... Anyone find it bothersome that Shawn Green, one of the top position players for the LA Dodgers, is being reported in almost a negative spotlight because he's sitting out against the San Fran Giants this Saturday to respect Yom Kipuur (that crazy Jewish holiday?). It's all over ESPN News, like they're shocked, yet he has done this before!

Man I've always said that if your religion affects your work then you should get your ass fired. Sorry but if I was an employer and some guy would refuse to come in on some day because of his religion, I'd find a way to fire his ass.

Saturday is shabbas. Jewish day of rest. Means I don't work, I don't drive a car, I don't fucking ride in a car, I don't handle money, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as shit don't fucking roll!

ESPN is WAY out of line in the way they're going about this. For one, Rob Dibble, on the Dan Patrick Show (on E-S-P-N-RA-DI-O...:D) was being a jerk about it.

One thing I DO have a problem with though, is that he shouldn't decide a day or 2 before that he wants to day the day off.

Maybe he hasn't had a rest day in a while though. Even though, as of now, as far as I know, he hasn't made a decision. From a baseball standpoint, forget the religious part, you can't just say you're gonna miss a game, aside from Emergency circumstances. If you know in advance that you're going to miss the game, let the Dodgers know about it before hand. Now, maybe he's already done this. Then, this becomes a non-issue.

Also, if he's going to observe the holiday, I find it odd that he's only taking one day off, when both games happen to fall during the holiday.

Again, I love listening to Rob Dibble, but he's a fucking moron.

This is a little different because he's playing in a friday night game, which falls under the holy day, but sitting out the Saturday game. It seems a little inconsistent, doesn't it? I don't have a problem with it, though, speaking as a non-Jewish, non-baseball fan.

Anybody remember everybody jumping on Vince Carter for taking part in his college graduation?

Yeah I was just about to say this. They're not getting on him for missing the game, just for being inconsistent about it. And they're not REALLY even getting on him for that.

Yep, every places I've worked at, every part time workers HAD to work christmas or they'd be booted.

Cheer up, work hard and you'll get a better job someday.

I thought the holiday was sundown to sundown... or is that only Rashashana (sp?)?

I have one hell of a job right now but thanks.

Still, part time employees at the pharmacy still need to either work christmas or new year's eve even though the govt owns the place. If you call in sick you better have a doctor's note or you're gonna get f'ked up the ass.

Rosh Hashana. -_-

And yes, since the jewish caledar is lunar (well, actually, it's a mixture of solar and lunar), holidays fall from sundown to sundown. Each day ends and a new one starts at sundown.

There are two things. One, the Dodgers have been presuring him about the series and I don't think it's something you make a rash choice about. It's virtually a game for playoff contention, so he has to choose between his personal religion or the playoff hopes for Los Angeles. That's tough. As far as I know, he's sitting out Saturday to at least observe the holiday, but playing Friday so that the Dodgers don't lose him for the entire series.

Point is, Green has done this before. Same thing happened in the 2001 season.

who cares. The way Green has played this year, sitting out might actually HELP the dodgers :p Besides, older players like Green sit out games all the time, even down the stretch. Whats the difference if its for Yom Kippur or just to rest up. Same shit. Typical example of the media turning a non-issue into a story.

He's not bringing it into the work place. That's pretty stupid.

Again, that's like someone demanding you work Christmas or Easter if you're a Christian.

Thank you. The fact that Green is making a compromise is pretty good of him, and people are still giving him shit? Fuck 'em.

Not really. More to the point, if a person refuses to work on Christmas, there isn't much the company can do about it. That's why anyone who does work that day gets at least time and a half, if not double time.

Businesses, even governemental businesses can oblige you to work on christmas or new year's eve at normal rate and give you your holiday day off on any another day during the week.

Yeah no one works on christmas eve and new year's eve in hospitals etc... ;)
You can bet your ass they are forced to come to work.

Well sure, but you said it happens in almost every business when the opposite is true...most of the business world is dark on Christmas and New Years. But yeah, some industries have to keep going...electrical and plumbing companies, emergency services, public transit, whatever. And movie theatres are generally open on Christmas day. But I've gotta think that if you have any sort of seniority in most of these places, you can refuse to work on those days without shit being said.

BTW, who the hell works those days at normal pay? That's just fucked up.

So far from the truth that it isn't even funny. Companies are often off for major holidays such as Christmas, Easter, New Year's and Thanksgiving. Hell, if you're lucky, the company won't make you come in on Columbus Day.

But in most circumstances, barring a pretty shitty at-will employment situation, firing an employee for taking a day for observing their religion is illegal.

I don't see what the big deal is. This guy can take any day off he wants and he has to expect that the fans and sports media is going to criticize him if they lose as a result. The same shit happened to Vince Carter who wanted to go to his college graduation (while everyone complains that NBA players are not getting a college education), it is the same shit. Don't ever expect the sports media to be fair or even logical.

AFAIK, both Muslims and Jews witness the days as starting from sunset, and ending sunset the next day. Meaning a Friday night game can be considered part of the same day as a Saturday day game.

As far as extra days off go, you want some extra days off for travel/preparations.

hi.. you have to fast in yom kippur.. that means no food.. no water.

and just to clarify some more..

the fast starts firday night .. today.. after sundown.. and ends saturday night.. at sundown..

this aint you regular christan holiday.

I don't think he deserves an ounce of credit for choosing himself and his religion over his teammates, especially when he's earning $16,666,667 this season. He's in a position of power. He can do whatever he wants and not really be sacrificing anything. The team would probably rather not make this an issue in attempting to make him play, pissing off their superstar player and distracting their team in the process.

There really isn't a controversy, however: "Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said Green had the support of the team, no matter what he decided to do." If his boss says it's okay, I don't have a problem with it. Part of me does want to see the Dodgers lose the game he sits out due to a mistake by his replacement and end up missing the playoffs by a game, though...

are there any football games on christmas? this is also one of the holiest jewish holidays... the fact that he would be fasting would make it very difficult for him to physically exert himself during a football game.

None, but the upside is that the laws of the religion dictate that if you don't eat for those 24 hours, all of your sin for the year is wiped out. Seems like a pretty good deal, although I can't imagine going without food for 24 hours.

If I recall correctly, the Dream used to fast during some basketball games which meant he had to play an entire game without water. Those guys sweat like crazy during a game and he didn't drink a drop, so it CAN be done.

Whatever, it is a none issue and it would only come up in sports because the sports media and a lot of fans are retarded.
