Faithless leader Maxi Jazz dead at 65

Damn, what a shame. Outrospective and Sunday 8pm are great records. His lyrics were really something. The music was good but it was his writing that put Faithless into the same league as Massive Attack and Portishead.

Shiiit, what a loss on Christmas eve. A truly unique band leader, his honest and thoughtful lyrics, often spoken instead of rapped really, were such a breath of fresh air. It's hard to overstate what he did for electronic dance music, before he came along it was generally seen as a trashy and shallow culture and he changed that almost singlehandedly.
I remember seeing faithless live on pinkpop in '96 or '97, back then they only had their first album out so they played Insomnia twice, the whole tent went apeshit (house music on a rock festival was something pretty new then). So yeah, awesome live band, and still pretty much unique in pop/chart history with what they brought.

IIRC Maxi Jazz was a buddhist so I wish him a safe onward journey on the road to nirwana. I'm pretty sure he got a lot closer on this run.

This is a nice example of his lyricism IMHO:

I always thought he passed away a long time ago because Faithless disbanded in 2011 and vanished into the ether. Turns out he was still around, but not making the same splash. RIP Maxi, I'll always love some of their hits, especially the song about Muhammad Ali:

This song here really highlights how good he was at writing lyrics. He took an old reggae track, money in my pocket, and turned it into a song about homelessness.

Now when you climb
Into your bed tonight
And when you lock
And hold the door
Just think of those
Out in the cold and dark
'Cause there is not enough love to go round
Now when you climb
And when you lock
Just think of those
Out in the cold and dark
'Cause there is not enough love to go round.
Until you wake up
You people need a shake up
You take up so much time
Worrying, scurrying,
Here, there,
Losing your hear
No money to spare
No love to share
No wonder you appear under pressure from here
You look fresh, yeah
But all i got is dirt in my hear
My nightmares manifest,
But i can escape
Yours is in your chest
With no formal shape
The tape is running
I push the button to send
Upon each other we all depend
Message end
Whoever asks my name
Or where i came from
People fear contamination
If they chary too long
I carry a strong
Sin of despair
It's in the air
I'm broken and hard to repair
I may mistaken be
But i patiently wait
On the pad to humanity
I sit at the gates
Now when you climb
Into your bed tonight
And when you lock
And hold the door
Just think of those
Out in the cold and dark
'Cause there is not enough love to go round
Now when you climb
Into your bed tonight
And when you lock
And hold the door
Just think of those
Out in the cold and dark
'Cause there is not enough love to go round
Dirty, cold, hurting, soul,
Down the river
My liver in bad condition
Like my skin
Rain falling, once again
I'm in my bed
Hurt the time in
I'm gonna struggle for air
There's hair in my food
When i get it usually someone already half ate it
Touch it, not to let it
Get me down
But my head starting to pad
People go round, and round and round
From one i get a cigarette
A little more love found
But the ground is still wet
My chief are chattering
And there's a spattering of seeds
Sometimes i lose all feeling in my feet
When i sleep i'll do my deep in the mainstream
But unaccountably my heart was growing
Small and mean
A hurry past
Ridged people i pretend i haven't seen
But there's money in my pocket
And my clothes are clean?
I said money in my pocket
But i just can't give no love
Money in my pocket
But i just can't give no love
Now when you climb
Into your bed tonight
And when you lock
And hold the door
Just think of those
Out in the cold and dark
'Cause there is not enough love to go round
'Cause there is not enough love to go round

I think it was the first or 2nd track on Outrospective. It’s really worth listening to if you got the time

65? I didnt know he was that old. still pretty young in the grand scheme of things. Or was he? maybe we should all be thankful for what we have right now and try to love one another as best we can for time is fleeting and you never know what will happen next. So come on people now lets get together and try to love one another right now.
