External drive + on at boot in motherboard = stall ... why?

To add to this thread from a few days ago, http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=53374, it seems as if yes, if my new Seagate drives are on, and plugged in via USB at boot, the system will stall.

Thank God it didn't fry the drive this time like it might've to the other drives, but I booted...

INTE...

... I turn off the power strip for those Seagate drives, and it continues booting.

What the hell would cause this?

there's a cheap, eccentric hermit detector in the drive case. it can't proceed while the detector has a positive read

Same problem here. Seagate 7200.7 80GB and Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe.

I only use the externals as storage/backup so no big deal for me.

that is odd. just keep them unplugged when you boot i guess. it's probably a bug in something embedded
