I've got a teammate, a very skilled programmer, who is really into MLP. I've tried to understand it but I simply cannot.

He has pretty much no friends outside of his pony club, is very difficult to get along with, and has communication troubles.

He wears only pony-themed clothes, even when dressinng nice he's got pony polos. He paints his fingernails the color of his favorite pony (he is straight and doesn't come off as feminine). He has tried to show me pony porn. He goes by the nickname of his pony-self and aggressively insists it's his real name.

He collects pony figurines, and sleeps with a pony plushie. He listens to pony-themed remixes of popular songs. He only willingly talks to females who like ponies as much as he does. He is an adult.

Yet at the same time, he tells me that ponies are not what his life revolves around, and outright denies enjoying any sexual representation of these cartoon characters.

What am I missing?

He tries to explain to me that he loves the concepts of love and friendship taught by the show. Not only do I feel that these kind of things can be easily classified as common sense, he doesn't demonstrate any of the traits he claims the show conveys.

It is his way of coping with loneliness, like that of an anime waifu or something?

I want this explained so I can better understand the people I work with every day.

Yes.

It's possible to be extreme fan of anything, just as you can be a reasonable fan. Some people just think MLP is a good show and talk about it on the internet, other people are... Like your friend.

Oh, he also made a speech about how ponies changed his life in his communications class.

I'm very tolerant of him, I spend lots of time working with him and the rest of my team. It's just hard to rationalize what I experience because his actions conflict with his claims.

Why go after real women when you have ponies bro?

Your buddy might be a budding psychopath. Run far away, that or he might be a closet paedophile...that's not cool. Or maybe he just really likes ponies and is just socially awkward person and the latter has nothing to do with the former...take your pick

There are times I wish I were a psychologist. I'd love to study GAF and all the internet cliques and figure out why they do what they do and all the social hierarchies involved.

Big red flag right there. Guy idealizes ponies as an escape. He romanticizes / humanizes them as a means to release his pent up sexual frustration and tension.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has underlying mental issues, or suffered some kind of traumatic childhood experience that repressed his ability to grow up.

It's okay to like the show....but the bolded is signs of something more serious.

Has there been any connection with MLP fascination and having Aspergers Syndrome? I'm not making fun, this is a serious question- far too often it seems like the most devoted of Pony fans have aspergers. I wonder if there is a connection.

Pretty sure this person works in the office across from me. I've mentioned it on gaf previously, but one day when he was out I had to sign for delivery of his MLP Pinkie Pie pajamas. He showed me them later :cry

I understand grown men liking a children's cartoon, or at least I think I do. Hey, I like cartoons myself. But I've seen forums where MLP threads are created and a few weeks later half of the users have pony avatars and are discussing their favorite ponies. So my question isn't exactly how, but why this particular cartoon? What does it have that seems to lure men into a vocal, obnoxious fanbase? I don't get it.

I watched 2 seasons on Netflix one week when I was sick and in bed. I thought it was pretty good. It wasn't The Wire of children's cartoons or anything like that, but it was enjoyable at least. I don't really feel like watching season 3 though.

I find it just so odd that people treat this like a religion. I mean, my God. I used to watch the Powerpuff Girls but I'm not dressing up as Blossom when I go out.

Why would someone get that delivered at work? Or anything for that matter?

It's a TV series people like, to sometimes extreme amount. And some people don't like that other people like it, because they are bothered by the fact people enjoy porn they cannot understand or like thing they don't - So they mock them about it, because there's nothing quite like the uniting feeling of the entire internet against a small subset of it.

Basically, they're the new furries.

Well that's all the explanation *I* need.

Is this really anything new?

There's nothing about the pony fad that wasn't (and isn't) done with...say, Pokemon. People get obsessed with it, people sleep with Pokemon plushies, people fantasize about fucking them...

I have a niece whom I buy toys for from time to time. I really hope she doesn't get into MLP - I couldn't bring myself to get them from a shop lest people judge me.

I seriously thought everybody was liking it in a sort of ironic way. I even watched a couple of episodes thinking it would be some kind of powerpuff girls cartoon or so.

I was wrong.
