an unlocked phone, got 100 minutes, 100 text msg, 10GB data prepaid SIM card for 10 euros (MEO)

our Canadian telecoms need to be shaken up
