I thought something was different this morning when I backspaced and the 'is' disappeared.

Oh well, I still used it anyways.

BUMP.

So apparently Facebook finally got rid of the mandatory "is" on the status, next to your name.

Status whores everywhere rejoice!

This is a victory for the people

What is this "is" thing people are talking about?

On facebook you can update your "status" on your profile. However, until now, it always added a mandatory is. So it would be Grandjedi is (insert comment here). So it was hard for people to talk in the past tense and such

Hard trying to fit the "is" in a sentence written in other languages than English to,

Facebook & CIA ties?

This may be old to some people in here, but I'm still surprised that it hasn't come up yet in this thread.

Thats really creepy. I'd like to fact check on my own, but I've thought in the back of my mind that social networkng sites were a conspiracy to get peopel to voluntarily offer information they shouldn't.

/end conspiracy theory

So there's a name for you people. I've seriously considered unfriending two somewhat random girls I went to high school with cause they seriously update every few hours, and all I see on the front page is how great/terrible their life is by the hour. I changed the setting to not show anything from them in the news feed and it's still all I see.

I just never typed anything in the "is" status section and nothing showed up... How is this any different to doing that?

New addition I just found out about today: the built-in instant messenger.

I like it :)

I'm confused. Are you just talking about messages? Like the ones in your inbox? Maybe there's an application I'm missing.

When I logged on to Facebook today, there was some message in the lower right corner about the instant messenger.

Here's what it looks like on my screen:

"Facebook Chat's help page confirms the slow rollout: "We are currently running a pre-launch beta to a few networks to make sure that the product is ready to go. Once Facebook Chat is ready, we'll release the feature to everyone on Facebook." Even once Facebook Chat leaves beta, not everyone will have immediate access and some may never--currently, the Web app works only with Internet Explorer 7.0, Firefox 2, and Safari 2 for PC and Firefox 2, Safari 2, and Safari 3 for Mac."

This is a great move business wise for Facebook because if people want to use this chat you have to keep the browser open on FB, but unless they gain compatibility with MSN, Yahoo and AIM it will be difficult to get people to use it. They should make it open and compatible with standards like Jabber like googletalk.

I seem to be getting pretty tired of Facebook. Just today I restricted access to my pictures to about 20 friends or so. I don't need people I haven't seen in 4 years looking at all my shit checking in on me. That's what high school reunions are for.

Just curious.

If I'm in my mid 20s and have no facebook or myspace page. Am I completely out of touch with society?

i think we're normal. a lot of people around our age dont use the sites or so i've noticed.

i have a myspace but nothing on it since i just use it to read band updates. no facebook for me though, a bunch of my friends had one but some have dropped out. the people that are relevant in my life now i keep in touch with other ways or you know see in real life. who cares about all the people i went to school with years ago... it's nice to say hi or whatever but we'll talk if i bump into them or at reunions. sure it builds your fiends list but who cares, it's like a mmo for attention whores. if you think about it other than increasing some numbers what are you getting out of the site? nothing really, you just waste a ton of time.
