You'll have to excuse me if I seem a little excited. I've been waiting for a tour announcement or just ANY new information about what the band is doing for months now. YIPPEE!!

From Pitchforkmedia...

Explosions in the Sky Launch U.S. Tour
Yet find no link between Tomahawk cruise missiles and Interscope Records

Nick Patch reports:
Explosions in the Sky are the best apocalyptic, 9/11-predicting instrumental rock band in the game. And of course, the best way to enjoy the band's prophetic assault is within a live setting. Fortunately-- with all due thanks to modern dingy-club and big-old-van technology-- folks from all over North America are going to have the opportunity to have their brains straight melted. We also know that The Microphones, Adem, Eluvium and We Ragazzi will be joining the band for legs of their tour, but it's uncertain which of those will be playing which dates. So for now, we'll break it down thusly:

09-29 Houston, TX - Mary Jane's (w/The Microphones)
10-01 Gainesville, FL - Common Grounds
10-02 Atlanta, GA - Echo Lounge
10-03 Carrboro, NC - Go Rehearsal Studios
10-04 Baltimore, MD - Ottobar
10-05 Philadelphia, PA - First Unitarian Church
10-06 Brooklyn, NY - Northsix
10-07 Cambridge, MA - Middle East
10-08 New York, NY - Mercury Lounge
10-09 Montreal, QC - Casa Del Popolo
10-10 Hamilton, ON - TBA
10-11 Toronto, ON - Horseshoe Tavern
10-13 Detroit, MI - TBA
10-14 Columbus, OH - Wexner Center For The Arts
10-15 Chicago, IL - Logan Square Auditorium
10-16 Northfield, MN - The Cave
10-17 Omaha, NE - TBA
10-20 Seattle, WA - Crocodile
10-21 Portland, OR - Meow, Meow
10-22 San Francisco, CA - Cafe Du Nord
10-23 Los Angeles, CA - Knitting Factory
10-24 Pomona, CA - Glass House
10-25 San Diego, CA - Casbah
10-26 Tucson, AZ - Plush
10-27 El Paso, TX - Moontime
10-28 Lubbock, TX - TBA
10-29 Denton, TX - Hailey's

In other Explosions in the Sky news, the band tells us via e-mail that they are contributing some music to Friday Night Lights, a movie adaptation of the non-fiction book of the same name, coming out in October and starring Angelina Jolie's former chewtoy Billy Bob Thornton. It was appreciation for the book that sparked the band's interest in the project, as it was written about a town adjacent to the one in which three band members grew up. "The book is really amazing and interesting, and we hope a lot of the heart, tone, and themes make it into the movie, but to be honest, we don't have the highest hopes," the band wrote.

As for new material from the group, they're planning on taking some time off after the upcoming North American tour to write, with the goal of releasing a new album by the end of next year. That is, if there is a next year. Whoa.
-----------

Awesome, awesome, AWESOME! Explosions in October! On a Sunday in Hamilton! A Monday in Toronto! Sorry...these guys totally blow me away.

Explosions in the Sky are the instrumental quartet, right?

I really dig their work, but can you fill me in on the 9/11 reference?

Wow, that's horribly vague for a "prediction."

Now that album that had the explosion of the WTC on the cover the week of, now that was prediction.

it came out a long time before that.

the comment is pun about their name.

The sophomore effort from this band of emo-style prog-rockers, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever was released on September 10, 2001--and the cover art features the prescient words, "This plane will crash tomorrow."

Yes, a band named Explosions in the Sky did release a record the day before there were, quite literally, explosions in the sky on September 11th. Yes, the album did have a track called "This Plane Will Crash Tomorrow".

ahem

Yes indeed, they are an absolutely amazing instrumental quartet.

As for the 9/11 reference, the album cover has been posted in this thread, and on the inside of it the words "This plane will crash tomorrow" are written. The album came out a little before 9/11. I still think it's an odd coincidence, but you can find meaning in anything if you look hard enough.

If you haven't seen Explosions live, do not hesitate to go if they're coming anywhere near you. Their live show is simply incredible. The amount of energy is freaking ridiculous.
