This was designed in collaboration with gamers. Goo d grief. I'm still not sure who this is _even_ for and why. Is this Sony testing the waters for a real portable gaming device? Sony doing everything but committing to a PSP, Vita or Steam Deck type device. At least that's how it feels. The accessory itself with HDMI and Ethernet is kind of cool though. But it feels like a really strange mixed message.

Now this is a stupid statement.
- Their mirrorless cameras are amongst the best.
- They produce the vast majority of camera sensors for smart devices.
- Their movies division does well.
- After the reorganisation, their smartphones have gotten much better (only ones still taking audio seriously).
- Their audio products are among the best in the higher end consumer market.
- And their TVs are great, even though they no longer make their own displays.

They're down over 40% for the year. Their TVs are OK, losing market share, SONY pictures is doing well, hardware business is bleeding, audio products are great, still losing money.

TBH everything is down, so let’s not read much into it.
Ok the other hand resource allocation matters - I guess it is a matter of Japanese pride, because I would cut the phone division and focus that money elsewhere e.g. games/movie division to become the next Disney.

Sony's problem as always is they seriously lack integration across business units. Imagine they were combining their gaming expertise, good phone, audio and image tech with their music, movies and anime libraries

I would possibly buy that, if PS+ had an Android app. But for remote play Vita is fine.
No interest in this expensive high end "gaming" phone though.
Funny, in the 90s and early 00s people used to say things along the lines of 'Apple forgot they are not Sony'.
Interesting how times change. Things will likely again be very different in 10 to 20 years.
Its the gaming phone market which is actually a premium part of the phone market or at least trying to be, not my jam but it looks a decent effort by sony, for comparison sakes this is the Asus ROG Phone 6 with its add on module, such things are quite normal, also the fact the Qualcomms current chip designs have hit the limits of fanless cooling so throttle in games and overheat in some cases so a fan is a necessity.

Too sad that Sony phones arent doing that well, while they can be best or on the top of the market.
I bought Sony xperia 1 on launch, about 3,5 years ago. And it still works "like new", is still more than enough for everything I do with it, 21:9 is just superior ratio after the first day of getting used to it. Only negative is the support for software updates, with longer support these could last like 5-10 years, assuming the battery wont explode etc.
Before Sony I had multiple samsungs, all broke in about 2-3 years in identical usage, without dropping them etc. Just weird software glitches etc, like they started to crash or hang.
Sony products can be expensive, but in my personal experience they are high quality and worth it. Like I have Sony tvs, vhs, dvr and other electronics from 80's - 00's and all still work. Had 2014 sony lcd tv that were on for 10-12h day for 7 years and didnt break, and is still in active use on next user. Of course some people have bad experiences, but I have always recomended Sony to my friends/family and none have had problems.
Too bad that people are willing to pay 1500-2500€ for apple/samsung stuff that is on par or worse, and then wont even consider Sony phones because they are not popular and people buy what others buy.

Vita doesn't do remote play with PS5.
But, any other phone still does. You just need to use a controller.

oh, ok, didn't know that. Speaking of remote play for PS4 only then. Remote on Vita works better than on my phone which get's rather warm and allows less distance between me and the PS4.

This here is imo a much better choice, for almost half the price. With L/R control , dedicated gaming UI and a physical cooling fan.

Still can't believe the Xperia 1 IV doesn't have triggers. With the type of gamer they're supposedly chasing after with this high-end gamer phone, a couple buttons would make a difference in how playable this would be.
4K however, is perhaps not superficial in this market... it's overkill (you're not going to find mobile games with 4K textures or "real" 4K visuals, and then recording at 4K/120 will eat up like 20GB every 10 minutes so storage sounds like fun,) but these phones are made for are streamers and kids want 4K videos. Whether or not that extreme resolution will make you a better gamer (it won't,) people doing this kind of high-end stuff on a phone will want every bulletpoint they can get of maxxed values.
...You want fidelity and you want framerate to be the best possible so that kids can watch on their mom's cracked iPhone with pizza grease smeared all over the screen and not complain about shitballs video in a thumbs-down comment.

So they can sell that add-on for other phones that can fit inside it, as it not only comes with the Xperia 1 iv gaming edition, but you can also by the dock separately for $200 or something like that iirc.
Sony doesn't want to blow PlayStation resources on the mobile department. That's why Playstation opened a new mobile division and brought out a mobile developer.
