Bethesda have updated with minimum requirements of the game (Thanks -MD- for the tip)

Minimum Requirements
OS: windows 7/8.1
GPU: GTX 460 or an equivalent 1 GB VRAM card
CPU: i7 or an equivalent 4+ core processor
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 50 GB
If you meet the recommended specs, you’re in for the ideal experience. The game looks amazing with full-screen anti-aliasing, full shadow quality, motion blur, tessellation, SSAO, and 1080p visuals.

PC users can pre-order The Evil Within today on Steam — where we’ve updated the game page to account for both the minimum and recommended system requirements, or your favorite digital or physical reseller.

670 is more than two years old at this point, and 4GBs of ram is somewhat low.

Edit: To clarify I didn't mean video ram in the second part

Edit 2: Just to make it completely obvious I was talking about system memory. Many want 8.
 
Pretty steep system requirements on PC, especially for a game that's on 360/PS3. Hopefully it's a good port.


Are there any platform impressions of this game yet?
 
That extra 10GB of storage drive space coupled with the 4GB reccomended VRAM leads me to think it might have really high res textures on PC.
Just read the extra bit at the bottom and now I'm not so sure.

I shouldn't have bought a GTX 770 2GB. People said that it would be enough for the upcoming games, but it seems it isn't the case. More and more games are requiring 3 or 4 GBs of VRAM.
 
So... if my PC was able to run Dark Souls 2 and Resident Evil 6 on decent settings, is it safe to assume that this will work as well?
 
Wolfenstein TNO could run on I5s without issues.

I would not expect such a game to require an I7 even for max settings. The 670 mention also raises an eyebrow but system requirements were bound to inflate regardless.

It is "fine" but you will hit the ceiling much sooner than you think.

It's a reccomendation, not a requirement to play the game.
 
I knew people who insisted that you wouldn't need more than 2 GB of VRAM for 1080p were nuts.

It's the models, shadow maps, textures, light maps, and everything else that takes up the space, not just the frame buffer.

The reason you never needed more two years ago was that everything was designed for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Not at all, both of those are DX9 games with very low system requirements. Evil Within is a DX11 game and Wolfenstein was somewhat demanding.

I had no trouble running Wolfenstein TNO at decently high settings with my GTX-670 2GB so I don't suspect this will be a problem either.

Well, the game is cross gen so I'm sure 2 Gig will be plenty. Rage benefitted from 3 Gigs of VRAM, but it was more about how much of the megatexture you could have in your memory at once. This will likely just mean less visible texture popping.

There's no way a 2 gig card won't run the game comfortably.

But I am completely fine with these recommended specs, since I hit them all comfortably. I knew this would be a great time to upgrade :)

idtech5 uses "megatexturing" which doesn't mean the textures are high resolution so much as they're unique.

When you have to load in tons of unique textures instead of cloning in repeating ones, your game size balloons up astronomically.
 
I've got a stock 2500k and GTX 670. I guess I'll overclock them slightly for the first time. It should be enough to get great visuals at 1080p.

Who knows what they mean with their requirements. If it is anything like Wolfenstein, it will run disproportionately poorly for how it looks with having some totally hacked in screenspace techniques which run poorly.

I *think* this is the first game I've seen with 4GB VRAM as a recommended minimum. I guess it had to happen eventually, but I didn't think it would be for a cross-gen game.

Curious as to whether it'll be playable with 2GB cards, at least with lower settings.

I think we can safely say Nvidia cards are going to give people a better experience at launch. The HD7970 I'm retiring was a great card overall, but the clusterfuck that was being an AMD owner at the launch of Rage is not something I'd want to risk walking into again with The Evil Within.

I hear Wolfenstein greatly favored Nvidia's cards too.

Separate things, many games want 8 GBs of ram now. 4GBs of video ram certainly isn't common though, although it is with the newer series I have a 780Ti which only has 3 GBs.

Their statement is "Note: We do not have a list of minimum requirements for the game. If you’re trying to play with a rig with settings below these requirements (you should plan to have 4 GBs of VRAM regardless), we cannot guarantee optimal performance."

Yep. I've said this before, but with the current gen consoles, it doesn't surprise me to see VRAM usage increase heavily. Dev's aren't nearly as constricted with RAM anymore.

And I assume the number of draw calls ramp up, explaining the high CPU requirements.

This game must not use texture streaming AT ALL or something. Seriously, wtf is this game doing that they have a statement like that?
 
Megatexturing for a game with environments which are as small as those in this game seems strange to me.

People should bear in mind these are not minimum requirements, they're reccomendational. Plus it's a game which is on the consoles. I can't imagine why it would require 4GB of graphics memory.

Optimal performance ? I'm really wondering what they mean by this... I'm so happy I'm gone with a 4GB R9 290 instead of a 3GB 780GTX.

So my 2 GB GTX 760 is useless?

Ah well... was planning to get it on PS4 anyways. Hoping that it is a good port on PS4.

Again, Rage is one of the only games that benefitted from more than 2 gigs of vram, but that just meant less texture popping in certain environments. That's sort of the whole thing about idTech 5. It can use however much vram you throw at it.

More is better, but performance isn't going to be remotely hurt by less. It'll just effect texture quality on distant things open areas.

More is recommended, but far from needed.

Glad I'll have a GTX980 before the end of the day...
