Evolution 2017 The Fighting Game Tournament of the Year (Read OP, No Game Whining)

I was also glad that he left that closed eyes meditation silliness behind.

He acted like his old self during the matches with all the smirks and excitement as in the old days. I honestly started thinking that he could win when I saw him acting like this.

He got up and did the running man before going against Punk, I think he went a level above meditation haha. I'm surprised noone made a webm of that.

That's what I love. Pros make every game so much better, lol.

Except Injustice 2. TRIDENT RUSH!

Real talk, IJ2 grand finals went from hype to dogshit when those Aquaman mirrors happened.

As for Punk, eh. He's Youngblood, so he's just putting in a lot of emotions into it, but he'll bounce back. In the end, he just happened to find his demon at the worst possible moment.

In terms of top 8s for me it was KOF > SFV > GG > Tekken > IJ2 > everything else

KOF was pretty much the best case scenario. It had the most international top 8 with 6 countries represented (China, Taiwan, Pakistan, USA, Mexico and Japan) and there was good character variety (23 unique characters used in the top 8). Then you had Xiaohai talking shit on twitter and setting up all sorts of rivalries. The very first match of the tournament started out with a bang with Xiaohai being sent to losers by Luis Cha. Pako from Mexico also eliminating M' (the world champ). The grand final was also perfect, the two players that were the most dangerous to each other made it through. ET pretty much had the best record against Xiaohai thus far so either one could have won. And of course there was the epic Goro Daimon finish.

SFV was single handedly made worthwhile thanks to Tokido and his dream run through losers. His Akuma was badass to watch in action and the whole Japan VS USA angle is fun as always. It was so good to finally see him win SF at Evo and it felt so right that he did it with Akuma. Loved how his tech felt so ahead of everyone else, very cool stuff.

GG started great but then fizzled out towards the end with free losers finals and grand finals. Tekken in the same boat, started out hype but lost steam for me in the later half when it became apparent it would be just another Saint vs. JDCR grand finals, at that point I spent more time browsing Gaf and waiting for the announcement. Both GG and Tekken were a lot more hype at the Sai pre-EVO Japan tournament so I have high hopes for both at Evo Japan itself.

IJ2 had a Canadian in the grand finals so that was fun. Great Flash play but the Aquaman stuff (or whoever he is) was lame.

The most hype announcements were Geese and the Arika game. It was great watching people lose it over Geese and the Arika game finding funding and revealing a release window was fantastic.

He got up and did the running man before going against Punk, I think he went a level above meditation haha. I'm surprised noone made a webm of that.

Yeah that was great lol.

I feel like it's almost better to drop into losers during top 8 at some point. You get to play right before grand finals and be warmed up while winners side waits and comes in rusty.

The people that rip on SFV are the people that don't play it. It's a great fighting game with a few flaws, but it's easily the most fun to watch at competitions.

Incredible top 8, loved the character variety, and I'm happy Tokido finally got his win.

- Tokido and Nobi (Japanese Tekken Player) in the waiting room at Tekken7FR event.

Tokido : What would you do if "Tekken Aliens" start invading our planet? I mean, someone has to represent us and fight (in Tekken), but If he lose, the Earth will be fallen and destroyed.
Do you think people will choose you? Do you wanna be the one?

Nobi : Hmmmm, I have no idea.

Tokido : If they are "SF5 Aliens", I definitely want to be the one. I think that's what "The Strongest" would be like.

Didn't watch it all since I fell asleep, but Evo top 8 being hype doesn't deny SFV hasn't been as fun to watch since launch (besides eLeague and a few moments). Even the road to top 8 wasn't as hype as it was in the latest SFIV edition.

It also doesn't deny the many issues with the game, that even those top players doing great in the game express.

Let's see if there can be a turnaround from now on.

I love Pokken!
Also shoutouts to Brolynho, dude managed to end EVO ahead of godlike pros like Infil, Xian and Luffy. Always good to see Brazil players in the international FGC scene.

That's entirely dependent on you finding smash interesting though.

KoF grand finals were my personal favourite. The level 3 super read was ridiculous.

Daimon coming out of fucking nowhere in the Grand Finals and fucking shit up was too good.

Is KoF on sale? I really need to pick that game up

The false sense of security in the semi with Punk cleaning 3-0 while Tokido struggled against Du's Guile and that amazing fight with Gief, is the difference.

Tokido's resilience was tested while Punk's wasn't.

This week-end , my highlight were easily

1- SFV
2- Blazblue
3- MVC3

i haven't watched Kof yet

Most lol award : Injustice 2 top 8
Damn i wish i could play this well award : Guilty gear Rev2

The eventual champion brought out Aquaman and no one could touch him.

Second place got mindfucked and tried to outdo him in a mirror TWICE. The second time was especially confusing after getting destroyed so bad in the first one. Too late to recover after that.

Bad NRS balancing is what happened at GF haha. Top 8 for Injustice was actually pretty great whenever Honeybee played (flash, bottom tier character according to many). Dragon who always uses the most broken characters so naturally he used Aquaman against him and 3-0d him to send him to losers. When Honeybee got the runback, he decided to pick Aquaman as well. Two garbage matches followed that before in my opinion it got hype again (I think everyone else left lol). Honeybee went back to Flash, this time beating Dragon twice in a row with some insane mix-ups but ended up losing to Dragon on the last round pretty one sidedly. Dragon won it with repeated mashed MB Trident Rushes and when it came time for the awards ceremony (which was shitty for Evo) everyone booed dragon and his embarrassing fishman.

Edit: Let me add that while I'm not a fan of Dragon, I can't hold it against him that he used Aquaman. They're playing for money and it's NRS and Paulo's fault for letting this shit slide. They've done good about not patching the game excessively which is nice, but Trident Rush was broken and I think should have been slightly adjusted a LONG time ago. How can one get Paulo's job? Lol.

Capcup yields bigger prize money right?
Yeah I think evo is more "prestigious" but still

EVO is way more prestigious. Just need to look at the reactions of the players to see.

Prize money? Think about it, when sports fans talk shit about their teams/players, do they talk about championships, or how much money the athletes made?

Last year Top 8 had some good matches but it was kind of meh overall to me. This year on the other hand was totally legit, awesome overall and so hyped that Tokido could do it coming from losers, totally expected Punk to clean house with ease.

Character variety was great this year. I think peak was 215k+ on twitch which I believe is a jump from last year.

It was 221K peak viewers on Twitch and YouTube had an extra 14K, so in total it was approximately 235K viewers on streaming platforms. Will be interesting to see the ESPN and Disney numbers soon.

That is most definitely not true btw and an incredibly presumptuous narrative lol. A lot of the major players have aired their grievances with the game, some of the same ones people accuse of shilling for Capcom (when it comes to MvCI). I do however enjoy watching it being played by the very best with certain match ups, Tokido last night for example. His Akuma is some of the most impressive play I have ever seen in a fighting game. Oh and I was sad to see that Rashid player lose last night, he did some amazing plays as well.

Too many 50/50's to be consistent at times with sfv.

Why are there more consistent tournament winners in V then? The discussion you're following up to was about how Infiltration crushed the SFV circuit for months, then Nuckledu did, then Punk did. And that never really happened in SFIV other than Infiltration's year of dominance.

Us who've played it are accurate about it though. :p

Honey Bee really made a mistake in the finals.

Yeah I mean I get where he was coming from, but it was still a massive mistake that cost him the game. The matchup is awful but Honeybee when backed into a corner can pull off some crazy shit. People ask why if Honeybee is the better player then why didn't he win the mirror?

(Directed at those asking:)
Because dragon has spent a LOT more time with Aquaman over the course of tourney where as Honeybee had been using Flash all weekend. Two totally different styles of playing between those characters. I think if Honeybee really worked on his Aquaman pre tournament we would have had a different result, however that would have meant less experience with Flash so all those crazy matches he had prior probably wouldn't gone in his favor. Honeybees character loyalty was both a positive and a detriment to his outcome. Dragon isn't a character loyalist and when NRS shits the bed with broken characters, people like him benefit.

I would still get bodied by Dragon lol.

There's a contigent of people on R/Kappa and Youtube whose entire life (it must be a sad life) is devoted on shitting on the game (like downvote every youtube trailer), most of them probably don't even have or play the game. it's basically a meme to them.

The game has its problems, like every fighting game, but it's not like Capcom is not supporting it.

Yeah as someone who has played the game (since beta periods, excessively post launch) and isn't a huge fan of the game (I don't hate it, but I liked IV better) I can say I've seen some pretty outlandish hate online for Capcom now haha. It's one thing to complain about things like balancing, netcode, developer to consumer relations and another to use every opportunity to convince other people that their game is shit, they're shit and Capcom are evil scum trying to take their wallets in the night. I saw kappa had an insanely upvoted post telling people to boycott MvCi. Why? You don't like it then cool, but trying to promote the death of another fighting game pre launch is pretty silly. We should be building up the FGC, not tearing it down.

I make jokes about Capcom all the time and I have problems with the way MvCi is going but still, they're being militant about it and it's silly.

The new Arika fighter looks amazing, looks like a fighting game I would play a lot once released. Plus I always liked Arika as a company. Their Cave ports on the PS2 were godlike.
