I'm going to side with #TeamDerivative, as the character style is extremely similar to Miyazaki's character style even pre-Ghibli.

Saying that, it could be welcome to be derivative of such an iconic and great character style. If anyone is capable of doing the style justice for the duration of a feature film, it's former employees of Studio Ghibli.

If Matt Groening's art style was adapted by his former co-workers so that they could make their own unique show in the style of Simpsons / Futurama / Disenchantment, I think that would have the potential to be pretty good too.

It's made close to 20 million. Sounds they did well, assuming the budget for the movie wasn't crazy high (more than 10 mil budget). Good to see another anime studio doing well, which is rare these days. How's the reaction critic wise for the movie, Ghibli good?

Well it has made like 19 million so far, so presumably some people in Japan have seen it. It hasn't opened in any of the 155 other planned territories yet though.

where's the impressions tho

Is 20 million good then? I was hoping it would do well.

I was wondering about this too.

This has been out for some time now in Japan. Has anyone here seen it?

The only English language review I've seen has been Kim Morrissy's at Anime News Network.

Don't know how many people caught the recent screening of Kiki's Delivery Service in theaters, but prior to the movie starting, they showed a trailer for this and indicated that GKids will be doing special screenings of this in December in the US, presumably as a similar limited time event as they have been doing for their Studio Ghibli Fest.

Good to hear.

I just got back from Japan and I saw posters for this everywhere. I saw the trailer and one thing thats missing to me is the music of joe hisaishi and it would be perfect.

Character designer isnt listed but probably it must be Masashi Ando who worked with the director in the previous movie.

Another animator who follows Ghibli design is Yoshiharu Sato who also worked on WMT TV series

$20m is decent for a Japanese domestic film but not good at all when compared to Ghibli films. Marnie made $34m and was considered a flop by Ghibli standards and was a factor that lead Ghibli to abandon feature film production.

I hope it's not too far from expectations given they're an upstart and they can gradually build up their reputation.

It's still running though, by the time it finishes I expect it to have made more than Marnie. Still wouldn't be great for Ghibli, but maybe closer to somewhere between the typical anime cash-in and a Hosoda movie? I guess not everyone can be Your Name. :p
