Evoland is a journey through the history of action/adventure gaming, allowing you to
unlock new technologies, gameplay systems and graphic upgrades as you progress
through the game. Inspired by many cult series that have left their mark in the RPG
video gaming culture, Evoland takes you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from
active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor and references to
many classic game.

I'm looking forward to it, even if it turns out to be nothing more than a homage to visual styles.

As a non-fan of RPGs, this looks totally cool. I don't know if I'll grab it day one, but I definitely wanna play it.

Oh, and thanks for posting the beta version of this thread on the Steam OT the other day, I feel like I saw a preview :p

If this is a full game instead of just a nostalgia cashgrab I'm all over it. Going to wait for reviews to see if that's the case.

I'm wondering this as well.

From the website: "veterans will also enjoy a host of references to legendary titles scattered along the game"

This isn't making me feel good about its chances. I'm kind of expecting it to be a "HEY GUYS DON'T YOU REMEMBER X?!"-fest. But I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.

Yea sounds like a showcase of sorts. Think I'll pass on that one... Could have been a really cool full game. But at 78 mb, I can't imagine there's much there.

Yeah, retro-worship is fine, but at this point you need to have real meat there. There is already beyond an abundance of retro-worship games. There's no novelty there anymore. Maybe this is actually meaty, I don't know, but that's not really the vibe it's giving off.

I think I remember seeing the original in a day-game jam just like Super Hexagon. But whoa, they really added on to it.

Note: Link to official website seems malformed.

They seem to have nailed every style except for the full 3D, I don't recall Action-Adventures/RPGs looking like this except for a handful of titles I might have missed on PSX or something.

By the way, the link to the website is broken due to misplaced url tags.

This looks pretty good, but I could have sworn I've seen this idea done in a 2D platformer before who's name escapes me at the moment - You play through 8-16-32 bit art styles, which also effect the puzzles in the game. Any thoughts?

Picked this up based on the concept alone. Really cool game too.

I find myself trying to predict what the next upgrade will be.

For the money, it is well worth it just for the history lesson/nostalgia trip.

Look awesome, but I am low on money so I might pick on a sale ...

Basic questions :

How long is it ?

Is the screen in the op pre-rendered backgrounds ?

I was really surprised about the concept when I read about it yesterday. Looks really cool! I'll probably get it during the next (summer) sale.

I'm a few hours into it so far. There's not much challenge here, but the game is still very fun. Still, it's incredibly well done, and I'm smiling the whole way through. Definitely worth the purchase thus far.

I really loved the 16-bit sprite section. The sprite work is so good.

I like how the graphical updates are all intentionally placed where you can't avoid picking them up. Gotta save on those asset production costs, right guys?! Also the part where you can't use items from the menu in the RPG sections.

I dunno, it just wasn't much of a game. It was basically the kind of nostalgia trip "game" you'd have seen on Newgrounds for free back in 2007.

Ok, just beat this yesterday. The "full 3d" sections seem mostly like the DS zeldas in their design (with one exception, which I will not spoil). It's very well done, but fairly short. I beat it in just over three hours, although not at 100%.

I'll get it once it's a little cheaper. I'm not saying the price is unjustified; it looks like a lot of blood, sweat and tears made it happen, no matter how short it is. But I want something I can really sink my teeth into; if a game is really short, only a low price can persuade me to give it a spin anyway.

The concept sounded awesome, and it looked awesome...

But in the end, it's disappointing. I was expecting more. Sure, the game knows which strings to pull to affect our nostalgia, and the concept in itself is good, but in the end there are too few evolutions, the game is short (hopefully? Because it gets tiring after a while), the gameplay isn't that great, and there are far too much references to Final Fantasy VII (a little dose of shout-outs is a good thing; too much references and it becomes an affectionnate parody; way too much references and it becomes just plain unoriginal and ridiculous, especially when said shout-outs aren't clever to begin with).

Looks like the game may end up on 3DS or Wii U: http://www.destructoid.com/shiro-games-considering-evoland-for-nintendo-hardware-250882.phtml

"We have talked with Nintendo about this and it is something that we would like to do in theory," Shiro Games CEO Sebastien Vidal told Destructoid. "It is quite a bit of work from a technology and UI standpoint, though. On top of that, we have already started working (a bit) on our next game. The only thing I can say is that we are discussing the possibility regularly, but we don't know if it will happen or not at this point."

Just bought this game and played it for a little more than an hour.

Disappointed that no one in this thread mentioned the lack of gamepad support. My keyboard failed me when I needed to press more than 2 keys at once to attack the skeletons (you have to attack them from a diagonal angle).

Otherwise it's a fun game. Really love the music and art design so far. Not sure if it's worth the $8 I paid for it on Steam though, not when people are saying it's only 3-4 hours AND lacks gamepad support. (Sure I could use something like joy2key, but COME ON)

I used Joy2Key (for the 360 pad Button 1=Enter, Button 2=Tab, Button 4=Esc). On Twitter the devs said controller support is coming for the Windows version.
