I only like Halloween just to eat a bunch of candy and not feel guilty about it.

How does this compare to New Leaf?

This appears to be a much longer and substantial event. I believe in New Leaf activities were mostly limited to trick or treating and exchanging candy with Jack for some Halloween themed items. Pumpkin crafting helps extend the event here.
