Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

yea i think it's ok if you wanna experience the game as obs made it, and installing a million mods isn't such a great idea in general

i don't really know like 70% of those mods but sounds like an alright list

i find it kinda weird that you don't use an overall texture mod like ojo bueno but just like a bunch of tiny ones like for newspapers and shit. personally i'm not a fan of texture mods in general as i'm pretty anal about everything looking the same but most people like em so you might want to check em out

This is me posting from the afterlife to tell you Zkylon takes more of your soul the more you post in this topic. Get out while you still can.

Or I just stopped keeping up with the mod scene. Death has made me forget these things.

i see there's still a bit of soul left in you for me to suck >:3

Well I played my first hour of New Vegas this morning.

I have to say, this game is... kinda ugly. I mean I wasn't expecting too much since it came out in 2010, but still. It's only a year older than Skyrim but it doesn't even come close to matching Skyrim's graphics or animations. The most annoying thing is that there is no animation for running diagonally — is this a PS1 game or what?! It looks so horrible that it was actually breaking the immersion for me, so I mostly stuck to the first-person view.

The ugliness of the game is actually making me rethink my texture mod setup. Plus, you're right zkylon, it is pretty weird that I only did the small texture mods but decided against installing any of the bigger ones. So now I'm deciding between just accepting the graphics for what they are and uninstalling all of my texture/graphics mods for maximum performance and visual consistency, or going back to the STEP guide and going all-in with the visual enhancement mods. I have a pretty decent PC (GTX 760, 8gb RAM) so I think I can handle a good amount of graphics mods. I'm leaning towards the latter option. I've had an hour to experience the "vanilla" look of the game. Oh, and Nevada Skies makes the nights so damn dark! 2spooky4me. So while I'm at it I'll install the patch where it makes the nights brighter.

I know I've said mostly negative things so far, but I actually enjoyed playing the game for the most part. I can see its potential.

you have to realize that new vegas was made mostly using assets and tech from 2008 rather than 2010, so it's actually (mostly) 3 years old.

obsidian (wisely) chose to spend most of their tech development on adding gameplay (iron sights, reputation systems, traits) rather than rendering and animation which would probably wouldn't have gone too well considering they made the frigging game in like a year and a half tops. unfortunately they didn't redo the interface, that's my biggest complaint about the game, but what can you do. i don't even mention the shitty combat cos i believe that really was impossible to fix in obs' timeframe.

i don't think the game's specially ugly and some of it is improvable, there are animation improving mods and mods that add things like depth of field and ambient occlusion and new vegas redesigned does most faces in the game with facegen which makes em look a lot better. there are texture mods for weapons and armor that are very high quality too.

so yea you can get it looking a bit better but this game is not witcha 2 no matter how much you tweak it

gameplay wise imo it's the strongest rpg experience in a long long time (and prolly my favorite since fallout 2) so yea, totally worth the ugliness

Yeah I know there's stuff out there but for the most part I don't like to mess too much with the visuals in games. There aren't any faithful texture packs for 3 and New Vegas are there? The ones I've seen look good but (to me) they totally change the tone of the game.

enb stuff can make the game look pretty ok, but it's also a bit of a crapshoot too based on whatever your preference is. it still won't look 'good' 'cuz of animation stiffness and the general engine alongside enb wonkiness with lighting. i don't really know if there's an ENB that is just generally good overall for all settings 'cuz of how much the lighting situation changes- if there is i certainly haven't found one that really jives with me

one texture mod that wasn't in the OP (bein' honest here, i haven't read the thread!) that is great:
hi-res wasteland clothing
http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/54478/?

it's just a retexture of all the clothing in the game to have lots of nice detail and stuff- it looks good and isn't drastically tonebreaking or anything

then again i probably can't be trusted re: tonebreakingness 'cuz my game currently looks like this (or would if i remembered to save the damn ENB configuration ughhh)

Lol what mod are you using to turn the wasteland to snow?

man if those roaches weren't so covered in clothes i'd be freaking out real hard right now
I think they are cute. :3

Thing is, they are both way too overpowered. But the animations are fantastic. They can run very fast on their spindly legs.

I can't answer that. I have never played New Vegas and pretty much everything I know about modding I learned from that guide + Gopher's videos.
Oh, I didn't know! Hope you enjoy it so far.

Thanks anyway. :)

You could maybe add some of dragbody's Armor Overhaul mods for the bigger factions (NCR and Legion), the vanilla armor is really boring. And get the NMC or the Ojo Bueno texture pack.

Lol what mod are you using to turn the wasteland to snow?
I believe that is Nevada Skies

- Winter Edition with special climate conditions.

Farewell Fallout 3 it was nice knowing you while you were playable...

I have tried playing Fallout 3 on several ocassions and installs on my win7 machine now. Have tried disabling and enabling various mods and patches and it always ends in the game crashing for me. This latest excursion has wasted 8 hours of my life trying to get a good game out of it but to no avail, now it just crashes at certain places in the game.

Will I have better luck with New Vegas?

As long as you don't mess up your load orders it should play extremely fine once you installed NVSE, Stutter Remover, 4GB Fallout New Vegas and Yukichigai Unofficial Patch.

new vegas is generally easier to run for sure

also better game <3

13953000-1412604911.jpg

I should remember to always read the readme instead of rushing to click to install a mod and having something like this happen.

At least I got Weapons of Millenia finally working, I guess. :D

Whats the best companion overhaul mods for New Vegas gaf? I'm sick of my companions going on rampages before I can even see the first enemy. Even on passive.

what do you mean overhauls?

like ai stuff?

i generally just install the weaker boone mod linked above by luap and that's about it

since cass is my waifu and she's super underpowered and generally terrible i don't have too worry about them going on murderous rampages too much

i think there's one for ed-e too since ed-e tends to go psycho every now and then

Thats pretty much what I mean. Anything thay ether balances out the AI companions or weakens them.

well that's the only one i use, since i don't think any of the other companions are too overpowered

couldn't find the ed-e one i was looking for but generally enough i'd say second stongest would be veronica? and she's got a power fist so she's not one shotting people from a million kms away like boone

There is Cirosan's Classic Overhaul which does that.

Follower Tweaks – Overhauls the impact of companions. Followers now only do half-damage, but only take half-damage as well. The maximum number of followers you can have at once is now based on your Charisma, instead of always being two.

I believe there is also a perk that comes with the More Perks mod with the same effect but I'm not totally sure.

Also, if you want your companions to be really passive and not shoot anyone until they get shot or you start shooting you can download JIP Companions Command and Control.

So I decided to go all-in with the visual mods. I want to say that NMCs Texture Pack and Mojave Nights are amazing. I complained earlier that New Vegas was a bit ugly, and these two mods really help fix that. I haven't finished re-modding my game yet, but it is coming along very nicely. Already a huge improvement over my initial attempt.

The drama going on between New Vegas Redesigned 3 and Fallout Character Overhaul sucks. I blindly updated my mods after not playing NV for a couple months and didn't see that FCO took down the assets NVR3 needed because he's accusing the author of NVR3 of stealing his work. The NVR3 author, of course, denies it and says it's a misunderstanding. So now I've got giant red warning signs on random characters because of all the missing assets.

I still have no idea why the author of NVR3 decided to make his mod dependent on FCO to begin with.

I really wish I didn't delete the old versions after updating, because I had it working perfect before.

What really sucks is that I wanted to use FCO and NVR3 but FCO requires Old World Blues. :( So I can't use either of those mods.

it's something i guess

then buy it you silly

Nah. :P I don't even know if I like New Vegas yet! I've only played an hour.

I'm almost done setting up my mods. I'll post my new mod list when I'm finished, it's like twice as big this time lol.
Just know that there is a limit to how many mods you can run at once.
I know someone who had CTD all the time and later I found out that this person had 200 plugins checked. 😂

Ssg2H6t.jpg

Also, here's a screenshot of my Courier (Nima) and his goof troop. (Rusty the rude little teddy bear, Kate from Beyond Boulder Dome, Willow and Boone)

Already have CCO and it seems like my companions were stronger then ever.

Will give the other one a try

Yeah. Nevada Skies or urwlnv + NMC really make a hell of a difference

Not to mention gun and armor re-textures or FCO/NVR3

It can be a purrty game.

JIP's mod is pretty good, but it can't elimininate bugs like Ed-E attacking other people spontaneously or companions freaking out (standing up and down, pulling out and putting back their weapon) when in true passive mode when you or they get detected.

I hope I have the money for a new laptop soon, I really want to try out the larger textures of the NMC (and the Ojo Bueno) mod. Looks really pretty. :)

I finally got around installing Dynavision 3 by Gopher. Fixes the problem I had with my bad LOD.

I have to tweak it a little though, these are the default settings and they are a tiny bit too much. A bit overkill. :p

anyone doing .ini edits for NV?

what to do, what to avoid?

There are some basic INI tweaks in the New Vegas S.T.E.P. guide

All right, I'm up and running (again)!

This time I am heavily modded, but my oh my does it look so much better. I'm at work right now so I can't post my mod list, but I'll post it when I get home.

The only thing I'm slightly worried about is that I installed the large (2048 x 2048) version of NMCs Textures Pack, and I'm not sure if I should have done that. I have a GeForce GTX 760 with 2GB of VRAM so I thought I should be fine, but I'm gonna keep a close eye on my FPS because I hear the large version is extremely taxing.

Man, the author of NVR3 took down his mod for almost a week for what I thought would be to remove the FCO requirement, but nope. It's back up with a new version that still requires FCO. I just don't see the point in doing that.

I hate to complain about this stuff since modders do this all for free, but he really needs to remove the FCO requirement, even if it does take a lot of work.

It works with FCO 2.1.3. If you want, I could upload the version I have.

Also, the worst thing about animations in this game is that there's no separate animations for diagonal movement. And they can't be added due to limitations. Baffling that it took until Skyrim for Bethesda to implement fucking diagonal running animations into their piece of shit engine.

Another thing, does Tale of Two Wastelands run off of New Vegas as a base? Could I theoretically have Fallout 3 on my HDD and New Vegas on my SSD, and still play it?

Stopping by to say that I've really been enjoying my first New Vegas playthrough. I can't believe I'm already over 10 hours into the game! I feel like I just started. I'm currently in Nipton killing the Legion dudes. I do have a few questions:

1. Is is better to just use the various guns I pick up along the way, or should I specialize in one or two of my favorite guns?

2. Is it better to specialize in a few skills, or spread the points out a bit? I've been pumping most of my points into Guns, Stealth, Medicine, and Repair.

Mod-wise, I've only ran into three minor issues so far, which is pretty amazing considering the huge amount of mods I'm using. My biggest issue is with Nevada Skies — some of the weather effects (like the sandstorms) are a little too intense for me. I mean it looks cool for a bit, but then it just becomes a nuisance because I can't see anything, so I end up using the wait function to make it go away. But overall the mods have made this game amazing, and so much easier on the eyes. The coolest sight so far is Nipton at night. The Mojave Nights mod + HD textures makes the whole area really atmospheric with the flames lightning the town with a beautiful starry night above.

you should probably focus on one type of combat skill, be it guns, energy weapons, etc. they're all fairly balanced so just choose your favorite. if you find a really good weapon for something you're not skilled at you're not gonna be able to use it properly so you know

other than that you can spread out points pretty alright. i like roleplaying and dumping lots of points into a few things and see what i'm locked out of and how i can work around my character's weaknesses (magazines are pretty op) but that's up to you

Oh yes, I'm focusing on guns only. I sell all the energy and melee weapons I acquire. But gun-wise, I have like 9 different ones — revolvers, shotguns, assault rifles, pistols. Should I only keep the best ones and sell the others? Or is it good to have a lot of weapons?

I'd recommend limiting yourself too a select few. My character for example only has a chainsaw, Q-35 matter modulator and a Tri-beam Laser rifle since I have a high Energy and Melee weapons skill. Maybe try a Revolver, Shotgun and Rifle combo? Just a suggestion. ;)

Also, if it breaks the immersion for you like it does for me to carry a thousand different things with you through the desert, get the Mobile Truck Base (by tdx73). Helped me a lot when I needed to carry a lot of heavy weaponry to some of the harder missions before. Definitely recommend it for everyone who plays Hardcore mode or just for the immersion factor. :)

well you can specialize with a few perks but for the most part i just used whatever was strongest/most fun at the time

i usually carried a sniper rifle too cos those are pretty useful

Uhhh, Tau34RUS uploaded a new mod to the Nexus! The revolver that was used by Amanda in Alien: Isolation. As a huge Alien fan I really appreciate that. Bit overpowered though. Not for people who want to have lore-friendly stuff only in there game. Still, impressive work.

Very nice model, but Weapons of the New Millenia, Project Nevada and WMX already add shitloads of weapons lol. At 40 hours on my current playthrough, still haven't seen a lot of them.

Also, if anyone's using New Vegas Redesigned 3, I'd recommend disabling the Gomorrah Redesigned ESP, completely kills performance in the casinos for me. Makes them much more lively, but not worth halving the framerate IMO.

Yeah, I know. I use Millenia's pack, Project Nevada and the DLC Weapon Integration mod so I already have a huge arsenal to choose from. But from time to time I come across single weapons that look just good enough that I want to use them in my game. Like this gun here, for example. =)

was just watching some of the changes in new vegas redesigned 3, and dang that mod looks like it's gone a long way

The ranger combat outfits added by ADAM are goddamn amazing, which makes the lack of coat physics even more glaring. Really hate how coats just stick to your legs like they're glued there.

I realized that I never posted my updated mod list. Here it is:

You're a good friend. Really appreciate this.

Are there any guides you can recommend for things like merging/bash patching? I've tried modding Bethesda games quite a few times over the years, but it never works as it should. Probably some important steps im missing.

I am really sad that I can't install ADAM or FCO. They both require DLC. Oh well. I might buy the DLC during the Steam winter sale.

No problemo. I got pretty much all of those mods (and the instructions on how to install them) from the amazing S.T.E.P. guide:
Fear & Loathing in New Vegas
The author is still frequently updating the guide.

The guide also tells you how to make a bashed patch with Wrye Flash (this is assuming you use Mod Organizer though):
Creating a Bashed Patch
The Bashed Patch is almost as versatile for New Vegas as it is for Oblivion. This means that many more options exist to merge things to the Bashed Patch.

Run Wrye Flash NV through Mod Organizer. When started right click "Bashed Patch,0.esp" and select Rebuild Patch.
If there is a pop-up that saying certain mods will be disable because they are mergeable, click [Yes]. If not disregard.
In the Bashed Patch menu in the left pane make sure all these check boxes are ticked: Merge Patches, Import Actors, Import Actors: AIPackages, Import Actors: Death Items, Import Cells, Import Destructible, Import Factions, Import Graphics, Import Inventory, Import NPC Faces, Import Names, Import Scripts, Import Sounds, Import Stats, Import Weapon Modifications, Tweak Settings, Content Checker, FormID Lists, Leveled Lists, Race Records.
Now go through all the sections that are checked and make sure to tick every check box in the right pane that you see except for:
For Import Names leave Fallout.esm unticked.
For Tweak Settings tick Terminal Speed Adjustment and then right click and set to 'x 6'.
Click Build Patch and wait for it to finish. Wrye Flash should take care of everything from here and ask to activate itself if that is needed.
When done close Wrye Flash NV.
In the left pane of MO, go to the bottom of the mod list and right click->Create Mod on "Overwrite".
Type in <Profile Name> Bashed Patch and click [OK]. There is no specific place to put the new folder since it is only a plugin with some files that are irrelevant and BOSS/LOOT will sort it.
Once the folder is created, a new Bashed Patch can be generated again and again without having to transfer the Bashed Patch from the "Overwrite" folder repeatedly.
