But what you're doing now is looking at the incident in isolation from the build-up factors I've already listed before.
In other words, said landscape painting already included bits and pieces of an abstract statement on the color red.
Not to mention that, regardless of the valid complaints about this particular event, it was immediately followed up by better-handled content.
Honestly, the claim that "IT WAS ALL A DREAM!" would be a better alternative is quite amusing but not actually true.
Do you seriously believe that Code Geass was ever "as serious" as Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Now that's disingenuous.
The staff is on the record saying they did several entertaining "non-legit" things during S1 beyond THAT, even before they worked on R2 (which has more of those).
There was surely a shift from a more balanced production to an unbalanced one with more flaws. But you seem to suggest the staff either didn't know exactly what kind of craziness they were producing or that they should be criticized and shunned for it. If the claim is the show "veered off course" after S1 then the fact of the matter is the staff re-adjusted their plans for much more entertainment and pushed that angle, using less of an already limited supply of seriousness.
On the whole, I find your outlook to be highly inaccurate since it downplays the ever-present theatrics, silly elements and over-the-top nature of Code Geass as somehow being entirely normal for a standard Gundam-type production or regular mecha show that's all serious business from head to toe, which is demonstrably incorrect even by way of direct comparison. Even within the director's own track record, the series has more in common in terms of tone, content and style with the less serious and more whimsical or contrived works (such as GunxSword) rather than the more realistic and grounded ones (such as Planetes).
What also makes this series different from a lot of the List entries is that regardless of THAT or R2's multiple formal failings, enjoying the show for its entertaining craziness isn't somehow "betraying" or ignoring the intentions of the creators (unless you do so 100% cynically and actually hate it, I guess). In fact, it's playing right into them. It's even entirely possible to enjoy Code Geass as a whole under parameters which at least partially fall outside of the description found on your List write-up too, as crazy but non-trainwreck. I'm guessing you probably think the ending is awful, for example, but other views about it are far more genuinely positive.
I don't believe that re-watching the series and also looking up creator-related materials qualifies as "revisionism" in the negative sense you're implying.
It's rather selective to exclusively call out the Mao arc for its drama when the character himself is simultaneously quite comedic too.
Honestly...I'd say that premise is a little counter-intuitive, when those same three things basically prove that the show's level of seriousness didn't start out nearly as high as some want to think. Ergo, they're "seeds" of the initial course being over-the-top, not for "going off track" unless you somehow think being theatrical and wearing a silly mask isn't part of the original "track" but only part of the problem.
It's almost funny how we take that piece of information in opposite directions. But hey, at least we seem to agree about liking the ending.

Honestly, I thought it was stronger than the previous ones. I know that's really not saying much but still. It was ridiculous but so mind breakingly so like the previous two.
And yeah, more Russia is always a good thing, but I can't agree to have her upstage Charl that much.

Oh, and I liked the Edoras arc, if that's the one you're criticizing there... the alternate versions of the characters were kind of interesting to see, and while the Exceed are sometimes annoying, they're not THAT bad.

Seriously though, bad writing is an IS (and bad anime) tradition. Harem animes very rarely actually get GOOD writing, and S2 of IS's is as bad or worse than most. And you're right, they're trying to tease you with bits of the plot to explain away why there are so many fanservice episodes, but it doesn't quite work. Going from the serious fight of ep. 4, to the silliness/stupidity of ep. 5, and back again with no real transition? Poor writing and plot teasers for sure.
True... but the early part of the series is nothing like what it later becomes. It does seem likely that it was changed after starting (the original source that is, not the anime itself) in order to reach greater popularity, I'd think... though of course as I said its anti-nuclear message is pretty badly exaggerated, that is more original than yet another battle manga, anyway.R_thanatos said:

Yeah, as I said, for me it was because the characters are just too stupid... far too often it's annoying, not funny or entertaining, to watch characters act that dumb.
I like that Fairy Tail keeps things moving -- no endless battles there, each one ends fairly quickly. That's good. But yeah, I don;t like the serious arcs, like those two I mentioned or parts of the Fairy Tail movie... I just don't think it fits the series tone quite as well as the other parts. Still, I follow it, something not true about the other long-running big shonen battle mangas, so it clearly does some things right (or at least entertainingly).

How so? Because in the canon there's no explanation for it at all? Even if both manga explanations are horribly sexist and stupid, at least they EXISTED, which is more than can be said for the LN/anime version...
I rather didn't like "Its never meant to be serious" explanation either, there's enough foreshadowing and buildup that leading to that event, so I don't agree its forced either.
The execution could be better, that just the case.. I think even Okouchi like that, in early of R2 he make Lelouch wear contacts.. the event in S1 would be much better if the Geass broke through that contact or something lol
Its still S-Class writing skillz tho.

Well that didn't take long... I can see why people dislike KnK after finishing the third episode. I still think it's a pretty good looking show that seems well animated (with some QUALITY here and there but what show doesn't have that?).
Seems like its faults come solely or mostly from the material the show is based on?

Curiously enough, even Okouchi doesn't seem to have a very high opinion of his own writing as being the best thing ever. I didn't expect to see him ask people to turn off their brains and just watch the show during a commentary track for Planetes, of all things, but he sure did say that!
Kind of a chill attitude that explains why he can write crazy stuff like Code Geass and Valvrave when not limited by the constraints of an adaptation or a realistic setting.

Okay, the thing you need to know about Gon is that he's really not quite right in the head. At all. I can't vouch for Leorio, as he's one of the most underdeveloped characters in the entire series, but Gon is completely nuts.
Also, I can't say too much about Kurapika, but there's a lot of stuff about the chains you don't know. They are a really cool weapon, but they have some limitations as a result.
I could see you getting extremely frustrated with the series by the end of this arc. I mean, you're clearly already frustrated with certain parts of it, and several of your previous posts have expressed a lot of frustration, but the end of this arc just might be the kicker for you. But maybe not.
