Is that why no one outside of Japan is gonna play it? :o

Compared to how it did before, VF4 did fairly well when it came to the PS2. Most fighters are selling pretty poorly now anyways aren't they? I don't have sales figures stored on my HD like many on GAF. I remember everyone hating the series when it was just on SEGA consoles. I used to be one of the few fans of the VF series on many gaming forums arguing it's merits. But it came to the PS2 and a lot of people opened up to it. Now a lot of people tend to think it's the better fighter (with the SF series of course) ...I said a lot, not all but I think the PS2 helped make it popular and if VF5 comes home as well as VF4 did, I can see it selling well on the PS3 or 360 or whatever.

Not only do normal people wear those kinds of clothes...
but as I'm typing this I'm also totally mistaking that screenshot for a photograph.

Looks like shit, sorry. I'm not feeling the coating of Extra Virgin Olive Oil on everything.

All I ask for in a next-gen fighter is Fight Night Round 3 character models + DOA 4 environments.

Is that so hard, really?

It's like AM2 said fuck innovating the series, we can put all our efforts on perfecting shadows and lighting our generic oily character models :lol

The pastic look isnt that bad here since the characters pack a ton of detail. It looks like CG afew years back. Unlike most other games that have plastic looking charcters and try to pack in too much detail for the poly count etc.

Your avatar has rendered me stupid

It's not like shiny people are new to the genre. Hell, it's practically a requirement when you're showcasing new hardware:

Sega really shouldn't have added Rey Mysterio to the game (or whatever his name is). All the vids where I've seen him in action look like shit. His movements are stiff, unnatural, and seem way out of place for VF. Jeffrey and Wolf work 'cuz they don't have moves where they pretend to bounce off ropes.

Cause the game is not even nearly close to being finished.... believe me as you well, let's just say there will be a blowout on VF5 in a certain gaming *** in *****. Just prepare yourselves.

I think these screenshots look like shit and I can only assume the people praising them are huge fans of the series. They look laughably bad, in my opinion. I'm reminded of people praising the hideous PDZ graphics (whose ugly environments look quite similar to the ugly enviornments shown here).

I can understand the people who say the game looks great in motion (I haven't seen it), but the screenshots are AWFUL (with the exception of one or two). The character models and lighting are nice but the shots as a whole are just bad.

If you told me that this shot featured 2 VF5 character models pasted on top of a crappy 1990s pre-rendered game I'd believe you.

(and no, I'm not a DOA fan)

Shots look great, but I'm not diggin' the "glossy" look. Seems limited to certain fabrics, and skin, which could be ok, but I'd really like to hear from someone who saw it in person what they thought about this.

Really liked these pics:

Is that a March issue that comes out in February, or an April issue that comes out in March?

Can't wait to see what the people who don't actually play fighting games have to say about whatever new media is released!

All the people complaining about the "plastic" look, GET OVER IT. Normal mapping tends to do that in screenshots. It'll look great in motion.

I'm all over the place with VF5 screens. Sometimes they look really great and other times, not quite so good.

I do have to say that even with the keeping the action in a ring, it'd be nice to have some more exciting stage design. Or maybe SCIII has spoiled me.

Now release some goddamn direct feed vids already Sega.

Doesn't look that impressive in screens but supposedly it does in motion. Why don't they want to show it in all its glory is beyond me.

The shit you all complain about. Bottom line is that the game is gonna play better than anything else out.

One is a wrestler, and the other is a lucha libre fighter.

Yep, you're still a dumbass.

In any case, these shots are pretty unflattering. WTF Sega, bring some HD pics.

No offense but who the fuck cares about a VF5 blowout in a magazine? I want to see this bitch in MOTION, and in a decent direct-feed video.

cause a magazine will tell us a bunch about new gameplay

I'm mildly impressed. It looks good, not great, not amazing. VF has always had issues in the art/character department.

But I'm probably not worthy of comment, since I likely will never play this game. Too boring.

To be fair, what's the rush? Sega isn't making this for their own system, and they haven't said word one about a home version yet. I'm sure the videos will appear in time, but they haven't shown all the stages yet, or shown much with the other new character. And the game won't hit arcades for another four months. Frankly I'm amazed we're seeing these screens this early.

I really, really don't like this 'next gen sweat' developers seem to be tossing into gamesl...
Yeah, wow, I'm impressed you can make characters sweat now...great... but why does it mean you have to make them look like they are sweating non-stop from hundreds of 1-inch pores?

I'm going to try to end this once and for all....

The reason why VF5 kept the square rings is because... THAT'S WHAT THE JAPANESE PLAYERS WANT.

Since VF3, the majority of the Japanese players preferred the standard size ring. The uneven grounds and stage layout made it sort of unfair depending on which side you were on, and other such factors. This is why VF4 went back to the square rings of VF1 and VF2. So stop whining about lack of variety in stages, it's pretty much set in stone now with the square ring.

In terms of art/costume/look of characters, it's a tradition for VF to keep the same look for all the characters. Too bad, no skin tight jump suits with glowing hair bands. If you care about having your characters look different, then the final game will include 3 additional costumes, each of which can be heavily customized to look different. Believe me, give a few months after the game's debut, we'll be seeing all kinds of outrageous looking costumes and customized accessories on all the characters.

The game is running on high definition AND in wide screen. I thought people have seen the pictures of the actual cabinets? For what reason Sega released those pictures in weird resolutions I will have no idea.

At the last location test, the game was less than 50% done. El Blaze, especially, was completely unfinished in terms of animation. This is why one of the new characters was even not selectable. By the next location test, I'm sure there will be nothing wrong with El Blaze's animation.

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut about all the info that will come out, but like what Sp0rsk said, it's gonna have a ton of new stuff. Not only gameplay wise. If you are keeping track with VF5 info so far, you would know alot of emphasis is placed upon the new VF.net.

Thank god for suqare rings. It's like a traditional martial arts fighting platform .
I thought the idea of games though were to be fun. I like realism but not at the expense of the enjoyment level that background interactivity allows. To each his own though.

You still interact with the backgrounds

Only they are OMG square shaped

Maybe if they were trapazoids...no...CIRCLES!!! Yes, that will instantly add FUN to the games...even better...add a RHINO that you can bash opponents against over and over and over again before knocking them down a flight of stairs and riding atop of them like a surfboard!!!

Well they've figured out how to make what must be a boring franchise last for 12 years and spawn numerous knock offs. Clearly you are mistaken.

I never claimed that the game wasn't fun. Actually I've never played it.

Looking to get into the series then? I highly recommend renting or buying Virtua Fighter 4: Evo and playing the quest mode.

Trust me, you'll love it

also...be sure to check out *each* of the game's practice modes...awesome shit and you'll notice an improvement in your performance in *all* 3D fighters after just 10 minutes...not just because it's good common sense help they give but because every game takes hints from the best
